Persistence Of A Culture's Patterns In Prisons Of War, Anne Hoffman Senter Sep 1948

Persistence Of A Culture's Patterns In Prisons Of War, Anne Hoffman Senter

Sociology ETDs

This study is an investigation of prisoner of war sociology, specifically that of Japanese-controlled prison camps in which American soldiers captured in the Philippine Islands in the spring of 1942 were confined for almost three and one-half years. It is an attempt to discover the informal social social structure obtaining in these camps and helps answer answer the question of what happened when the existing social structure of the army was torn down and the men were thrown into a life requiring a rebuilding and realignment of social relationships and values.

The Use Of The Personal Interview To Study The Subjective Impact Of Culture Contacts, Aristides B. Chavez Aug 1948

The Use Of The Personal Interview To Study The Subjective Impact Of Culture Contacts, Aristides B. Chavez

Sociology ETDs

The general interest in this problem arose from observation of the behavior and attitude of the Spanish speaking people towards problems affecting them in the urban setting where the cultural tempo is set by a differing value and attitude system from their own. The behavior and attitude precipitants have been incidents involving attempts at testing race and culture attitudes, land legislation, question of church and state in the field of education, membership policy in unions, employment, administration of justice. business techniques, rural medicine, and health problems, etc.
