This document is a summary of the Western Nevada Health Delivery Study. The geographic area addressed by this study is known as the Schurz Service Unit of the Phoenix Area Indian Health Service (IHS). The target population (12 Tribes) consists of the Indians residing within this area. Three main purposes of this study were to: 1) assess the total health care needs of the Indians in western Nevada; 2) set area-wide goals aimed at satisfying those needs; and 3) develop a phased strategy for moving from the present situation to the desired improvements. This is the final report from the Navajo Area Indian Health Service (IHS) on mortality patterns and hospitalized morbidity on the Navajo Indian Reservation. The primary purpose of the study was to document changing causal patterns of morbidity and mortality of the Navajo in order to apprise the IHS of the types of services that are currently most needed, and of needs which may be projected in the near future. The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate projects and programs that will assist the Indian Health Service (IHS) and Tribes in improving communication and administration of programs provided by both groups. This includes factors such as who should provide the services, what services should be provided, and how they should be provided. The scope of this program was the Billings Area Office, which is comprised of seven Indian Health Boards. A unit by unit evaluation of the costs and services provided, was performed in a managerial manner. Input from each of the seven Tribal boards was presented in …

Study Of The Relationship Between Maternal Nutrition And Neonatal Iron Status Using The Rat As An Animal Model, Sunil G. Anaokar

This study was designed to develop an animal model, using rats, to study the relationship between the iron concentration of maternal diet during lactation and maternal iron status, the effect of iron and ascorbic acid supplements on the iron content of maternal milk and the relationship between the iron content of maternal milk and neonatal iron status.
Forty pregnant and thirteen non-pregnant female albino rats were obtained at the age of 77 days, and fed a control diet containing 250 ppm iron as ferrous sulfate.

Unequal Sex Ratios In An Unhunted Mule Deer Population In New Mexico, Pamela Cotton

The adult sex ratio and the sex ratio at birth was determined for the unhunted mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) population occupying the riverbed area of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, Socorro County, New Mexico. The adult sex ratio was computed as the number of yearling and adult males per number of yearling and adult females observed within the effective area of seven linear one-mile transects established on the study area in accordance with the Stake Estimator Technique (Evans 1975). The ratio of 586 males:501 females (117:100) was significantly different from a 50:50 ratio. No evidence was found for …
