Finding The Self In Tension: The Importance Of Play For Embodied Consciousness In Post-Kantian Philosophical Anthropology And Psychology, Jaime Thomas Denison Aug 2016

Finding The Self In Tension: The Importance Of Play For Embodied Consciousness In Post-Kantian Philosophical Anthropology And Psychology, Jaime Thomas Denison

Philosophy ETDs

My dissertation looks at how four figures in the German philosophical tradition employ a similar concept of play in their models of the Ich', often translated as 'Self', as they explore the complexities of establishing a unity within embodied consciousness. These four figures are: Friedrich Schiller, F.W.J. Schelling, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Sigmund Freud. I situate this concept of play within the contemporary debate of the interdisciplinary field of play studies, showing that what emerges is a theory of play that avoids marginalizing it to children and leisure, but rather recognizes it as a state of consciousness that provides a semblance …

Psychologically Healthy Eating And Nutritionally Healthy Eating: Exploring A Two-Factor Theory Of Healthy Eating, Katherine E. Belon Aug 2016

Psychologically Healthy Eating And Nutritionally Healthy Eating: Exploring A Two-Factor Theory Of Healthy Eating, Katherine E. Belon

Psychology ETDs

Background: While much research has investigated disordered eating, obesity, and weight loss treatments, less work has focused on creating a positive definition of psychologically healthy eating. Such a definition could inform obesity and eating disorder treatments. While intuitive eating appears to approximate a definition of psychologically healthy eating, it was believed that adding concepts of moderation, flexibility, and food enjoyment would improve its construct validity, as previous research has supported these constructs as important for psychologically healthy eating. The current paper presents a two-factor model of healthy eating, one that incorporates both psychologically healthy and nutritionally healthy eating. Method: A …

The Relation Of Vocational Identity Development To College Freshmen Retention: A Short-Term Longitudinal Study, Cheryl Ann Bryan Aug 2016

The Relation Of Vocational Identity Development To College Freshmen Retention: A Short-Term Longitudinal Study, Cheryl Ann Bryan

Psychology ETDs

The overarching goal of this study was to investigate vocational identity formation and how it influences first year college student retention. Specifically, does the vocational identity of Freshmen college students, who have been accepted to college directly from high school, relate to whether or not they drop out of college in their first year of studies? Students were recruited in New Mexico at both the University of New Mexico (a 4-year university) and Central New Mexico Community College (a 2-year community college). This study was unique in that it employed a short-term longitudinal design to help interpret why some students …

Increasing Sexual Offenders Motivation To Engage In Mandated Substance Abuse Treatment: A Brief Motivational Intervention', Julie Brovko Aug 2016

Increasing Sexual Offenders Motivation To Engage In Mandated Substance Abuse Treatment: A Brief Motivational Intervention', Julie Brovko

Psychology ETDs

Background and Aims Previous research has shown that the rate of recidivism for sexual offenders is related to their substance use. Other research has shown that motivation to engage in treatment and motivation to decrease substance use are related to substance use treatment outcome. Thus, the overall goal of the current study was to increase sexual offenders motivation to engage in mandated substance abuse treatment and decrease their future substance use. There were five aims: (1)Test the feasibility of a brief motivation intervention with a population of sexual offenders who were court mandated to substance abuse treatment. (2) Examine change …

Competing Goals: The Effect Of Social Expectations On Women's Judgments Of And Responses To Sexual Victimization Risk, Jennifer Crawford Aug 2016

Competing Goals: The Effect Of Social Expectations On Women's Judgments Of And Responses To Sexual Victimization Risk, Jennifer Crawford

Psychology ETDs

Researchers have identified many variables associated with the risk of sexual victimization among college women, including a previous history of sexual victimization and the ability to appraise and respond to victimization risk. Nurius and Norris (1996) included these and other variables in their theoretical model of factors influencing womens sexual victimization risk appraisal and response. The current study attempted to examine one part of that complex model, the role of social goals and expectations in women's perceptions of and responses to victimization risk. The study also used a social information processing model to inform a task-based method of measuring women's …

Incorporating Alternative Sources Of Reinforcement Through Online Cra Goal Setting And The Effect On Substance Use In College Students, Shirley Mae Crotwell Aug 2016

Incorporating Alternative Sources Of Reinforcement Through Online Cra Goal Setting And The Effect On Substance Use In College Students, Shirley Mae Crotwell

Psychology ETDs

Emerging adulthood is a transition period where many college students choose to engage in high-risk substance use (e.g., binge drinking). This choice to misuse substances occurs during a developmental period when students are faced with an increased responsibility to structure and manage their time across multiple personal (and potentially competing) goals. The current study approached the problem of college drinking by using two procedures from the Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA). Rating current happiness and coupling it with goal setting was evaluated as a potential means of increasing substance-free reinforcement that could compete with (i.e., reduce) alcohol use. Males and females …

A Randomized Clinical Trial Of A Brief Motivational Intervention For Incarcerated Drinkers, Mandy Owens Aug 2016

A Randomized Clinical Trial Of A Brief Motivational Intervention For Incarcerated Drinkers, Mandy Owens

Psychology ETDs

Almost half of convicted jail inmates have an alcohol use disorder and many are released to environments that put them in contact with network members and cues that make them more likely to relapse on alcohol or drugs. Given the high-risk period immediately following release, the purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of a brief motivational intervention administered just prior to release to increase substance use treatment entry and attendance, decrease alcohol and drug use, and change social networks for inmates with alcohol use disorders. Forty adult male inmates were consented into the study and randomized to …

Minority Adolescent Health: A Factor Analytic Approach Towards Conceptualizing Health Behaviors And Resilience Constructs From The New Mexico Youth Risk Resiliency Survey, Jeremiah Simmons Aug 2016

Minority Adolescent Health: A Factor Analytic Approach Towards Conceptualizing Health Behaviors And Resilience Constructs From The New Mexico Youth Risk Resiliency Survey, Jeremiah Simmons

Psychology ETDs

Current researchers in the adolescent health field are beginning to argue that the descriptive knowledge base of adolescent health lacks a strong conceptual base and may be inadequate to sufficiently inform a comprehensive assessment of adolescent health behaviors. This study aimed to build upon the conceptual base by integrating a descriptive epidemiologic study (2013 New Mexico Youth Risk Resilience Survey) with psychological theory and factor analytic methodologies to better understand the relationship between health behaviors and resilience factors. This study replicated a previously identified four-factor health behavior structure and an expanded six-factor health behavior structure across a racially/ethnically diverse sample. …

Feasibility Of Daily Assessment And Predictors Of Daily Quality Of Life During Treatment For Lung Cancer, Laurie Steffen Aug 2016

Feasibility Of Daily Assessment And Predictors Of Daily Quality Of Life During Treatment For Lung Cancer, Laurie Steffen

Psychology ETDs

Most lung cancer patients are diagnosed with locally advanced or advance disease, which makes improving quality of life a critical component of treatment. Empirical research on daily quality of life in lung cancer is lacking, despite a growing focus on patient-reported outcomes in oncology. The goal of this study was to determine the feasibility of daily assessment of quality of life and to identify predictors of daily quality of life in lung cancer patients undergoing treatment. It was hypothesized that clinical characteristics such as treatment type would predict feasibility. It was hypothesized that patients with higher hope would report better …

Behavioral Economic Measurement Of Mistrust: Associations With Treatment Seeking, Engagement, And Outcome In A Sexual Offender Population With Substance Use Disorders, Adam Wilson Aug 2016

Behavioral Economic Measurement Of Mistrust: Associations With Treatment Seeking, Engagement, And Outcome In A Sexual Offender Population With Substance Use Disorders, Adam Wilson

Psychology ETDs

The purposes of this study were fourfold. First, we tested the relationship between participant performance on a computerized behavioral economic task, the Trust Game and participant performance on a self-report measure of trait-level trust. Second, we examined whether baseline trait-level trust was associated with motivation to seek treatment. Third, we examined the utility of each trust measure as a predictor of motivation to seek treatment, treatment engagement, and treatment outcome. Finally, we tested the relationship between trust and treatment condition (brief motivational intervention or psychoeducation) as predictors of treatment seeking, treatment engagement and treatment outcome. Participants were 20 males recruited …

Partially And Fully Time-Unstructured Residual Variance-Covariance Matrices In Growth Curve Modeling: Consequences Of Ignoring Variability In Times Of Assessment, Patrick Coulombe Aug 2016

Partially And Fully Time-Unstructured Residual Variance-Covariance Matrices In Growth Curve Modeling: Consequences Of Ignoring Variability In Times Of Assessment, Patrick Coulombe

Psychology ETDs

In a longitudinal study, the data can be either time-structured, where the times of assessment are the same across participants, or time-unstructured, where the times of assessment vary across participants. Currently, growth curve modeling can accommodate time-unstructured data when modeling average change over time (fixed effects) and variability in change over time (random effects), but not residual variances and covariances. Through Monte Carlo simulation, a first goal of this study was to determine the effects of ignoring variability in times of assessment when modeling the residual variances and covariances in linear growth curve models in terms of convergence, parameter bias, …

Associations Among Sexual Victimization Experiences, Coping Strategies, And Psychopathology In Heterosexual And Sexual Minority Women, Gabriela Lopez Aug 2016

Associations Among Sexual Victimization Experiences, Coping Strategies, And Psychopathology In Heterosexual And Sexual Minority Women, Gabriela Lopez

Psychology ETDs

This study examined the associations among sexual minority status, adult sexual victimization, childhood experiences of abuse and neglect, coping strategies, and psychopathology in womens sexual assault experiences. One hundred and seventy-seven women (n = 177) were recruited via the Internet to complete an online study asking them about their most distressing/severe sexual victimization experience. Non-parametric tests were used to examine associations among the variables. There were significant associations between sexual minority status and both victimization severity and sexual revictimization, with sexual minority status being associated with higher levels of victimization severity and a higher likelihood of being revictimized. There were …

Measurement Invariance Of The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (Ede-Q) In A College Sample Of Non-Hispanic White And Hispanic Women, Kelsey Serier Aug 2016

Measurement Invariance Of The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (Ede-Q) In A College Sample Of Non-Hispanic White And Hispanic Women, Kelsey Serier

Psychology ETDs

Objective: Rates of body dissatisfaction and eating disorders have increased in racial and ethnic minority groups, and yet the validity of various commonly-used eating disorder instruments has not been established in these populations. The primary goal of this study was to test the measurement invariance of one such measure, the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), across a non-clinical sample of non-Hispanic white and Hispanic undergraduate women. Secondary goals of this study were to determine the factor structure of the EDE-Q in this sample, provide information on EDE-Q norms in a non-clinical sample of Hispanic undergraduate women, and examine the effect …

The Development Of The Sexual Assault Script Scale, Kari A. Leiting Aug 2016

The Development Of The Sexual Assault Script Scale, Kari A. Leiting

Psychology ETDs

This mixed methods study involved the qualitative development of and quantitative testing of the Sexual Assault Script Scale (SASS). In Study 1, 31 undergraduate women participated in semi-structured interviews that included qualitative questions about their expectations of a hypothetical sexual assault. Information from these interviews then was used to create items for the SASS. These items asked women to estimate the likelihood that specific contextual characteristics would be present during a hypothetical sexual assault. In Study 2, 500 undergraduate women completed the SASS. An exploratory factor analysis of the SASS resulted in a 40-item, four-factor solution. The subscales of the …

Social Network Characteristics As They Relate To The Mental Health Of Refugees, Richard Greene Aug 2016

Social Network Characteristics As They Relate To The Mental Health Of Refugees, Richard Greene

Sociology ETDs

This study (N=168) builds on a long lineage of scholarly work connecting social networks to mental health by exploring relationships between refugee social network compositions—network size, proportion of same sex ties, proportion of same community ties, and role heterogeneity—and self-reported symptoms of PTSD, depression, and anxiety. This study finds that newly resettled refugee social networks are small and social isolation is common; approximately 30% of participants reported having no local social network ties. For refugees with local social network ties, the composition of social networks does appear to matter. Having more same sex ties was negatively associated with higher mental …

Do Online Gaming Experiences Affect Civic Engagement? The Relationship Between Gaming Experiences, Parental Involvement, And Real World Civic Engagement, James Letterhos Aug 2016

Do Online Gaming Experiences Affect Civic Engagement? The Relationship Between Gaming Experiences, Parental Involvement, And Real World Civic Engagement, James Letterhos

Sociology ETDs

The majority of literature that concerns itself with the effects of video games and youth focus on negative potential outcomes, like the potential for increased antisocial behavior. Whats more, that literature also focuses on the content of the games themselves and not necessarily on the actions of other players within games. This study considers what happens when players witness antisocial behavior acted out by other players as well as intervention against that behavior and the role that parental involvement plays in mediating the direct effects of gaming and youth civic engagement. Weighing three differing perspectives on the relationship between video …

Latino Ideology, Congressional Polarization, And Racial Threat: An Analysis Of The Influence Of Latinos On Congressional Politics, Lisa Sanchez Aug 2016

Latino Ideology, Congressional Polarization, And Racial Threat: An Analysis Of The Influence Of Latinos On Congressional Politics, Lisa Sanchez

Political Science ETDs

This dissertation examines the relationship between changes in demographics and changes in congressional polarization. It comes out of two important trends in American politics in the last several decades: (1) Rising Latino Population and (2) Rise in Party polarization in Congress. Latinos are the primary source of immigration to the United States and high fertility rates among this population are contributing to a record number of Latinos becoming eligible to vote. According to Pew every 30 seconds, a Latino becomes eligible to vote totaling 66,000 every month. In terms of the polarization trend, Congressional polarization is at its highest point …

"The Bellows / Of Experience": The Modernist Love Poem And Its Legacy, Stephanie Spong Aug 2016

"The Bellows / Of Experience": The Modernist Love Poem And Its Legacy, Stephanie Spong

English Language and Literature ETDs

The vein of experimental love poetry examined in this project takes advantage of the friction generated by charging both form and content with innovation. The troubled relationship between sex and power is knit directly into the long and dynamic history of love poetry, but there has yet to be a published monograph on the modernist love poem and its implications for literary history. This dissertation fills a major gap in scholarship and speaks to the broader social concerns addressed by public discourse on sex, sexuality, and eros. The body of modernist love poetry includes allusions to traditional love poetry—a tradition …

"Crimes Against The Order Of The Family, Public Morality, And Decency": Sexual Violence And Jurisprudence In Coahuila, Mexico, 1871-1931, Sandra Elizabeth Lara Aug 2016

"Crimes Against The Order Of The Family, Public Morality, And Decency": Sexual Violence And Jurisprudence In Coahuila, Mexico, 1871-1931, Sandra Elizabeth Lara

History ETDs

This study focuses on how institutions, the law, and litigants of sexual crimes interpreted estupro (seduction/deflowering), rape, and incest crimes in the northeastern Mexican state of Coahuila during 1871-1931. The dissertation explores the diverse ways that liberal legislation proved disadvantageous to women and especially young girls. By taking a regional approach, I examine the role that Coahuila's courtroom practices and laws had on the adjudication of sexual crimes. I argue that despite the liberal lawmakers' intents to modernize criminal law, women and children were not protected from sexual predators. During the study's period, two pieces of national legislation that governed …

Brief For The American Association On Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities (Aaidd), And The Arc Of The United States As Amicus Curiae, James W. Ellis, Ann M. Delpha, Carol M. Suzuki, Steven Homer, David Stout, April Land Aug 2016

Brief For The American Association On Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities (Aaidd), And The Arc Of The United States As Amicus Curiae, James W. Ellis, Ann M. Delpha, Carol M. Suzuki, Steven Homer, David Stout, April Land

Faculty Scholarship

As with any field of scientific inquiry, our understanding of the condition of intellectual disability is improved and enhanced over time by continuing, rigorous study and analysis. The scientific study and the diagnosis of intellectual disability involve issues important to scholars and clinicians. But amici believe that there is no need for this Court to become enmeshed in the details and intricacies of those scholarly efforts in order to resolve the instant case and to provide guidance to lower courts in their task of fairly adjudicating cases under Atkins v. Virginia, 536 U.S. 304 (2002). This Court need only affirm …

Perceptions Of Reversible And Permanent Contraception In India, Neha Rani Bhardwaj Jul 2016

Perceptions Of Reversible And Permanent Contraception In India, Neha Rani Bhardwaj

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Background: In 1951 India became the first country to launch a national family planning program focused on promoting reversible and permanent contraception including financial incentives for both method acceptors and providers. Despite governmental provision of the copper intrauterine device (IUD), oral contraceptive pills (OCP) and condoms at no cost, most Indian women choose permanent sterilization after completing childbearing. Whether the predominance of sterilization stemmed from Indian men and women’s desire for permanent contraception, from deficient knowledge and access to reversible methods, from public health messages and established norms, or from coercion in the form of incentives is unknown. Objectives: The …

Decolonizing The Body: Breast Cancer And The Environment In Toxic Times, Cynthia L. Martin Jul 2016

Decolonizing The Body: Breast Cancer And The Environment In Toxic Times, Cynthia L. Martin

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation explores cultural narratives regarding the relationship between environmental toxins and breast cancer causation. It is not an analysis of current scientific research; grounded in Foucault’s theory of genealogy and archaeology, it evaluates cultural narratives on breast cancer causation that may be subsumed by the mainstream focus upon a cure for breast cancer, overlooking how people with breast cancer perceive illness causation, particularly as it relates to toxic exposure. Theories of place, space, and the neoliberal politics behind biotechnology support understanding the toxification of the human body as neocolonialism, and invite decolonizing methodologies as a means of understanding and …

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study utilizes memoir, a qualitative research method, to tell how a Pueblo teacher's Pueblo cultural interactions with her students led to positive classroom behavior and achievement. It describes three diverse and separate sets my life experiences, in thematic chapters, that took place. I describe my Pueblo traditional upbringing and interactions with family and community wherein I spoke only the Keres language. Then, I describe my first encounter with White people who introduced me to the foreign language of English and another world, through comic books and a Hershey bar. I was introduced into American schooling where negative experiences with …

Global, Rural, & Cultural Health Book Series

When our early UNM College of Nursing PhD students wrote Volumes 1-3 of this compilation a decade ago, our program was new and growing, and most of the students lived here in New Mexico or in neighboring states. Much has changed since the initial volumes emerged from our course entitled Rural and Cultural Health (Nursing 611), a graduate elective. The world has embraced enormous linkages through technology. Refugee and migration patterns the world over have more people displaced and seeking a permanent home than ever before. International, national, regional and local contexts, conflicts, politics, health-related policies, economic struggles, racial/ethnic diversity, …

User Experiences Of Regret While Engaging With Social Media, Kimberly Oostman

Communication ETDs

Social media offers users the ability to participate with a social network of others in a process of sharing and fellowship, presenting an impression of self and the ability to monitor constructed expressions. Recent studies examining the ritual view of communication, impression management, self-regulation, and self-reflective capabilities show each of these plays a role when using certain social media sites. However, a research gap exists regarding the use of any social media and the perspectives of young adult users during the scenario of experiencing regret as the result of engaging with social media. The study is a mixed-methods exploratory study …
