Annual Report Of The University, 1966-1967, University Of New Mexico
UNM Annual Reports
Among the most meaningful changes have been those occasioned by the student body. Foremost among influences upon the University has been the continuing rapid growth of the student population. In September, 1947, there were 4,495 students enrolled. That represented a gain approximately threefold over the last truly prewar academic year, 1940-41. But the 1947 enrollment was, in the thinking of the time, a rather artificial figure, for a large number of our students in that year were World War II veterans, going to college under provisions of the so-called GI Bill of Rights. Nevertheless, we were embarking on a period …

A Petrochemical Study Of Compositionally Zoned Ash-Flow Tuffs, David L. Giles
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Vertical compositional zoning occurs within the basal simple cooling units of two welded ash-flow tuff sheets, the Kneeling Nun and Caballo Blanco formations, in the Cobre Mountains of southwestern New Mexico. The sheets are on the southern edge of the Datil-Mogollon volcanic province. The Kneeling Nun (33.4 m.y.) varies abruptly but systematically upward from a modal quartz latite to latite, and the Caballo Blanco (29.8 m.y.) from a modal rhyolite to capping quartz latite. Both are crystal-rich, and in each the amount of ferromagnesian and plagioclase phenocrysts and phenocryst percent increases upward, while the quartz and alkali feldspar/plagioclase ratio decreases. …
Nuclear Quadrupole Relaxation., Derwin F. Brown
Nuclear Quadrupole Relaxation., Derwin F. Brown
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
A nucleus with an asymmetric charge distribution (an asymmetric arrangement of protons) exhibits a quadrupole moment which interacts with the gradient of the electric field of the surrounding electrons. The interaction energy is a function of the angle between the nuclear spin axis and the axis of the surrounding electric field. The nucleus processes about the electric field axis in quantized energy states. These quantized energy states correspond to a hyperfine splitting similar to the hyperfine structure of the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction between the nucleus and the electrons. The application of an external electric field, oscillating at the processional frequency …
An Introduction To The Fundamentals Of Radiation Transport Theory., William A. Proctor
An Introduction To The Fundamentals Of Radiation Transport Theory., William A. Proctor
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
I first became interested in radiation transport theory when, in August 1966, I was given primary responsibility for a large computer program which serves as a tool for solving high temperature, time dependent, radiation-hydrodynamics problems. Inquiries as to where to start learning about this subject invariably resulted in my being directed to the two books by Chandrasekhar (1957 and 1960) and the book by Kourganoff (1963). From the beginning of my study of these expositions, I found it rather curious that a theory which treated the radiation field as continuously distributed in space was formulated in a manner which appeared …
Generalized Transport Equations For Partially And Fully Ionized Nonequilibrium Gases., Dermod Kelleher
Generalized Transport Equations For Partially And Fully Ionized Nonequilibrium Gases., Dermod Kelleher
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
Transport equations are developed for the number densities, mean velocities, temperatures, stresses and heat fluxes of the constituents of an ionized gas by taking velocity moments of the Boltzmann equation. These equations are closed out by utilizing the Grad 13-moment approximation for each distribution function. This approximation provides a representation for the distribution function of each constituent which has as its first term a Maxwellian about the constituent mean velocity, and remaining terms which describe the deviation of the distribution function from this local constituent Maxwellian and which have as their coefficients the constituent traceless stress tensor and the constituent …

Measurements Of Solar X-Ray Emission From The Ions Carbon Vi And Nitrogen Vii, Winifred Doyle Evans
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Studies of the solar spectrum in the extreme ultraviolet and x-ray region have been possible since sounding rockets and satellites have been available to carry instruments above the earth's atmosphere. Progress was slow at first, but techniques have improved rapidly in recent years and a considerable body of experimental data has been accumulated since the first rocket flights in the late 1940’s.

Geology Of The Cerro Pelon-Arroyo De La Jara Area, Santa Fe County, New Mexico, Alvis Lee Lisenbee
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The Cerro Pelon-Arroyo de la Jara area is a north-northwesterly plunging syncline at the southern end of the Española basin. Exposed rock units consist of more than 5,000 feet of Mesozoic and Cenozoic shale and sandstone intruded by Oligocene diorite sills and andesite and latite dikes related to the Ortiz intrusive center to the west.
The syncline is affected by several fault systems with both normal and strike-slip movement represented. Northerly trending faults of the east limb combine with a monoclinal flexure to produce an over-all lowering of the section to the west. These faults appear to be related to …

A Stratigraphic Study Of The Navajo Sandstone, Navajo Mountain, Utah And Arizona, William O. Hatchell
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The Navajo Sandstone of the Triassic(?) and Jurassic age is approximately 1, 000 feet thick at Navajo Mountain, Utah, and is composed of sets of cliff-forming, highly cross-stratified sandstone and horizontally stratified limestone, siltstone, and sandstone. it is intertongued on a large scale with the underlying, fluvial Kayenta Formation of Triassic(?) age, and is comfortably overlain by the marine Carmel Formation of the Jurassic age.
In the highly cross-stratified Navajo, tabular-planner and wedge planner sets are more common than simple wedge sets, and persistent horizontal bedding and truncation planes distinguish individual sets. Ripple marks, a distinctive type of "graded bedding", …

The ommidirectional cosmic ray fluxes at an altitude of 300 miles and within ± 34 degrees latitude were studied using two Cerenkov counters and a scintillation counter aboard the 0S0-82 Satellite. The fluxes were found to depend strongly on the geomagnetic field with the trapped particles in the South Atlantic Radiation Anomaly being directional in some locations.
Step-Wise Variation Of Spectrometer Quench Rates For Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Measurements, Curtis M. Wise
Step-Wise Variation Of Spectrometer Quench Rates For Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Measurements, Curtis M. Wise
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
In nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) it is desirable to better examine the magnitude of the resonance signals. This thesis describes the construction and testing of spectrometer control circuits which enable one to better examine a single resonance signal to the near exclusion of extraneous resonance side band responses and circuit noise in the NQR detection apparatus. Added to the basic spectrometer circuit is a step-wise varying quench rate control. For each adjustment of this control other control units are activated to keep the chosen NQR signal fixed in position and in magnitude within the spectrometer's span of detected radio frequencies. …

Project Upward Bound was a program initiated by the Office of Economic Opportunity to wage war on talent waste in our high schools throughout the United States today. The program itself was really a pre-college program for low income youngsters. It was perhaps best summed up in the following quotations from Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, at the 1965 White House Conference on Education: "Millions of youngsters from impoverished backgrounds are caught in a downward spiral of second-rate education, functional illiteracy, delinquency, dependency and despair. How can we halt this tragic waste of human resources? How can we turn it …

²⁰⁷Pb (N, N') ²⁰⁷Pbm And ²⁰⁸Pb (N, 2n) ²⁰⁷Pbm Cross Sections, Edward Raymond Shunk
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
The cross sections for the production of the 207Pbm state from 207Pb(n, n') and 208Pb(n, 2n) have been measured from the threshold through 14 MeV by observing the 1 .064 MeV gamma ray in the decay of 207Pbm (T ½ = 0.818 ± 0.004 sec) with a 3 in. x 3 in. NaI (T1) detector. Separated lead isotopes were irradiated for 4 sec and pneumatically transported to the detector. A 400-channel analyzer a used a time analyzer to record counts from neutron monitor during the irradiation and from the detector after the irradiation. These …

Completion And Compactification Functors For Cauchy Spaces, James Francis Ramaley
Completion And Compactification Functors For Cauchy Spaces, James Francis Ramaley
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
The subject of this thesis is topological but the approach is categorical. We consider the approach as important as the subject itself and so we try to indicate whenever we have a categorically defined concept. In fact, we are led by this approach to make definitions and constructions so that certain relationships are categorical in nature. Our coreflective completion functor of Chapter IV is one example of this approach.
We wish here to give a brief outline of the historical development of convergence theory and how category theory has come to play a role in this development...

Convergence Relations On Universal Algebras., Allan Matlock Weber Carstens
Convergence Relations On Universal Algebras., Allan Matlock Weber Carstens
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In this paper we derive some first results on convergence algebras, which are universal algebras with a convergence structure. The first concept was defined some time ago and a unified study of it is available in [4]. Convergence functions were first defined in [7] and have been studied in further works by Kent and others. Kent also investigated the results of imposing a convergence structure on an algebraic structure, in the special case of convergence groups [8]. Our results on loops and quasigroups extend some of his.

Surface-Wave Phenomena At Liquid-Air Interfaces, Robert H. Dungan
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
The purpose of this investigation was to continue the study of surface wave phenomena initiated by Woodward and Bryant. [l], [2] Woodward, using an experimental arrangement similar to that shown in Fig. 3, observed that the intensity of light measured above, but parallel to, the reflected beam was a very sharp function of the incident beam angle at the critical angle. They also observed that the light intensity above the reflected beam decreased exponentially as the detector was moved away from the reflected beam in the plane of incidence. They reported characteristic lengths for the exponential decay constant of 9.6 …

A Best Running Test For Symmetry And Distribution Free Tests For Symmetry, David Lloyd Burdick
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
A sequential test of a statistical hypothesis H0 versus H1 is said to be a running test if there is a positive probability that the test will not stop if H0 is true. Tests of this nature were introduced for testing the Bernoulli case by D. A. Darling and Herbert Robbins [1]; an earlier paper of Roger Farrell [2] deals implicitly with the asymptotic expected sample size of such tests for testing the hypothesis Ѳ = 0 in the parameterized family of generalized density functions h(Ѳ)eϴxdµ.
