Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses And The Impact On Patient Satisfaction, Maribeth Thornton Apr 2017

Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses And The Impact On Patient Satisfaction, Maribeth Thornton

Nursing ETDs

Compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction are two inter-related concepts. Individuals in helping professions may occasionally face compassion fatigue from giving so much of themselves to others. Compassion fatigue has been studied in a variety of settings: medical, social work, nursing, law enforcement, and fire departments, to name a few. While some researchers have studied nurses, little published work has focused exclusively on nurses who care for specialty pediatric populations. Additionally, there is scant research on whether compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue are associated with patient satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of compassion satisfaction and …

Social Risks As Costly Trait Signals, Ruth E. Sarafin Apr 2017

Social Risks As Costly Trait Signals, Ruth E. Sarafin

Psychology ETDs

Costly signaling theory posits that people will sometimes engage in seemingly irrational behavior to show off attractive qualities about themselves. These behaviors may end in or incur a cost to the actor such that only individuals who are highly fit are able to succeed at the behavior, and therefore behavior success is an honest signal of fitness. Previous research has used costly signaling to explain human physical risk taking behaviors such as rock climbing, but the current study seeks to apply them to social risk taking, such as raising one’s hand in class. Should social risk taking prove to be …

Hyperemesis Gravidarum And The Oral Cavity, Jamie A. Pena

Dental Hygiene ETDs

Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), a condition of extreme nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, can significantly impact the oral cavity in numerous ways both during and after HG pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of oral and dental related issues pertaining to Hyperemesis gravidarum as well as to uncover common oral and dental complications associated with the condition. This effort was made to provide dental hygienists and professionals with a thorough understanding of HG and its various effects on the oral cavity in order that patients of this population may be sufficiently recognized and served. Matters were …

A Historical Look At New Mexico’S Public Health, Laura J. Hall

Posters and Presentations

The poster A Historical Look at New Mexico’s Public Health, presented by Laura J. Hall, MFA, at the New Mexico Public Health Association Annual Meeting, April 5-6, 2017, examined the evolution of public health in New Mexico from statehood in 1912 to the mid-20th century. The poster highlighted key public health milestones, such as the establishment of the New Mexico Public Health Association in 1917, efforts to improve sanitation and healthcare access, and significant reductions in communicable diseases and mortality rates. It emphasized how public health initiatives contributed to longer, healthier lives for New Mexicans.

Rethinking Water Governance: Moving Beyond Water-Centric Perspectives In A Connected And Changing World, Rob C. De Loë, James J. Patterson Mar 2017

Rethinking Water Governance: Moving Beyond Water-Centric Perspectives In A Connected And Changing World, Rob C. De Loë, James J. Patterson

Natural Resources Journal

From the “water-centric” perspective that is common within the world’s large and diverse water community, water is of central importance, and improving water governance is self-evidently essential. Some water problems can be addressed using watercentric approaches such as watershed management. Unfortunately, evidence is mounting that suggests that many other water problems cannot because their causes and drivers, at scales from local to global, are partly or wholly external to those traditionally considered within the water sector. Water governance in these cases needs to better account for a range of external connections that strongly influence water-related outcomes of concern and contribute …

Performance-Enhancing Drugs: A Review, G Keith Gill Jan 2017

Performance-Enhancing Drugs: A Review, G Keith Gill

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Performance-enhancing drugs and substances have been an integral part of athletics and society. The immense popularity and financial compensation associated with success in sports often results in a desire to win at all costs, which stimulates a never-ending appetite for use of ergogenic aids. Athletes have experimented with these substances (ranging from over-the-counter supplements to anabolic-androgenic steroids and beyond) if a possibility of advantage exists, whether scientifically or theoretically supported. As the technology to create new designer drugs becomes more available, the ability to test for the presence of these substances lags slightly behind. The knowledge base of sports-medicine physicians …

Hierarchical Modeling Versus Regression Analysis For Evaluating Results Of Orthopaedic Studies That Use The National Inpatient Sample, Joshua W. Hustedt, Kade Mcquivey, John C. Hustedt

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Background: Owing to its hierarchical sampling structure, the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) often involves clusters of study data. We aimed to (1) understand the statistical methods of currently published orthopaedic studies using NIS and (2) examine the role of hierarchical modeling versus traditional regression analysis in a retrospective cohort of patients from NIS.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review to examine statistical methods of orthopaedic studies (published between 2005 and 2014) using NIS. Ultimately, 132 studies were identified. We noted percentages of studies that used hierarchical modeling versus traditional regression analysis. Using NIS, we identified a retrospective cohort of patients …
