Practical Considerations In Determining Timber Pile Depth Using The Sonic Echo Method, Ali F. Jwary
Practical Considerations In Determining Timber Pile Depth Using The Sonic Echo Method, Ali F. Jwary
Civil Engineering ETDs
The Federal Highway Administration indicates that about 85,000 bridges in the United States have no original contract documents with information about the type, depth, geometry and material of their foundations (FHWA, 2010). Furthermore, the National Bridge Inventory (NBI) provides information about 86,133 bridges nationwide that are rated as scour critical because of unknown foundation condition. In New Mexico, there are more than 281 bridges with unknown foundations, which are owned by the New Mexico Department of Transportation; 71 of these are timber bridges. These data indicate a serious problem that needs decisive action to assess the unknown bridge foundation characteristics …

From Me to You
This guide focuses on the places from which news is reported — by the letters. Activities and illustrations urge writing the first thank you notes and other letters of appreciation. “Ageless love letters” give an example of how media can use letters on special dates and holidays. This article and the Dodson letter can also be used to discuss how historians and social scientists can use letters to understand the social mores, illnesses and associations of time periods.

The Political Cultures Of Irrigation And The Proxy Battles Of Interstate Water Litigation, Burke W. Griggs
The Political Cultures Of Irrigation And The Proxy Battles Of Interstate Water Litigation, Burke W. Griggs
Natural Resources Journal
Groundwater depletion ignores the political boundaries of western states, the legal boundaries of western water codes, and the jurisdictional boundaries of western water federalism. In the wake of the groundwater revolution, it is becoming apparent that certain interstate lawsuits derive essentially from deeper conflicts rooted in the clash between surface-water and groundwater irrigation communities—and their respective political cultures. The interstate divide may be yielding to the hydrological divide. This article attends to that deeper relationship between irrigation agriculture and political culture across the Great Plains. Part I provides a brief history of its surface-water irrigation communities, to compose a recognizable …
Valuing Sacred Tribal Waters Within Prior Appropriation, Michelle Bryan
Valuing Sacred Tribal Waters Within Prior Appropriation, Michelle Bryan
Natural Resources Journal
Throughout the world water plays a central role in the spirituality of indigenous peoples. Focusing on the American West, this article first describes how tribal water needs touch upon the sacred and then explains how both federal law and state prior appropriation doctrine fail to adequately protect these important sacred views of water. Pivoting away from the classic federal law arguments, the article then advocates for an evolution in state water law regimes to provide yet unrecognized protections for tribal sacred waters. Because international law plays an increasing role in this issue, the article also explores case studies from Ireland, …

Intelligent Roic For Real-Time In-Pixel Image Processing, Mohammad J. Ghasemibenhangi
Intelligent Roic For Real-Time In-Pixel Image Processing, Mohammad J. Ghasemibenhangi
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
As the resolution of current image sensors is increasing and the readout electronics is getting faster, the amount of data produced by these imagers is becoming excessively large to store, transmit, and analyze. As a result, sparse data representation has become an interesting research topic in the last few years. Human eye contains millions of photoreceptors, however, only some sparse data is transmitted to the optic nerves. Image processing techniques implemented on a chip and at the pixel level is the main building blocks for retina-like sensors. In this way, instead of transmitting raw images that require massive storage, and …

Teaching With The Framework: A Cephalonian Approach, David A. Hurley, Robin Potter
Teaching With The Framework: A Cephalonian Approach, David A. Hurley, Robin Potter
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Purpose
This paper aims to provide academic instruction librarians with a model for integrating concepts from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Framework into “one-shot” library instruction sessions without losing the practical experience of searching the library resources.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors adapted the Cephalonian method as the structure of first-year library instruction sessions for an English composition class. The sessions were re-designed to emphasize the core concepts of information literacy while incorporating active learning activities and discussion.
Findings
The authors found the Cephalonian method to be a useful structure for incorporating aspects of the ACRL Framework into the …

From Acoustic Analog Of Space, Cancer Therapy, To Acoustic Sachs-Wolfe Theorem: A Model Of The Universe As A Guitar, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache, Yunita Umniyati
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
It has been known for long time that the cosmic sound wave was there since the early epoch of the Universe. Signatures of its existence are abound. However, such an acoustic model of cosmology is rarely developed fully into a complete framework from the notion of space, cancer therapy up to the sky. This paper may be the first attempt towards such a complete description of the Universe based on classical wave equation of sound. It is argued that one can arrive at a consistent description of space, elementary particles, Sachs-Wolfe acoustic theorem, up to a novel approach for cancer …
