Despedidas Con Mariachis: Examining Covid-19'S Impact On Mexican Americans In Southern California, Jessie M. Vallejo, Latin American And Iberian Institute
LAII Events
Although the trope of silenced mariachis was common in early COVID-19 news stories about Los Angeles County, many mariachis were actively performing and supporting community wellbeing between 2020 and 2022. This talk discusses pre-existing sociopolitical challenges and reflects on the pandemic's traumatic impact on Mexican Americans in the region.
Dr. Vallejo's research areas focus on mariachi, music education, and Indigenous cultural-linguistic revitalization. She co-produced Smithsonian Folkways’ 2013 release ¡Así Kotama!: The Flutes of Otavalo, Ecuador. She has also published in Smithsonian Folklife Magazine, Ethnomusicology Forum, Sonocordia, and The Ethnomusicologists' Cookbook vol.2. Jessie is a founding member of ICTM's …

We investigated whether and how infection prevention programs monitor for health disparities as part of healthcare-associated infection (HAI) surveillance through a survey of healthcare epidemiology leaders. Most facilities are not assessing for disparities in HAI rates. Professional society and national guidance should focus on addressing this gap.

Assessment Of Forest Stand Characteristics And Environmental Conditions On Soil Burn Severity And Post-Wildfire Flooding In The Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire, Raquel L. Valdez
Assessment Of Forest Stand Characteristics And Environmental Conditions On Soil Burn Severity And Post-Wildfire Flooding In The Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire, Raquel L. Valdez
Civil Engineering ETDs
Wildfire is a natural disturbance in forest ecosystems but has the potential to drastically change watershed conditions, leaving them highly vulnerable to post-wildfire hazards. High severity fires can significantly affect soil and landscape interactions, resulting in decreased evaporation and infiltration and increased runoff in the newly exposed soil surfaces. Most post-wildfire research focuses on reactive solutions. However, the time between wildfires and post-wildfire hazards is growing closer in margin. Therefore, assessing post-wildfire risks, pre-fire is helpful when assessing fire severity and is valuable to resource managers for pre-wildfire management, planning, and mitigation. This research is in the Upper Gallinas Watershed …

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) impacts the neurodevelopment of the fetus, including the infant's ability to self-regulate. Heart rate variability (HRV), that is, the beat-to-beat variability in heart rate, is a non-invasive measurement that can indicate autonomic nervous system (ANS) function/dysfunction.
METHODS: The study consisted of a subset of our ENRICH-2 cohort: 80 participants (32 PAE and 48 Controls) who had completed three visits during pregnancy. The participants completed a comprehensive assessment of PAE and other substances throughout pregnancy and assessments for stress, anxiety, and depression in the third trimester. At 24 h of age, infant HRV was assessed in …

Pathology Research and Scholarship
Artificial intelligence (AI) presents an opportunity in anatomic pathology to provide quantitative objective support to a traditionally subjective discipline, thereby enhancing clinical workflows and enriching diagnostic capabilities. AI requires access to digitized pathology materials, which, at present, are most commonly generated from the glass slide using whole-slide imaging. Models are developed collaboratively or sourced externally, and best practices suggest validation with internal datasets most closely resembling the data expected in practice. Although an array of AI models that provide operational support for pathology practices or improve diagnostic quality and capabilities has been described, most of them can be categorized into …

The Town That Built Its Own River: La Plaza Del Cerro At Taos County New Mexico, José A. Rivera Ph.D
Faculty Publications
Cerro is an unincorporated community in Taos County, New Mexico, and is situated near New Mexico State Highway 522 heading north to the Colorado border. Nearby is Cerro de Guadalupe, a peak that has an elevation of 8,796 feet and Cerro at 7,490 feet. The connection to Guadalupe Mountain gave the town its original name as “La Plaza del Cerro de Guadalupe.” Cerro was established in the early 1850s by settlers who arrived from nearby Questa and Taos. By itself, Guadalupe Mountain did not provide sufficient water to sustain an agrarian economy based on farming and livestock ranching as was …

Syntheses And Characterization Of Photoactive Ruthenium And Iron Polypyridyl Complexes, Rajani Thapa Magar
Syntheses And Characterization Of Photoactive Ruthenium And Iron Polypyridyl Complexes, Rajani Thapa Magar
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Within this dissertation, two distinct classes of metal complexes have been discussed that bear significance in the field of solar energy conversion, photo redox catalysis and memory devices. The first class of the metal complexes is a series of photochromic Ruthenium polypyridyl N-heterocyclic carbene tethered sulfoxide complexes that are reported to undergo unusually slow isomerization from S-bonded to O-bonded and unusually fast thermal reversion from O-bonded to S-bonded configuration. The role of NHC in the excited state dynamics of these complexes have been discussed in detail in Chapter 3.
For the first time in two decades, structural information of the …

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) is an important therapeutic option for outpatients at high risk of hospitalization from SARS-CoV-2 infection. We assessed the safety of outpatient CCP transfusions administered during clinical trials.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We analyzed data pertaining to transfusion-related reactions from two randomized controlled trials in the U.S. that evaluated the efficacy of CCP versus control plasma in various ambulatory settings. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess whether CCP was associated with transfusion reactions, after adjusting for potential confounders.
RESULTS: The combined study reported 79/1351 (5.9%) adverse events during the transfusion visit, with the majority 62/1351 …

Atypical Squamous Verrucous Lesions Of The Oral Cavity: Challenges In Interpretation Of Small Incisional Biopsies, Ryland Richards, Shweta Agarwal
Pathology Research and Scholarship
BACKGROUND: Squamous verrucous proliferative lesions of oral cavity can pose a diagnostic challenge for the general pathologist, especially on small biopsies. The superficial nature of incisional biopsies and inconsistent histologic terminologies used for these lesions contribute to often-discrepant clinical diagnosis, resulting in delayed treatment. This study aims to explore the proliferative squamous lesions of oral cavity, correlate biopsy & resection diagnoses, and evaluate possible reasons for discrepant diagnosis (if any).
DESIGN: A retrospective review of oral verrucous squamous lesions was undertaken. Pathology database was searched for oral cavity biopsies from January2018 through August2022 with the keywords: atypical, verrucous, squamous, and …

The Impact Of Postresettlement Stressors And Access To Health Care On Health Outcomes In Recently Resettled Refugees In The United States, David T. Lardier, Julia Hess, Lucas Winter, Jessica R. Goodkind
Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
This mixed-methods study examines mechanisms connecting the deployment of economic, social, and health care resources to emotional distress and physical health outcomes. Examining such mechanisms is critical for informing strategies, policies, and other interventions for reducing health disparities and improving refugee health in the United States and other resettlement contexts. Data for this study were collected as part of a randomized control trial in a mid-sized city in the Southwestern United States. Two-hundred ninety recently resettled (< 3 years) refugee adults from 143 households were enrolled in the study (36.2% Afghan, 32.8% Iraqi/Syrian, and 31.0% Great Lakes African; 52% women). Qualitative interview data were collected via semistructured interviews. A longitudinal structural equation path model of quantitative data from three time points over 12 months tested hypotheses that emerged from qualitative findings. In semistructured interviews, refugees in the United States (a) attributed the development of worse or new physical health problems to postresettlement stressors related to financial instability and limited social support that contributed to their emotional distress and (b) reported several barriers to accessing health care in the United States, including insufficient knowledge of health care resources, inadequate patient-provider communication, and navigating complex American health insurance systems, all of which exacerbated their physical health problems. Guided by these qualitative findings, longitudinal quantitative data revealed that: (a) postmigration stressors were associated with emotional distress and poor self-reported physical health, (b) emotional distress mediated the association between postmigration stressors and global health satisfaction, and (c) emotional distress was negatively associated with global health satisfaction. Findings document stressors refugees experience in the context of the unique environment created by the American health care system and how these stressors contribute to poor physical health through increased emotional distress. Creative practitioners spend much of their time outside of libraries, working in studios, labs, galleries, and other spaces. For this chapter, we declare that anyone can be a creative practitioner and that inspiration can come from new ways of experiencing the world. However, developing spaces to nurture creativity can be challenging within traditional academic library spaces. For example, if creativity is nurtured through experiential and embodied learning, how do we craft spaces within our libraries to inspire new modes of seeing, being, and knowing in the world? While librarians have long studied the information needs of artists, designers, and architects, …
