The Role Of Stimulus Similarity In In [Sic] Children's Preferences For Novelty, Larry Fenson Sep 1965

The Role Of Stimulus Similarity In In [Sic] Children's Preferences For Novelty, Larry Fenson

Psychology ETDs

Berlyne (1960) has recently suggested that the degree of “novelty” possessed by a given stimulus is inversely related to three factors: (a) how often patterns that are similar enough to be relevant have been experienced before; (b) how similar they have been; and (c) how recently they have been experienced. Stated more simply, Berlyne is referring to the frequency, similarity, and recency of any stimulus.

A Comparison Of Blind And Seeing Children's Verbal Concepts Of The Primary, Secondary And Tertiary Colors: Emotional, Psychological And Physical Descriptive, Norma Gulley

Special Education ETDs

It was the purpose of this study to compare verbal concepts of color of both seeing and blind children. This comparison was undertaken to see if the blind child has both emotional-psychological and physical-descriptive concepts of color which are similar to those of seeing children when expressed verbally. This was done by interviewing a group of blind children and a group of seeing children and asking them what they thought and felt concerning color. This study was concerned with primary, secondary and tertiary colors. These colors were chosen since from them all other colors can be mixed in their truest …

The Process Of Professionalization: A Comparative Analysis Of Clinical Psychology And Psychiatry, William E. Arens Jun 1965

The Process Of Professionalization: A Comparative Analysis Of Clinical Psychology And Psychiatry, William E. Arens

Sociology ETDs

As a number of observers concerned with the sociology of work have pointed out, there has been a general tendency among occupational groups to strive for professional status. Historically this social phenomenon can be traced to medieval Western Europe with the rise of church sponsored universities providing training primarily in theology, but also focusing on the study of medicine and law. So long as the church maintained its predominance, the various fields for which the universities trained did not become clearly distinct. However, with the decline of the church's power in the 16th century, and as the culture of that …

The Effect Of Preliminary Training In Phoneme Discrimination On The Articulation Of An Unfamiliar Speech Sound., Dolores Smith Butt May 1965

The Effect Of Preliminary Training In Phoneme Discrimination On The Articulation Of An Unfamiliar Speech Sound., Dolores Smith Butt

Psychology ETDs

The usual procedure followed by speech therapists in correcting defective articulation is to begin with a period of auditory training before giving direct practice in articulation. Presumably, this auditory training will later transfer to articulation le~rnin5. Defective articulation is the most frequent type of speech problem which a speech therapist must treat. In these cases, a student may omit, distort, or substitute error sounds for the correct articulation of a speech sound, or phoneme. The ti1erapist attempts to teach the child. correct articulation, out in many cases the child cannot produce the phoneme correctly and direct practice is difficult. Therefore, …

An Experimental Investigation Of Relative Effectiveness Among Three Different Arithmetic Teaching Methods., Jimmie Joe Greathouse Apr 1965

An Experimental Investigation Of Relative Effectiveness Among Three Different Arithmetic Teaching Methods., Jimmie Joe Greathouse

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

A substantial body of literature and theory trends during the past decade was aimed at upgrading elementary arithmetic programs. Generally, it advocated that educational improvement could be much greater in the future than it had been in the past if newer instructional processes and newer instructional materials were implemented in elementary school arithmetic programs. The impetus created by this literature is continuing at the present time. Currently, research and pilot projects in elementary school arithmetic instruction, experimental arithmetic curricula, commercial arithmetic textbooks, and university elementary teacher-education programs are cooperatively promoting widespread implementation of meaningful arithmetic teaching approaches and materials.
