Annual Report Of The University, 1966-1967, University Of New Mexico

UNM Annual Reports

Among the most meaningful changes have been those occasioned by the student body. Foremost among influences upon the University has been the continuing rapid growth of the student population. In September, 1947, there were 4,495 students enrolled. That represented a gain approximately threefold over the last truly prewar academic year, 1940-41. But the 1947 enrollment was, in the thinking of the time, a rather artificial figure, for a large number of our students in that year were World War II veterans, going to college under provisions of the so-called GI Bill of Rights. Nevertheless, we were embarking on a period …

Venus Looking Glas: A Study Of Books Iii And Iv Of The Faerie Queene., Enid Howarth Jun 1967

Venus Looking Glas: A Study Of Books Iii And Iv Of The Faerie Queene., Enid Howarth

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation relies heavily upon two assumptions: first, that the allegorical habit of mind pervaded the Renaissance in England (as well, of course, as in Italy) as a viable and unquestioned inheritance of the Middle Ages; second, that a close reading of the text of a Renaissance writer (in this case, the two central books of Spenser’s The Faerie Queene) can illuminate various facets of this habit of mind and shed light on some of the intellectually accepted modes of thought which pervade the whole work as well as other works from the same period. The method is more that …

A Test Of Acquired Distinctiveness And Equivalence Of Cues, Thomas E. Malloy Jun 1967

A Test Of Acquired Distinctiveness And Equivalence Of Cues, Thomas E. Malloy

Psychology ETDs

The experiment tested the acquired distinctiveness of cues (ADC) and acquired equivalence of cues (AEC) hypotheses. The ADC hypothesis predicts that learning distinctive responses to similar stimuli will decrease the amount of stimulus generalization (SG) between the stimuli. The AEC hypothesis predicts that learning the same response to two stimuli will increase the amount SG between the stimuli. The design used to test these hypotheses was a mixed list design; thus fifty Ss were run in a single group to which all the experimental conditions were administered. The experiment was conducted in h=three stages. In the first stage (pretraining) eight …

The Interaction Of External And Mediating Cues As A Function Of Type Of Stimulus Pretraining And Intralist Stimulus Similarity, David M. Del Castillo Jun 1967

The Interaction Of External And Mediating Cues As A Function Of Type Of Stimulus Pretraining And Intralist Stimulus Similarity, David M. Del Castillo

Psychology ETDs

This experiment was design0d to test two implications derived from the hypotheses of acquired distinctiveness and equivalence of cues, and to determine the way in which similarity among external stimuli and distinctive vs. common mediating cues, interact to affect the learned distinctiveness or equivalence of cues. It was predicted from the acquired distinctiveness hypotheses that relative]y greater positive transfer would result when distinctive mediating responses were attached to highly similar stimuli than when these same responses were attached to stimuli that were initially low in similarity. A parallel prediction, derived from the acquired equivalence hypothesis, was that negative transfer would …

Socialist Realism And The Spanish American Novel., Ralph Kite Jun 1967

Socialist Realism And The Spanish American Novel., Ralph Kite

American Studies ETDs

The purpose of this study is to examine the in-fluence of the literary movement called socialist realism on the Spanish American novel. Basically an invention of the Soviet Communists of the 1930's, the theory calls for the creation of literature which espouses the Marxist interpretation of society. Its international character combined with the militancy and the cohesiveness of its advocates has allowed it to assume proportions in Spanish America which its numbers would not otherwise merit,

A Study Of The Motivation Of Students Who Completed The Junior Year Of High School, And Who Are Members Of Socially, Economically And Culturally Deprived Areas., Maxwell J. Ihrig

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Project Upward Bound was a program initiated by the Office of Economic Opportunity to wage war on talent waste in our high schools throughout the United States today. The program itself was really a pre-college program for low income youngsters. It was perhaps best summed up in the following quotations from Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, at the 1965 White House Conference on Education: "Millions of youngsters from impoverished backgrounds are caught in a downward spiral of second-rate education, functional illiteracy, delinquency, dependency and despair. How can we halt this tragic waste of human resources? How can we turn it …

Input And Output Speed Components Of Learning-To-Learn, Jon G. Rogers May 1967

Input And Output Speed Components Of Learning-To-Learn, Jon G. Rogers

Psychology ETDs

Input and output speed were investigated to determine if they were components of learning-to-learn. The major criterion used to distinguish learning-to-learn from warm-up has generally (e.g. Hamilton, 1950) been the temporal persistence of learning-to-learn phenomena.

Sixteen paired-associate practice lists consisting of high frequency words were presented for two trials to four acquisition groups in two sessions a day apart. Each acquisition group received input at either a fast (2 sec.) or slow (5 sec.) rate. Input speed (i.e., study interval) was the time the stimulus-response unit appeared. Subjects were required to respond to a light occurring at either a fast …

The Effect Of Associative Factors On Generalization Gradients In Shape Recognition, Robert L. Feuge May 1967

The Effect Of Associative Factors On Generalization Gradients In Shape Recognition, Robert L. Feuge

Psychology ETDs

It is generally observed that positive transfer will ensue from an A-B, A-C paradigm, provided the responses, B and C, are sufficiently different so as to minimize interlist confusion (Arnoult, 1957; Ellis, 1965). This paradigm, known as the "stimulus predifferentiation paradigm", produces positive transfer presumably because pretraining on relevant stimuli (A) differentiates the stimuli, making them less "confusing" or more "distinctive". This enhanced distinctiveness increases the ease with which new responses may be attached to the stimuli.

The Effect Of Two Art Product Evaluative Systems Upon Aesthetic Design Sensitivity And Personal Art Attitude, James J. Srubek May 1967

The Effect Of Two Art Product Evaluative Systems Upon Aesthetic Design Sensitivity And Personal Art Attitude, James J. Srubek

Art & Art History ETDs

The aims and objectives of art education as an educational discipline have been discussed and argued since the formation of the Committee in Drawing by the National Education Association in 1899 (Lanier, 1964, p. 31). The situation is no better today than it was then. At a seminar in art education for research and curriculum development held at the Pennsylvania State University in the Summer of 1966, the leading minds in the fields of art education, psychology, research, the fine arts, art criticism, and education in general, met to discuss the current status of art education. In a summary statement …
