Modeling Urban Growth And Land Use Change In Albuquerque Using Sleuth, Pankaj Bajracharya
Modeling Urban Growth And Land Use Change In Albuquerque Using Sleuth, Pankaj Bajracharya
Geography ETDs
This research examines the urban growth and land use pattern of Albuquerque in the next 20 years, for the year 2035, based on past urbanization and land use. Additionally, it compares possible urban growth and land use patterns for two scenarios i. Business as usual scenario, where urbanization pattern of Albuquerque is based on historic data without any explicit definition of areas specifically designated for development and ii. Expansion scenario, where three areas around Albuquerque specifically designated for development (Mesa del Sol, Volcano Mesa and Santolina) is explicitly defined in the model. The two scenarios are further examined based on …
The Scientific Conquest Of New Mexico: Local Legacies Of The Manhattan Project 1942-2015, Lucie Anne Genay
The Scientific Conquest Of New Mexico: Local Legacies Of The Manhattan Project 1942-2015, Lucie Anne Genay
American Studies ETDs
In the initial scoping phase of this research project, the main question I used for guidance was "to what extent and how did the Manhattan Project impact New Mexico and New Mexicans?" My first objective was to assess the magnitude of the state's transformation before addressing the other questions that soon ensued from this original reflection. A brief historical review of the state's transformation will introduce these questions, and comparing pre-World War II and post-Cold War New Mexico will justify the term "revolutionized" I used above. This dissertation retraces the story of this scientific colonization from the point of view …

From Parks To Partnerships: National Heritage Areas And The Path To Collaborative Participation In The National Park Service's First 100 Years, Alan W. Barton
Natural Resources Journal
National parks have been characterized as a democratic institution, a window on natural and cultural history open to all. Over its first century, however, the National Park Service’s (NPS) approach to participatory democracy has evolved. In its early years, NPS professionals applied their expertise to make decisions about park policy, administration and management with little input from the public aside from the interests of businesses that operated within the parks. Public participation in the parks was limited to using the facilities that the NPS provided for public enjoyment. Beginning in the 1930s, the NPS expanded public participation by adding management …

The Right To Work In Argentina : Job Policy And Economic Rights In A Worker Cooperative, Patricia Kent
Latin American Studies ETDs
This thesis provides an exploration of an empresa recuperada por sus trabajadores (worker recovered enterprise, ERT) case study in Argentina in an effort to understand their impact to employment retention during economic crisis. Part of the larger social upheaval resulting from failed economic liberalization during the 1990s, ERTs attempt to implement an alternative economic development strategy through self-management of previously private enterprises. This thesis explores one ERT located in Florencio Varela, Argentina, in an effort to understand the impact the ERTs have in local communities in terms of employment retention and social capital production. Lastly, the analysis examines the role …

On Local Fracking Bans: Policy And Preemption In New Mexico, Alex Ritchie
On Local Fracking Bans: Policy And Preemption In New Mexico, Alex Ritchie
Natural Resources Journal
In the midst of the hydraulic fracturing revolution, elected officials in Mora County, New Mexico recently banned all oil and gas production within the county. But the officials went even further, stripping corporations of constitutional rights and declaring the constitutions of the United States and the state of New Mexico illegal if interpreted as inconsistent with the ordinance. Why would a small rural county like Mora with no oil and gas operations to speak of adopt such an extreme ordinance? This article applies economics, political choice, and localism theories to argue that Mora County’s decision may be at least partly …

Resource Center for Raza Planning (RCRP)
Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation collaborated with the University of New Mexico, Resource Center for RAZA Planning (RCRP), and the School of Architecture and Planning. The County owns and manages several open space properties in and around Tijeras Canyon. In previous history, the County has acquired land in a reactionary way to protect natural resources or preserve recreational areas. They have also worked with UNM and other entities to purchase properties for co-management, like the UNM golf course. The County is interested in being more proactive and create a true link from the City of Albuquerque to the East Mountains …

Organic Is More Of An American Term--We Are Traditional Farmers': Discourses Of Place-Based Organic Farming, Community, Heritage, And Sustainability, Jeffrey Hoffmann
Communication ETDs
The following study looks at how traditional, organic, cooperative farmers who are starting a new farming cooperative in the Albuquerque South Valley in New Mexico communicate about their farming as a set of (sustainable) cultural practices. The study draws on environmental communication theories, the theory of the Coordinated Management of Meaning, and Actor Network Theory to construct a communication-based framework through which to view farmers stories about sustainability and visions for the future of their farming cooperative. This framework is productive, showing how some Nuevo Mexicano farmers (and others) orient toward farming, sustenance, and human-nature relationships through community, family, heritage, …

An Interprofessional Community Engaged Educational Curriculum For Health Professions Students, Cynthia Arndell, Leeanna Vargas, Loren Sapphire Kelly, Betsy Vanleit, Jacqueline Garcia, Christine Cwik
InterProfessional Education Research and Scholarship
Population health management requires cross-sectoral collaboration within and outside of health sciences professions to effectively address our current societal health priorities and inequities. Exposing health professions students to a competency-based framework that focuses on community engagement early in their educational training lays the foundation for building the necessary partnerships with communities to promote health. Aligned with our institutions mission, the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center's Interprofessional Education (IPE) Team is designing a required interprofessional community engaged curriculum for all nursing, medicine, pharmacy, physician assistant, and occupational and physical therapy students to be implemented in Fall of 2015.'

Local Food And Power Dynamics In Southeast Grand Rapids, Michigan, Christina Mello
Local Food And Power Dynamics In Southeast Grand Rapids, Michigan, Christina Mello
Anthropology ETDs
Various types of food security' projects essentially deliver little in the way of real opportunities for local food security among Southeast residents in Grand Rapids, MI. Nonetheless, developers justifying their gentrifying efforts are increasingly funded through large grants and public dollars by actually purporting themselves to seek solutions to reducing food insecurity in these Southeast neighborhoods. 'Community,' 'local,' 'sustainability,' and 'social justice' are common terms marketed as values to promote urban redevelopment, food security initiatives, and to sell local food. Food growers and activists challenge how these terms are defined and used for profiteering. Thus, there are competing value systems …

Alternative Income Generating Opportunities: A Case Study In Mezquital, Mexico, Kristen Mattila
Latin American Studies ETDs
This thesis is an in-depth exploration of the situation of women in the border town of Mezquital, Mexico. The local experiences of women in Mezquital are situated within the larger theoretical debates of economic policy in Latin America, gender, labor and development. The theoretical analysis sets the stage to facilitate a process aimed at assisting the local women of Mezquital in creating alternative income generating opportunities to meet their specific economic needs and to highlight their talents. A participatory research process was implemented that incorporated the underlying assumptions of the gender and development paradigm. This case study is a snapshot …
Let The Beauty We Love Be What We Do: A Case Study In Communication-Centered Leadership, Jo Carter
Let The Beauty We Love Be What We Do: A Case Study In Communication-Centered Leadership, Jo Carter
Communication ETDs
While leadership research is widespread, much of it represents leadership psychology assumptions that leaders are singular individuals, different from the body that they are leading. This dissertation provides a close reading of a different approach to leadership, one arising from the cultural community around the Diana's Grove retreat center. This philosophy holds cultural norms of the Cornerstones of Community (choice, thinking well of the group, thinking well of one's self, stewardship of self, and sacred wound) as overt rules that are the foundation of sustainable community interactions. It discusses how service to the idea of community is the primary motivating …

The Discourse And Practice Of Native American Cuisine: Native American Chefs And Native American Cooks In Contemporary Southwest Kitchens, Lois Ellen Frank
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation analyzes the emergent Native American cuisine of the American Southwest. It consists of an ethnography of both Native American cooks, who are largely self-taught and practice in noncommercial settings, as well as Native American chefs, some self taught and some professionally trained and working in commercial settings. The ethnographic work includes both extensive and intensive field interviews with chefs and cooks, and close attention to their work in home and professional kitchens. Particular attention is paid to histories of food knowledge, as well as to food preparation concepts, techniques, performance, and aesthetics. The foods employed by these cooks …

Addressing Renewable Energy Development At The Local Level By Learning How To Plan Through Green Building: An Example Of Community-Based Planning On The Navajo Reservation, Gepetta S. Billie
Architecture and Planning ETDs
This thesis considers energy development, specifically how the Navajo Nation can address renewable energy development at the local chapter level by incorporating green building strategies into housing planning and development. The objective is to make sense of how individual Navajo chapters, like Tsé Łichii, can learn to plan and build better housing through green building techniques with the ultimate goal of addressing energy on the Navajo reservation. Through planning theory and ideas for how to apply these concepts to individual chapter needs, this thesis will explain how the Navajo Nation as a whole can plan for sustainable renewable energy development …

Home/Land: Kiowa, New Mexico- A Grassland's Story, Heather R. Yaryan
Architecture and Planning ETDs
The purpose of this thesis was to illustrate how cultural and natural histories inform place-based community planning. Utilizing both cultural and natural histories, the planner may begin to see patterns of habitancy as they correlate to ecological fluctuations. I focused my research on Kiowa, New Mexico the community my family homesteaded in the grasslands of Northeastern New Mexico and took an auto-ethnographic approach to conducting my research. The story of Kiowa is both unique and universal. The intricacies of the land and people are, indeed, woven into a specific place and times. It is the intersection of Place and of …

Assessment And Preliminary Design Of A Water Supply Project For The Village Of Altos De La Paz, Honduras, Stephen M. Kolk
Assessment And Preliminary Design Of A Water Supply Project For The Village Of Altos De La Paz, Honduras, Stephen M. Kolk
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
A lack of access to clean, potable water is one of the greatest health threats encountered in third world countries, especially among rural populations. Annually, a staggering number of deaths, many of them children, are attributed to waterborne diseases. The Honduran village of Altos de la Paz is typical in its susceptibility to disease due to a lack of clean water. One way of solving this problem is to access the river used as the primary drinking source higher up in the watershed, upstream of any anthropogenic influences, and pipe it to each house in the village. The first step …
