Synchronous Generation And Coherent Control Of Extreme Wavelength Radiation And Ultrafast Spectroscopy, Aram Gragossian
Synchronous Generation And Coherent Control Of Extreme Wavelength Radiation And Ultrafast Spectroscopy, Aram Gragossian
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
Recent progress in ultrafast laser science has made it possible to synthesize and control complex electromagnetic waveforms down to sub-femtosecond timescales. These tailored ultrashort laser pulses can generate coherent bursts of electromagnetic radiation in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and terahertz spectral regions with durations reaching the attosecond regime in the XUV region. This is accomplished by coherently controlling electronic motion in gas plasma targets. With these novel radiation sources, ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy can be performed on a large variety of materials. Knowledge of the spectral phase of an ultrashort pulse is crucial for many applications. There are a variety of …

The Power Of Community Action:Anti‐Payday Loan Ordinances In Three Metropolitan Areas, Nathalie Martin, Robert N. Mayer, Steve Graves
Faculty Scholarship
Local ordinances that restrict payday lending constitute an important strategy in the overall attack on this problematic form of lending. In this report, made possible by the generous support of Silicon Valley Community Foundation, we describe and analyze campaigns in three locales that differ markedly in the opportunities and challenges faced by ordinance advocates. The locales are Santa Clara and San Mateo counties in California (“Silicon Valley”); Dallas, Denton, and Tarrant counties in Texas; and Salt Lake County in Utah. This report finds both commonalities and important variations among these campaigns. While there is no single recipe for a successful …

Role Of Nuclear Pharmacist In Clinical Translation Of Positron Emission Tomography (Pet) Radiopharmaceuticals And Environmental Monitoring Of Facility, Reiko Oyama
Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs
There have been many changes in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging field as several radiopharmaceuticals have recently been approved and many others on the horizon. Ensuring the compliance with the increasingly aggressive national, federal, and state regulatory has become a critical piece of PET manufacturing and Nuclear Pharmacy.
As a nuclear pharmacist, I have been searching for the way I can better contribute to the progress of this field with an ultimate goal of proving safe and effective healthcare to the patients. In order to do so, strengthening my expertise is essential. In this thesis, I would like to capture …

New Strategies For Reducing Transportation Emissions And Preparing For Climate Impacts, Gabriel Pacyniak, Kathryn Zyla, Vicki Arroyo
New Strategies For Reducing Transportation Emissions And Preparing For Climate Impacts, Gabriel Pacyniak, Kathryn Zyla, Vicki Arroyo
Faculty Scholarship
The transportation sector is becoming the largest source of greenhouse gas ("GHG") emissions in the United States. The Obama Administration put in place federal vehicle and fuel standards that are significantly reducing emissions. However, these regulations will be insufficient to put the United States on track to achieve needed reductions needed long-term. This is especially true if the 2025 standards announced by the Obama Administration are rolled back by the new Trump Administration. Because current federal standards alone will not attain ambitious climate goals and may be rolled back, state and local activity is essential to make progress towards meeting …
Reviewing Reservoir Operations: Can Federal Water Projects Adapt To Change?, Reed D. Benson
Reviewing Reservoir Operations: Can Federal Water Projects Adapt To Change?, Reed D. Benson
Faculty Scholarship
This Article begins by reviewing the purposes for federal water projects, and identifies some of the trade-offs involved in operating projects for certain purposes. It then addresses the legal factors that determine or influence project operations, beginning with project authorizing statutes and ending with federal environmental laws. The Article examines Corps and Bureau policies regarding project operating plans, the reasons for agency reluctance to review and revise their plans, and some of the factors that prompt the agencies to proceed with reviews. It then summarizes periodic review requirements in two analogous contexts—federal land management plans, and hydropower project licenses—and considers …
The Prisonization Of America's Public Schools, Maryam Ahranjani
The Prisonization Of America's Public Schools, Maryam Ahranjani
Faculty Scholarship
Over the past generation, episodes of mass school violence in American public schools have led to the “prisonization” of schools. The problems associated with prisonization practices have been identified and well-documented in the legal literature over the past few years, and they include the school-to-prison pipeline, as well as the over-policing of vulnerable populations like students with disabilities and African-American and Latino children. This piece seeks to contribute to existing literature in two ways. While national attention has turned to the lack of rigorous research on the effectiveness of prisonization practices, and studies are underway to identify whether prisonization practices …

The Effect Of School Construction On Educational Outcomes Among Females: Evidence From Nepal, Animesh Giri, Vinish Shrestha
The Effect Of School Construction On Educational Outcomes Among Females: Evidence From Nepal, Animesh Giri, Vinish Shrestha
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
We estimate the impact of increases in schools constructed from 1985 to 1995 on girls educational outcomes in Nepal. We use a difference-in-differences framework by combining the across-district differences in the number of new schools with variation in exposure to these schools created by the virtue of individuals being of school-going-age during the school construction period. Our results indicate that the construction of an additional school (per 1,000 square kilometers) increased the probability to read and write among females by 1.5 percentage points and increased their highest level of schooling attained by 0.12 units but did not affect basic literacy …
