The Pipeline Industry Meets Grief Unimaginable: Congress Reacts With The Pipeline Safety Improvement Act Of 2002, Carol M. Parker
Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)
Combined, all pipeline incidents in 2000 caused a record setting $197 million in property damage. The number of fatalities for the year (16) was the highest in 25 years. The above accidents illustrate the two sides of the pipeline safety coin. On the one hand, pipelines are an efficient and safe way to transport energy. On the other hand, because they transport so much material so efficiently, a single accident has the potential to be vastly more catastrophic than a tanker truck spill. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, a single pipeline accident, "...can injure hundreds of persons, affect …

A Different Face Of Faith-Based Politics: Social Capital And Community Organizing In The Public Arena, Richard L. Wood, Mark R. Warren
Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications
The role of religion in American politics and civil society has drawn significant scholarly focus, but most of the recent attention has fallen on the religious rights political influence and, more recently, on new initiatives to broaden the channeling of social service funding through faith- based organizations. These are important issues, but they exclude another historically important face of religiously-grounded public engagement: religious pressure for deeper political and economic democracy. We examine a widespread contemporary aspect of such engagement, faith-based community organizing (FBCO), through which poor and middle-income religious congregations advance the interests of their members. We analyze data from …

Flying And Fighting Confederate Flags, Kari Ward Karr
Flying And Fighting Confederate Flags, Kari Ward Karr
Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)
Until recently, South Carolina has flown the Confederate battle flag over the statehouse, now flown over a confederate monument a few yards away as a result of legislative compromise. In response to South Carolina\'s conduct, the NAACP has greeted visitors to South Carolina at interstate roadside information centers by peacefully picketing, leafleting, and informing them about the economic boycott of South Carolina. They have informed these traveling citizens of the interesting phenomenon of continued state flying of a symbol routinely exploited associated with racist messages by the Ku Klux Klan and European-American Unity and Rights Organization (EURO, led by David …
