A Sociological Analysis Of The Cultural Competence Construct: Essays On The Conceptualization, Operationalization, And Implementation Of Cultural Competence In The U.S. Medical Profession, Cirila Estela Vasquez Guzman

Sociology ETDs

PURPOSE: At the turn of the 21st century, the concept of cultural competence in medicine became a strategy to address cultural diversity and widening health and healthcare inequities. Cultural competence combines the tenets of patient-centered care, with an emphasis on the social and cultural factors that affect the quality of medical services, treatment decisions, and health outcomes. Substantively, this dissertation answers core questions about the parameters of cultural competence in medicine. Theoretically, it considers the jurisdictional terrain of the medical profession and its changing nature concerning the adoption of cultural competence. The overarching research question is how, why, and …

Seeking An Operational Definition Of Dieting: A Daily Diary Study, Elizabeth Anne Mclaughlin Jul 2017

Seeking An Operational Definition Of Dieting: A Daily Diary Study, Elizabeth Anne Mclaughlin

Psychology ETDs

Dieting is commonly considered a weight loss technique, but research consistently shows that it does not result in weight loss. Thirty to fifty percent of women report that they are dieting at any given time, typically by responding to a single “yes/no” item asking whether they are dieting. To explain why dieting may not result in weight loss, a detailed picture was needed as to people’s behavior when they report that they are dieting, including weight loss strategies and dietary intake. Other constructs previously studied as similar to dieting were “watching what I eat” and “eating healthy.” More information was …

Invention, Integration, And Engagement With/In An Engineering Student Organization, Brian Hendrickson Jul 2017

Invention, Integration, And Engagement With/In An Engineering Student Organization, Brian Hendrickson

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation draws from a three-year study of writing and rhetorical engagement in an engineering student organization at a university in the southwestern United States. I describe how students in the organization use writing to undertake a water quality program in an indigenous territory in Bolivia. I describe the student organization as a boundary-zone activity between its parent organization, the college of engineering, and its community and non-governmental organization partners. I provide a narrative of the organization as a site of rhetorical engagement, from the beginnings of the water quality program in 2007, through a 2014 partnership with a capstone …

Diet Specialization Does Not Explain Occupancy Or Abundance In A Test Of The Resource Breadth Hypothesis In A Small Mammal Community, Deborah R. Boro Jul 2017

Diet Specialization Does Not Explain Occupancy Or Abundance In A Test Of The Resource Breadth Hypothesis In A Small Mammal Community, Deborah R. Boro

Biology ETDs

The abundance-occupancy relationship (AOR) is a recurrent pattern in ecology and biogeography, in which species with expansive distributions are locally common while those with restricted distributions are locally rare. Despite occurring across a wide variety of taxa and spatial scales, the mechanisms underlying AORs are not well understood. I tested two such mechanisms regarding dietary generalism in a guild of 8 small, herbivorous African mammals: (1) the degree to which diet was explained by food availability, and (2) population-level diet breadth. I expected that food availability would better predict diet for abundant, widespread species than rare, restricted species. Additionally, I …

Assessing The Utility Of Phenylene Ethynylenes Against Candida Species Pathogens, Rina Sylejmani Jul 2017

Assessing The Utility Of Phenylene Ethynylenes Against Candida Species Pathogens, Rina Sylejmani

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

Candida species are the cause of many bloodstream infections through contamination of indwelling medical devices. These infections account for a 40% mortality rate, posing a significant risk to immunocompromised patients. Traditional treatments against Candida infections include amphotericin B and various azole treatments. Unfortunately, these treatments are associated with high toxicity, and resistant strains have become more prevalent. As a new frontier, light-activated phenylene ethynylenes have shown promising biocidal activity against Gram-positive and -negative bacterial pathogens, as well as the environmental yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this thesis, we monitored the viability of Candida species after treatment with a cationic conjugated …

An Integrated Bioinformatic/Experimental Approach For Discovering Novel Type Ii Polyketides Encoded In Actinobacterial Genomes, Wubin Gao

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Discovery of new natural products (NPs) is critical both for diseases treatment and crops protection. Numerous NP biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) in sequenced microbial genomes allow identification of new NPs through genome mining. Developing an integrated bioinformatic/experimental approach for discovering novel type II polyketides (PK-IIs) facilitates investigation of this family of NPs in an efficient, systematic way. Here, we developed an approach to analyze ketosynthase α/β (KSα/β) gene sequences to predict PK-II core structures, allowing us to target novel PK-II BGCs either from isolated genomic DNA or genomes from the NCBI databank, and to isolate novel PK-IIs produced by these …

Digitized Archival Primary Sources In Stem: A Selected Webliography, Amy Jankowski

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Popular connotations of archives and special collections are most closely aligned with the arts and humanities fields, with history being the most seamless affiliation. However, archival documentation extends far beyond common disciplinary assumptions, with strong holdings relevant to the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, as well as medicine and other allied disciplines. These archival collections provide largely untapped educational, enrichment, and research opportunities for STEM students and researchers.

Given the profound influx of digitization during the last two decades, many archival primary source materials have been digitized and are now freely available online, with more assuredly in progress. …

Immunology Of The Gray Short-Tailed Opossum During Pregnancy And Prenatal Development, Victoria L. Hansen May 2017

Immunology Of The Gray Short-Tailed Opossum During Pregnancy And Prenatal Development, Victoria L. Hansen

Biology ETDs

Vertebrate species that bear live young have overcome the evolutionary challenge of maintaining both a functional adaptive immune system and viviparous life cycle. In normal pregnancy, viviparous mothers are able sustain and nourish a fetus that is genetically half non-self without mounting an immunological attack. In 1953 Sir Peter Medawar brought attention to the “enigma of the fetal graft” and immunologists have been puzzling out the intricacies of fetal tolerance ever since. Although viviparity has evolved in all jawed vertebrate lineages aside from Aves, the vast majority of reproductive immunology research has been limited to eutherian mammals. There are insights …

Studies On The Effect Of Glycolysis And Pi(3,5)P2 On V-Atpase Activity, Dennis Ralph Dominguez May 2017

Studies On The Effect Of Glycolysis And Pi(3,5)P2 On V-Atpase Activity, Dennis Ralph Dominguez

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

We studied two signals that regulate the yeast vacuolar proton pump, V-ATPase, glucose and PI(3,5)P2.  V-ATPase regulation by glucose is linked to the glycolytic enzyme PFK-1. Chapter one investigates the relationship between V-ATPase and glycolysis in cells overexpressing the PFK-1 subunit Pfk2p.  We measured: (i) PFK-1 activity to determine the effect on PFK-1 function; and (ii) NADH autofluorescence to determine the effect on glycolysis. PFK2 overexpression decreased PFK-1 catalytic activity. However, the NADH synthesis rate increased by 1.4 – 2.6-fold, suggesting that excess Pfk2p enhanced the apparent glycolytic capacity of the cells. Vacuolar acidification was measured after the glucose concentration …
