The Ideal And New Interval Topologies On Lattice Ordered Groups., Frieda Koster Holley

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In his 1967 edition of Lattice Theory, G. Birkhoff posed the question: "When is a directed group a topological group and a topological lattice in its new interval topology?'. This problem and the similar problem involving the ideal topology are investigated.

Technological In-Migration And Curricular Change: Educational Politics In Albuquerque, 1945-1965, William M. Hales Jr. Apr 1970

Technological In-Migration And Curricular Change: Educational Politics In Albuquerque, 1945-1965, William M. Hales Jr.

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Statement of problem. While the migration of the rural poor to the urban ghetto is an important and much-discussed demographic movement which has challenged the adaptiveness of the American public school, a less-noticed migration, spawned by the rapidly expanding technology, has been occurring. Defense industries, particularly those related to space exploration and atomic energy have developed new sites for expansion. This expansion has brought with it a steady flow of scientists and technicians into the new localities, placing great stress on local institutions, including the schools. This study investigated the impact of a large in-migration of scientists and technicians on …

A Study Of The Reduction Of Nickel Oxide Single Crystal By Hydrogen In A High Vacuum System., Jong In Joung Apr 1970

A Study Of The Reduction Of Nickel Oxide Single Crystal By Hydrogen In A High Vacuum System., Jong In Joung

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Wafers of well-characterized nickel oxide single crystal, with (110) faces, were etched in hydrochloric acid and reduced by hydrogen in a high vacuum system. Reduction took place at temperatures of 280-310°C and pressures of 1.0-1.3 torr. The reduced wafers were replicated by carbon film and the replicas were examined by an electron microscope.

A series of reduction patterns at various stages of surface change were obtained. After a period of incubation, hemispherical metallic nickel particles, about 400 A in diameter, appeared on the parent nickel oxide surface. The number of hemispheres increased but the size of the hemispheres did not …

Volcanic Rocks Associated With The Western Part Of The Mogollon Plateau Volcano-Tectonic Complex, Southwestern New Mexico, Rodney Charles Rhodes

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

An area of approximately 450 square miles was mapped on a reconnaissance basis, covering part of the western half of the Mogollon Plateau volcano-tectonic complex. This report deals with the geology of the area and its relationship to the regional volcano-tectonic structure of the Mogollon Plateau.

The Synthesis Of Some New Azabenzo[A]Pyrene And Monomethyl Azabenzo[A]Pyrene Derivatives, Richard E. Phillips Jan 1970

The Synthesis Of Some New Azabenzo[A]Pyrene And Monomethyl Azabenzo[A]Pyrene Derivatives, Richard E. Phillips

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The synthesis of six new azabenzo[a]pyrenes was undertaken in order that the carcinogenic and carcinostatic properties of these compounds might be tested. The compounds thus synthesized were 4-aza benzo[a]pyrene (1), 5-methyl-4-azabenzo[a]pyrene (2), 12-azabenzo[a]pyrene (3), 11-methyl-12-azabenzo [a]pyrene (4),5 -azabenzo [a]pyrene (5), and 4-methy1-5-azabenzo[a]pyrene (6).

Compounds 1 and 2 were prepared from the intermediate 4-keto-1,2,3,4-tctrahydrochrysene. The azine from this ketone was dehydrogenated and the resulting aromatic amine was both formylated and acetylated. The amides were cyclized with polyphosphoric acid in a Bischler-Napieralski cyclodchydration giving fair yields of 1 and 2. The synthesis of compounds 3 and 4 was carried out in a …

Paths Of Energy Degradation In Transition Metal Complexes, James N. Demas Jan 1970

Paths Of Energy Degradation In Transition Metal Complexes, James N. Demas

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

To elucidate the paths and rates of energy degradation in transition-metal complexes following photoexcitation, a comprehensive experimental study was carried out on a total of fourteen complexes of Ru(II), Os(II), Ir(III), and Rh(III). Photoluminescence lifetimes, spectra, wavelength dependences of the quantum yields, and absolute quantum yields were determined. The complexes all contained organic ligands—pyridine, 2, 2’bypyridine, 2, 2’ 2”-terpyridine, and 1, 10-phenanthroline. The ruthenium, osmium, and iridium complexes all exhibited charge transfer (CT) phosphorescences with quantum yields of 1-60% and lifetimes of 0.6-11 µsec in an alcoholic glass at 77°K. The rhodium complexes gave d-d* phosphorescences with yields in the …

Measurement Of Cyclohexane Ultrasonic Velocity Using Photon-Phonon Scattering Interactions, Edward W. Taylor Jr. Jan 1970

Measurement Of Cyclohexane Ultrasonic Velocity Using Photon-Phonon Scattering Interactions, Edward W. Taylor Jr.

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The construction of a frequency modulated optic cell and its operation for studying the ultrasonic velocities of cyclohexane, acetone and ethyl alcohol as a function of temperature is described. A description of photon-phonon scattering interactions is presented. The appearance of the intensity distribution of the scattered light is treated, and an analysis of the experimental results is included. The special scattering case of Bragg diffraction of coherent light was used for determining the ultrasonic velocities of cyclohexane as a function of temperature. Ramifications of the Raman-Nath and Bragg diffraction effects are discussed. The relationship vT = 1376.78 - 5.25 …
