When Arsenic Is Safer In Your Cup Of Tea Than In Your Local Water Treatment Plant, Sue E. Umshler

Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)

The arsenic drinking water standard has been an issue for over fifty years and a hot debate topic since 1977. The Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1996 require the Environmental Protection Agency to promulgate a proposed regulation by January 1, 2000 and a final National Primary Drinking Water Regulation by January 2, 2001. This paper examines the health benefit and cost issues for various Maximum Contaminant Levels of arsenic exposure and examines some of the social and environmental consequences of setting the standard too low. The author proposes three alternatives for the proposed rule and concludes that the present …

Is It Evolution Yet? A Critique Of Evolutionary Archaeology, James L. Boone, Eric Alden Smith Jun 1998

Is It Evolution Yet? A Critique Of Evolutionary Archaeology, James L. Boone, Eric Alden Smith

Anthropology Faculty & Staff Publications

The application of Darwinian evolutionary theory to archaeology has taken two divergent and rather distinct paths over the past two decades. According to one program, often referred to as evolutionary archaeology, cultural change as seen in the archaeological record can best be explained in terms of the direct action of natural selection and other Darwinian processes on heritable variation in artifacts and behavior. The other approach, referred to as evolutionary or behavioral ecology, explains cultural and behavioral change as forms of phenotypic adaptation to varying social and ecological conditions, using the assumption that natural selection has designed organisms to respond …

Civil Commitment Of Pregnant Women As A Means Of Protecting Fetuses From Maternal Drug And Alcohol Abuse, Dana S. Hardy Jun 1998

Civil Commitment Of Pregnant Women As A Means Of Protecting Fetuses From Maternal Drug And Alcohol Abuse, Dana S. Hardy

Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)

During recent years, courts and legislatures have expanded the legal rights of fetuses, which historically were treated as part of the woman carrying them. This expansion of fetal rights has often resulted in conflict between the rights of the fetus and the rights of the woman carrying it. While concern for the health of fetuses is important to the health of our society, the maternal-fetal conflict is often unnecessary, as the health interests of fetuses could be more effectively promoted in ways that would not conflict with the interests of the mother. In this paper I will specifically address whether …

Grandmothering, Menopause, And The Evolution Of Human Life Histories, K. Hawkes, J.F. O'Connell, N.G. Blurton Jones, H. Alvarez, Eric Charnov Feb 1998

Grandmothering, Menopause, And The Evolution Of Human Life Histories, K. Hawkes, J.F. O'Connell, N.G. Blurton Jones, H. Alvarez, Eric Charnov

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Long postmenopausal lifespans distinguish humans from all other primates. This pattern may have evolved with mother—child food sharing, a practice that allowed aging females to enhance their daughters fertility, thereby increasing selection against senescence. Combined with Charnov's dimensionless assembly rules for mammalian life histories, this hypothesis also accounts for our late maturity, small size at weaning, and high fertility. It has implications for past human habitat choice and social organization and for ideas about the importance of extended learning and paternal provisioning in human evolution.
