Explorations In Personal Space., Alice Biernoff Hiat Oct 1970

Explorations In Personal Space., Alice Biernoff Hiat

Psychology ETDs

It has been observed by a number of workers that humans tend to maintain some degree of physical distance between themselves and other persons or objects. This "individual distance" (ID) is assumed to reflect an area surrounding the person that he regards as a part of himself, rather like a portable territory; this area is termed "personal space" (PS).

Though there have been several experimental studies of PS in humans, none has determined the test-retest reliability of ID, nor has individual consistency of relative size of ID over a range of situations been investigated. The present study was designed to …

A Bicultural Study Of Value Orientations, Leisure Attitudes And Activity Preferences, Royal G. Jackson Oct 1970

A Bicultural Study Of Value Orientations, Leisure Attitudes And Activity Preferences, Royal G. Jackson

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

A significant development of the twentieth-century has been the emergence in the United States and in other industrialized nations of a way of life increasingly oriented toward leisure rather than work. The body of knowledge gradually being formulated to cope with this new concern is still lacking in at least one important dimension. Insufficient attention has been given to the role of value orientations in the formation of attitudes toward leisure and leisure pursuits.

The Modification Of Form And Color Responding In Young Children As A Function Of Differential Reinforcement And Verbaliziation., Joan F. Gusinow Sep 1970

The Modification Of Form And Color Responding In Young Children As A Function Of Differential Reinforcement And Verbaliziation., Joan F. Gusinow

Psychology ETDs

When young children are presented with a learning task composed of two dimensional stimuli that vary along both. a form and a color continuum, they solve the problem in a consistent and unidimensional manner. This response bias, or dimensional dominance, has in the literature been called a form or color preference. The results of developmental studies have indicated that children at the. youngest ages display a form preference which gradually shifts to a color preference by the age of 4-1/2 years and then this preference shifts back. to form. This lawful relationship has then explained by developmental theorists as being …

The Effects Of False Feedback And Stimulus Intensity Upon Simple Reaction Time:An Investigation Of The Variable Criterion Model., Kerm Henriksen Sep 1970

The Effects Of False Feedback And Stimulus Intensity Upon Simple Reaction Time:An Investigation Of The Variable Criterion Model., Kerm Henriksen

Psychology ETDs

The purpose of the present simple reaction time (RT) study was to evaluate the application of the variable criterion model to the effects of false feedback and stimulus intensity. The variable criterion model is a decision-theory approach relating stimulus intensity and response evocation. According to the model, stimulus intensity determines the rate of neural events or "impulses" originating from stimulus onset, whereas contextual and motivational variables determine the S's decision criterion, or the number of impulses that must accumulate before a response is made. The time required to reach the criterion value is the reaction time. Reaction time is thus …

Teacher Preparation Needed For Those Planning To Teach The "Culturally Different" In Grades 5 Through 9 As Perceived By Teachers Presently Teaching The "Culturally Different.", Colleen Hennessey Sep 1970

Teacher Preparation Needed For Those Planning To Teach The "Culturally Different" In Grades 5 Through 9 As Perceived By Teachers Presently Teaching The "Culturally Different.", Colleen Hennessey

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This study was designed to obtain and analyze the perceptions of teachers of children who are culturally different regarding the curriculum necessary to prepare students to teach children who are culturally different. The teachers were at the time of the study, teaching in grades 5 through 9 in schools in New Orleans, Louisiana, Houston, Texas, and Dallas, Texas, designated as schools for children who were culturally different. Information concerning programs of teacher preparation was secured through the use of a questionnaire. Three hundred twenty-four questionnaires were usable for analysis.

Tabulation of the data from the questionnaire indicated the following inter-related …

Factors Affecting The Auditory Memory Span Of Mentally Retarded Subjects., Elizabeth Smyth Hirsch Aug 1970

Factors Affecting The Auditory Memory Span Of Mentally Retarded Subjects., Elizabeth Smyth Hirsch

Special Education ETDs

The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term auditory memory of a group of institutionalized mentally retarded subjects. The effect of manipulating methods of presenting the digits in a digit span test was examined and the relationships between auditory memory for digits and various subject variables were explores. The hypotheses studied were: 1) There will be no significant difference in digit span scores because of a difference in the rate of presentation of the digits; 2) There will be no significant difference in digit span scores when a reward is given for the correct answer; 3) There will …

Demographic, Personality And Nonverbal Perception Correlates Of Communication Sensitivity, William Patrick Neal Aug 1970

Demographic, Personality And Nonverbal Perception Correlates Of Communication Sensitivity, William Patrick Neal

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

The general purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of demographic, personality and nonverbal perception variables to communication sensitivity. The examination concerned the relative linearity or non-linearity and the statistical significance of each relationship. The specific purpose of this study was to establish the concurrent validity of the UNM Conversation Self-Report Inventory. The Conversation Inventory was used as the measure of communication sensitivity in this study. The demographic variables were measured by the Demographic Questionnaire designed by this author. The Questionnaire provided demographic information ranging from age, sex, etc. to attitude toward the future and political beliefs. Three …

The Relative Importance Of Structure And Individual Differences In Determining Behavior In Two Person Games, Ronald A. Flint Jul 1970

The Relative Importance Of Structure And Individual Differences In Determining Behavior In Two Person Games, Ronald A. Flint

Psychology ETDs

Three factors have been proposed in the literature as determinants of game playing behavior. These are: a structural factor, a factor arising out of the interaction between the players, and an individual differences factor. A recent study was able to separate the structural factor from the combined effects of the interaction factor and the individual differences factor. This was done by using a within-subjects design and between-game correlations to uncover behavioral consistencies across different games. Between-game consistencies were found, thus indicating that the structural factor is not the sole determinant of game playing behavior. However, because the interaction factor and …
