Iconicity Effects In Translation Direction: Bimodal Bilingual Lexical Processing, Benjamin Anible Jul 2016

Iconicity Effects In Translation Direction: Bimodal Bilingual Lexical Processing, Benjamin Anible

Linguistics ETDs

Second language learners of American Sign Language (ASL) have an unusual preference for translating "forward" into their second language (Nicodemus & Emmorey 2013), in contrast to spoken language bilinguals' preference for translating "backward" into their first language (Seleskovich, 1976). The typical bilingual preference for backward lexical translation is modeled by Kroll and Stewart (1994) who showed that forward translation uses slower conceptual mediation and backward translation uses faster lexical mediation, but this asymmetry alone fails to explain signed language bilinguals' forward preference. Prior attempts to explain these conflicting patterns for signing vs. non-signing bilinguals based on the prevalence of iconicity …

Chinese De Constructions In Secondary Predication: Historical And Typological Perspectives, You-Min Lin Jul 2016

Chinese De Constructions In Secondary Predication: Historical And Typological Perspectives, You-Min Lin

Linguistics ETDs

This dissertation investigates the history of Chinese DE [tə] constructions in light of the typology of secondary predication. A secondary predicate, such as hot in He drank the tea hot, is a predicate that provides subsidiary information to a substructure (the participant tea) of the more salient primary event (drank). Mandarin DE features in two strategies: (i) a DE-marked primary event elaborated by a predicate following it, and (ii) a DE-marked secondary predicate preposed to the primary predicate. Focusing on Late Medieval Chinese (7th to mid-13th c.), the study examines the evolution of the DE-marked strategies from three distinctive constructions: …

Rethinking Premarital Agreements: A Collaborative Approach, Elizabeth R. Carter Jul 2016

Rethinking Premarital Agreements: A Collaborative Approach, Elizabeth R. Carter

New Mexico Law Review

The legal profession—in viewing entry into a premarital agreement as an antagonistic process—has erected additional ethical barriers to hiring an attorney to prepare a premarital agreement. For those couples that do decide to pursue a marriage contract, the barriers put in place by the common law and by the legal profession inject unnecessary expense and adversarial decision-making to what could—and should—be a relatively inexpensive and collaborative process. Common law and the legal profession have, in a sense, created a self-fulfilling prophecy. By adopting a dual-representation, dissolution-focused model for entering into premarital agreements, we increase the chances that agreements will be …

Using Collaborative Work Groups To Improve Teachers Use Of Ebps For Students With Disruptive Behavior, Deirdre Muldoon

Special Education ETDs

Three teachers and one assistant principal were recruited from a middle school in a large metropolitan area of the southwestern United States to implement evidence-based practices (EBP). The teachers implemented EBPs in self-continued classrooms to ameliorate the disruptive behavior of three students. The recruited teachers and assistant principal participated in collaborative work groups biweekly for a total of 12 weeks. The teachers chose the EBPs that they were interested in implementing, and the collaborative work groups served as a forum for learning about the EBPs. Data sources included coding and thematic analysis of initial and final interviews, recording of the …

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

Purpose — This study explored the learning processes related to projects used by adults with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), along with the environmental factors that aided or detracted from learning. Design/methodology/approach — Using a modified appreciative inquiry type question approach, adults with ADD/ADHD were asked to participate in either an online questionnaire or a focus group conducted in late 2015. The population consisted of adults, age 18 or older, who could attest to having ADD/ADHD diagnosed in childhood or as an adult. The intent was to discover successful strategies employed by this population to …

Initiating Self-Management Of Lifestyle-Related Chronic Disease Resulting From Unhealthy Weight: Identifying Thoughts And Actions Through Phenomenology, Celeste Lee Jun 2016

Initiating Self-Management Of Lifestyle-Related Chronic Disease Resulting From Unhealthy Weight: Identifying Thoughts And Actions Through Phenomenology, Celeste Lee

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

A heuristic phenomenological approach drew out participants identified factors that initiated self-management of unhealthy weight-related chronic diseases; resulting in severity attenuation of current chronic disease(s) and lowered risk of comorbidity development. Prior to this study, there have been three omissions relating to older individuals who have unhealthy weight-related chronic diseases. First, direct first-person narratives of the process to self-management have not been reported. Second, the self-identification of the initiating factors leading to self-management has not been found in scholarly literature. Finally, cognitive reflection, an activity that results in paradigmatic shifts in adult behaviors has not been discussed from the first-person …

Teaching Choreography In A University Setting: Experiencing Collaboration Through Dramaturgical Thinking, Ariel Burge Jun 2016

Teaching Choreography In A University Setting: Experiencing Collaboration Through Dramaturgical Thinking, Ariel Burge

Theatre & Dance ETDs

I began my research with the intent of finding a way for student choreographers in university dance programs to become more involved in their peers work. In addition I hoped to find a teaching model that would provide the experience of peer collaboration. I found in my own training that I wanted to have more interaction with my peers through working creative relationships. I felt that choreography classes were the ideal place to implement a working collaborative experience. Through my research I discovered the concept of dance dramaturgy. I realized that choreography students engaging in the practice of dramaturgical thinking …

Plato's Orpheus: The Philosophical Appropriation Of Orphic Formulae, Dannu Hütwohl Jun 2016

Plato's Orpheus: The Philosophical Appropriation Of Orphic Formulae, Dannu Hütwohl

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

In this project I explore Platos deployment and transposition of Orphic eschatological ideas through his incorporation of Orphic formulae, based on the Olbian Tablets and Orphic Gold Tablets, into his philosophical settings throughout his dialogues. I show how Plato deploys Orphic formulae throughout his dialogues in order to promote his philosophy, which points to Plato's knowledge of Orphic doctrine. First I analyze Plato's use of specific terminology and formulae in eschatological contexts. Then I look specifically at the Orphic term poinē in terms of the Orphic myth of Dionysus. I contend with the arguments of Edmonds who redefines the Greek …

Expanding Your Cognitive Capacity: An Assessment Of The Neuroplastic Changes Associated With Mindfulness Training And Transcranial Stimulation, Michael Hunter Jun 2016

Expanding Your Cognitive Capacity: An Assessment Of The Neuroplastic Changes Associated With Mindfulness Training And Transcranial Stimulation, Michael Hunter

Psychology ETDs

Given that mindfulness-based training techniques (MBT) stimulates and pushes ones core cognitive control capacity limits, brain stimulation techniques, such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), can be used to facilitate the ongoing neural patterns of functional connectivity toward long-lasting neuroplastic change. The current study assessed the combined effects of MBT with right frontal tDCS on cognitive control abilities and their corresponding brain patterns of activation using electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This study found an enhancement in working memory and sustained attention performance along with changes in the attention-related P3 component and its theta and alpha oscillatory …

Dyslexia And Mindfulness: Can Mental Training Ameliorate The Symptoms Of Dyslexia?, Julia Keller Jun 2016

Dyslexia And Mindfulness: Can Mental Training Ameliorate The Symptoms Of Dyslexia?, Julia Keller

Psychology ETDs

Dyslexia (DYS) can be defined as a reading disorder that is not caused by sensory or cognitive deficits, or by a lack of motivation or adequate reading instruction. Remediation of a deficit in phonological processing has been the focus of most DYS interventions to date, but these studies have had despairingly little impact on generalized reading abilities. Reading Recovery and mindfulness (MF) training are two interventions that emphasize the development of metacognition. Reading Recovery teaches children how to use multiple metacognitive strategies (e.g., using context clues, making predictions) while in the process of decoding and comprehending text. MF, or mental …

Primary Language, Maternal Language Use, And Cognitive Outcomes Among Preschoolers Born Very Low Birth Weight, Natalia Moss

Psychology ETDs

Very low birth weight (VLBW; ≤1500 grams) preschoolers are at risk for cognitive and executive functioning (EF) difficulties. Maternal language quality may impact cognitive development in VLBW children. The aims of this study were to explore differences in maternal language (Spanish, English) and child cognitive abilities, and to explore associations between maternal language use (verbal scaffolding and structuring) and child cognitive abilities in VLBW preschoolers (3.5-4 years). Caregivers reported sociodemographic information. Cognitive abilities were measured using the WPPSI-III (VIQ, PIQ), Bear Dragon, and Gift Delay Peek scores. Results showed English speaking children scored higher on VIQ. For English speaking children, …

Maternal Interactive Behaviors And Developmental Outcomes In Preschoolers Born Very Low Birth Weight, Rebecca E. Rieger Jun 2016

Maternal Interactive Behaviors And Developmental Outcomes In Preschoolers Born Very Low Birth Weight, Rebecca E. Rieger

Psychology ETDs

Children born very low birth weight (VLBW) are at greater risk for cognitive and executive deficits than children born normal birth weight. One factor in development is parental wellbeing. Parents who report more depressive symptoms and lower perception of resources have poorer quality interactive behaviors. This study investigated the associations between maternal interactive behaviors during play and developmental outcomes in preschoolers born VLBW. A secondary goal was to understand the associations among maternal depressive symptoms, perception of resources, and interactive behaviors. A tertiary goal was to investigate racial and ethnic differences in maternal behaviors. Overall, one maternal behavior was negatively …

Also, in this case study, grit does not account for more predictive value of college academic …

A Grounded Theory Pilot Study Exploring The Female Process Of Becoming A Survivor After Experiencing Sexual Assault, Angela Catena Jun 2016

A Grounded Theory Pilot Study Exploring The Female Process Of Becoming A Survivor After Experiencing Sexual Assault, Angela Catena

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

This pilot study utilized constructivist grounded theory to explore the process of identifying as a survivor among women who have been sexually assaulted. An overwhelming majority of research available on survivors of traumatic events, such as sexual assault, focus primarily on the psychological, and sometimes physical, reactions. The literature fails to investigate personal influences, experiences, and processes on a more individual level; rather it discusses symptomology and treatment modalities used to alleviate symptoms related to various clinical diagnoses. Seven women were interviewed twice exploring their specific journey and processes to identifying as a survivor after victimization. Six theoretical phases emerged …

"Yes, No, Maybe": Loyalty And Betrayal Reconsidered: The Tule Lake Pilgrimage, Ella-Kari Loftfield Jun 2016

"Yes, No, Maybe": Loyalty And Betrayal Reconsidered: The Tule Lake Pilgrimage, Ella-Kari Loftfield

History ETDs

This project aims to explain how the contemporary Tule Lake Committee commemorates and honors the Japanese Americans who found themselves incarcerated at the Tule Lake Segregation Center in northern California after 'failing' the loyalty questionnaire administered to them by the War Relocation Authority during World War II. The Tule Lake Committee holds biennial pilgrimages which have become increasingly popular in the last decade. A 'thick description' of the 2010 pilgrimage and an analysis of the pilgrimage themes shows how the Tule Lake Committee honors the experience of Japanese Americans whose history was written out of the collective memory in the …

Hombres Normativos: The Creation And Inculcation Of Martial Masculinity During The Franco Regime In Spain (1939—1975), Ian Kent Winchester Jun 2016

Hombres Normativos: The Creation And Inculcation Of Martial Masculinity During The Franco Regime In Spain (1939—1975), Ian Kent Winchester

History ETDs

This dissertation investigates the Franco dictatorships construction of normative masculinity through mandatory military service in Spain from 1939—1975. As part of the regime's efforts to normalize its version of Spanish nationalism, it institutionalized a militarized masculinity in the armed forces. For its sources, the project employs military publications such as autobiographies, journals, training manuals, and magazines as well as courts-martial, service records, and military statistics. Using this rich variety of evidence, the study demonstrates that a gendered conception of the soldier occupied a privileged position in the solidification of the Franco regime's power, the intended moral regeneration of Spanish society, …

Togethering And Positioning: The Experience Of Registered Nurses Of Clinically Inflicted Pain, Hannelore Gertrud Krieger Jun 2016

Togethering And Positioning: The Experience Of Registered Nurses Of Clinically Inflicted Pain, Hannelore Gertrud Krieger

Nursing ETDs

This study explored the experience of registered nurses of clinically inflicted pain (CIP). This study showed that the experience of nurses is distinctly different from the experience of patients. This study revealed the constructed nature of CIP and nurses estimation of CIPs painfulness. Nurses utilized a number of processes to alleviate their discomfort associated with having to inflict pain. Nurses also utilized processes that effectively changed CIP to mean something other than pain, specifically the processes of unmaking the patient experience and remaking of CIP. Some nurses were conflicted at least some of the time about CIP. This created a …

Becoming Gay: The Formation And Meaning Of Lgbt Political Identity, Kimberly Proctor Jun 2016

Becoming Gay: The Formation And Meaning Of Lgbt Political Identity, Kimberly Proctor

Political Science ETDs

Data suggest that there are at least 11 million lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in the United States. Further, evidence demonstrates that there is a sexuality gap' (Hertzog 1996) in American politics with LGBTs out-participating their heterosexual peers and gay politics dominating political media. However, scholars remain unable to explain why LGBT political identity forms or how this identity matters for political behavior. This dissertation examines the political foundations of LGBT identity and argues that discrimination, engagement in group-specific public spaces, and the influence of the Religious Right have fostered the development of group consciousness in gay Americans. …

Mixing The Roman Miles: Character Development In Terence's Eunuchus, Samantha Davis Jun 2016

Mixing The Roman Miles: Character Development In Terence's Eunuchus, Samantha Davis

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

In my thesis I explore Terences innovative development of three stock characters: Chaerea, the adulescens amator, Thraso, the miles gloriosus, and Gnatho, the parasitus. In the Eunuchus Terence provides each of these characters with a mythological parallel that reveals the character's inner thoughts, motives, and justifications, as well as their self-perceived position within Roman society. The first chapter traces the development of the figure of the adulescens amator in Roman literature and examines how Terence's incorporation of mythological burlesque defies dramatic conventions. The second chapter analyzes key dramatic relationships that suggest a parallel to the historical relationship between Rome and …

In this study I investigated the psycho-educational component of the Healing in Resonance model of treatment as implemented at the Attachment Healing Center for working with children who have been identified as having disorganized attachment. Multi-case methodology was used with five families representing five parents and five children. Grounded theory was used to analyze the journals, interviews and focus group discourse of the participants. There were also some quantitative tools used to diagnose the children and to quantify their behavioral changes. The grounded theory analysis revealed the importance of the childs caregivers taking ownership for how they show up in …

The Influence Of Job-Embedded Professional Learning And Leadership On School Professional Culture, Zachary A. Leonard Jun 2016

The Influence Of Job-Embedded Professional Learning And Leadership On School Professional Culture, Zachary A. Leonard

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Educational leaders are increasingly facing low student achievement and engagement, low teacher morale, and more rigorous standards that require greater teacher preparation and professional development. There is overwhelming evidence from the literature on successful school systems that restructuring schools to make time for job-embedded professional learning (JEPL) with a relentless focus on continuous improvement will not only improve student learning and achievement but also improve school professional culture. Despite such near-universal agreement among educational scholars and practitioners alike, we see very little professional learning in U.S. schools. The absence of professional learning in schools provides a compelling need to understand …
