The Impact Of Indian Gaming On Educational Attainment, Poverty Among Native American Tribes, Aaron Diaz
The Impact Of Indian Gaming On Educational Attainment, Poverty Among Native American Tribes, Aaron Diaz
Sociology ETDs
What is the impact of Indian gaming on educational attainment among Native American tribes? Is there a correlation between Indian gaming and poverty rates? Utilizing a combination of cross-sectional analysis and longitudinal case studies, I examine whether Indian gaming has an impact on educational attainment. I also explore the economic mechanism of how this effect occurs. I analyze the 1990 and 2000 census data in addition to raw data collected from the National Indian Gaming Commission website, which provided the year selected Native American tribes were approved to pursue the establishment of gaming on their reservations. No significance was recorded …
Comparing The Effectiveness Of Hantavirus Outreach In Northwestern New Mexico, Panama, And Chile, Marjorie Mcconnell
Comparing The Effectiveness Of Hantavirus Outreach In Northwestern New Mexico, Panama, And Chile, Marjorie Mcconnell
Sociology ETDs
This research compared the effectiveness of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome prevention outreach in northwestern New Mexico, the Los Santos region of Panama, and Region Araucania IX in Chile. Outreach effectiveness for hantavirus is not well understood, even though outreach in Chile appears to be more extensive than in northwestern New Mexico and Panama. Understanding the role of human demographics, disease ecology, and subsequent human behavior in the disease process is critical to the examination of community responses in terms of behavior changes. Through the implementation of a self administered 28 question survey instrument (n=601), I measured attitudes towards, and across public …
Beloved Savages And Other Outsiders: Genre And Gender Transgressions In The Travel Writings Of Herman Melville, Bayard Taylor, And Charles Warren Stoddard, Kelvin Ray Beliele
Beloved Savages And Other Outsiders: Genre And Gender Transgressions In The Travel Writings Of Herman Melville, Bayard Taylor, And Charles Warren Stoddard, Kelvin Ray Beliele
English Language and Literature ETDs
"'My dissertation is a study of the travel writings of three nineteenth-century American authors, Herman Melville, Bayard Taylor, and Charles Warren Stoddard. I argue that these writers evinced a rebellion encompassing literary as well as political and social subversion. In order to succeed in their rebellion, they relied upon genre transgression, the violation of the traditions and conventions of a particular genre, to convey defiant social opinions. They were demonstrative in voicing their critiques of American sexual, religious, and racial dogmas in their travel fiction and poetry. These three authors violated genre boundaries in most of their works, but especially …

Criminal Law As A Constitutive Strategy: The Colombian Case, Farid Samir Benavides Vanegas
Criminal Law As A Constitutive Strategy: The Colombian Case, Farid Samir Benavides Vanegas
Research Papers
In this text I analyze the role criminal law has played in the production of subaltern subjectivities in Colombia. Criminal law and criminological discourse have been important to control subaltern groups and to constitute their identities. Colombian elites have appealed to criminal law to solve their social problems, in a strategy that has been labeled as laws symbolic efficiency or as 'penal efficienticism'.'

Chimeras And Jagunços: Positivist Discourse In Euclides Da Cunha's Os Sertões, Justin Barber
Chimeras And Jagunços: Positivist Discourse In Euclides Da Cunha's Os Sertões, Justin Barber
History ETDs
The present study elucidates the discursive practice of positivism, as particularly manifested in late nineteenth-century Brazil. Founded in 1889, the Republic of the United States of Brazil was constructed as a positivist state by republican idealists and pragmatic oligarchs; the political embodiment of ordem e progresso (order and progress). It was a form of government meant to overcome Brazils imagined and concrete backwardness by strictly adhering to the Natural Laws identified by Auguste Comte, Charles Darwin, and, in particular, Herbert Spencer. Positivist progress was, however, contingent upon the elimination of the pathological, amorphous 'savage lower races. Non-white degeneration in Brazil, …

Negotiating Power, Identity And Mutuality: Graduate Students In Relation With Faculty, Administrators And Each Other, Donald Halquist
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
While the collaborative practices of classroom teachers, teacher educators and preservice teachers have been well documented, less is known about the collaborative experiences of graduate students. The purpose of this qualitative study was to (a) describe and systematically analyze the collaborative and shared experiences of four graduate students who worked together for two and one-half years as part of a technology professional development project, (b) describe, through the voice of the graduate students, learning experiences that ran parallel to their formal doctoral education, and (c) demonstrate ways to link practitioner research and critical incidents. Through the study, I explored aspects …
Automating The Moderation Process In Geo Using Trust Metrics, Harihar Shankar
Automating The Moderation Process In Geo Using Trust Metrics, Harihar Shankar
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Distributed knowledge bases offer novel and fascinating ways to build, integrate and process knowledge. In these distributed knowledge bases, many users collaborate and contribute content. Verification and validation of the user's contributions become imperative for the success of these knowledge bases, especially if it is a scientific knowledge base. However, manually verifying and moderating the contributions become a bottleneck for an up-to-date system. In this thesis, we propose an algorithm to automate the moderation process and we implement the algorithm in an open scientific knowledge base application called Global Energy Observatory (GEO). Using Trust Metrics, user's contributions can be automatically …
Participatory Development And Its Emergence In The Fields Of Community And International Development, Yossef Ben-Meir
Participatory Development And Its Emergence In The Fields Of Community And International Development, Yossef Ben-Meir
Sociology ETDs
Since World War II, participatory development (PD), part of the alternative development movement, has evolved from a fringe approach to meeting basic human needs, to a globally recognized paradigm that is informing the strategic decisions regarding community and international development by governments and multi-lateral and indigenous NGOs, as well as management practices in the private sector. This is a study of 1) the evolution of this phenomenon since the 1940s in the context of historical events and dominant theories that inform most development (modernization-globalization and dependency-world-system), and 2) PD itself, including its basic features, methods, case examples, and roots in …

"Aquí No Pasó Nada": Terror, Remembrance And Healing In A Guatemalan "Green Zone", William G. Wagner
Anthropology ETDs
This research focuses on the experiences of survivors of political violence and their healers in Momostenango, Totonicapán. The majority population of Momostenango is Kiche' Maya. During Guatemala's civil war (1960-1996), the state used terror to silence popular resistance and to neutralize the threat of insurgent guerilla forces that drew wide support from Maya communities. From 1981 to 1983 state army and paramilitary forces resorted to scorched earth tactics that two different truth commissions subsequently characterized as genocidal. During the war, the military designated the town as a 'green zone' (a region sympathetic to and supportive of the military's counterinsurgency project). …

The Women Potters Of Mata Ortiz: Growing Empowerment Through Artistic Work, Kiara Maureen Hughes
Anthropology ETDs
The contemporary production of pottery for global ethnic art markets set in motion a series of economic and social transformations that completely changed the Chihuahuan community of Mata Ortíz. This dynamic art form has included women and men since its initial stages over thirty-five years ago. Today, there are women of talent and expertise represented at every level of pottery execution and quality along the market continuum. Individual creativity and market recognition work together to create a context in which both men and women are able to capacitate themselves by acquiring the skills and competence needed to gain control over …
Choice Ideology And The Parameters Of Its Practice: Alternative Abortion Narratives In New Mexico, Abigail Rae Adams
Choice Ideology And The Parameters Of Its Practice: Alternative Abortion Narratives In New Mexico, Abigail Rae Adams
Anthropology ETDs
The ideology of choice, embedded in the pro-choice, anti-abortion debate in the United States, is founded on Enlightenment notions that take the autonomous individual with perfect knowledge and rationality as the unit of analysis. The basic premise is that each woman 'chooses' from a variety of equally accessible options. Hidden in the political language of choice are the constraints all women face as they attempt to negotiate reproduction, especially if they wish to end a pregnancy. 'Choice' does not exist as an abstract freedom, but is situated within the realities of power and agency. This paper examines the ability of …

Neoliberalism And The Indian Vernacular Press: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Neoliberal Discourses Among Kannada Journalists, Santhosh Chandrashekar
Neoliberalism And The Indian Vernacular Press: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Neoliberal Discourses Among Kannada Journalists, Santhosh Chandrashekar
Communication ETDs
The discourses of neoliberalism among journalists working for two Kannada newspapers were examined using critical discourse analysis. Seventeen journalists were interviewed with regard to their experiences pertaining to the changing role of Kannada newspapers, news values, and working conditions of journalists after 1991 when India liberalized its economy. The journalists responses were analyzed for themes to illuminate their understandings of the impact of economic liberalization on Kannada newspapers. The analysis of the responses demonstrated that while journalists from both the newspapers were acutely aware of the changes caused by neoliberal economic restructuring, they normalized such changes. Very rarely did they …

Campesino Participation In Rural Paraguay: Practical And Theoretical Challenges, Joseph J. Garcia
Campesino Participation In Rural Paraguay: Practical And Theoretical Challenges, Joseph J. Garcia
Latin American Studies ETDs
In 1997, the community of Guayaki-Cua, Paraguay underwent a dramatic political and social transformation allowing campesinos to take a more active role in decisionmaking processes. This change established safety and security for local residents, and brought about the involvement of the Paraguayan government, nongovernmental organizations and residents to begin development work in the form of infrastructure projects. The end of the Stroessner dictatorship in 1989 signaled the end of autocratic rule and ushered in the neoliberal perspective advocating private property, free trade, and other measures to bring about the democratization of Latin America economies to foster growth and participation. In …

The Evolving Architecture Of North American Integration, Laura Spitz
The Evolving Architecture Of North American Integration, Laura Spitz
Faculty Scholarship
Given its potential significance for democracy, sovereignty, government, governance, and justice in each of Canada, the United States, and Mexico, North American integration qua integration has thus far received surprisingly little attention from legal scholars and social scientists. While an expanding body of research explores the dynamics of continental integration in other contexts (especially Europe) and/or examines the meaning of globalization, regionalism, and multilateral internationalism in a general sense, the specific constitution of an integrated North American space remains largely undertheorized. This Article aims to advance the literature in this area by examining legal discourse as an example of the …
