Molecular Orbital Calculations To Determine Stable Conformations Of The Nucleotide Deoxycytidine-3'-Monophosphate., Marvin Lawrence Chatkoff Jul 1970

Molecular Orbital Calculations To Determine Stable Conformations Of The Nucleotide Deoxycytidine-3'-Monophosphate., Marvin Lawrence Chatkoff

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Extended Huckel, semi-empirical, molecular orbital analyses were performed for deoxycytidine-31 -monophosphate and cytidine-3'-monoohosphate corresponding to single nucleotides of double helical DNA and RNA to determine whether the experimentally derived models correspond to theoretically stable configurations. The A, B, and C models of DNA, and linearly interpolated intermediate configurations were investigated. For RNA, the experimental A configuration, a pseudo RNA nucleotide formed from the B configuration of DNA, and intermediate conformations were used.

From the B model of DNA the base was displaced and angles adjusted until close coordinate fits were obtained at the A and C configurations. Intermediate points were …

A Spectroscopic Investigation Of Electron Transfer Transitions In Osmium (Ii) Complexes, Brian J. Pankuch Jun 1970

A Spectroscopic Investigation Of Electron Transfer Transitions In Osmium (Ii) Complexes, Brian J. Pankuch

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Osmium (II) complexes containing organic coordinating ligands 2.2'-bipyridine, 1.10-phenanthroline, 2.2' .2"terpyridine were studied spectroscopically. Syntheses were carried out by published methods, and each complex was checked by chemical analysis and thin layer chromatography. The complexes were shown to be d6 strong field systems by magnetic susceptibility measurements performed at room temperature in air.

Room temperature absorption spectra in the visible and near-ultraviolet were measured in solvents of different polarities (H2O, MeOH, CH3CN, DMF, CHCl3) and solvent shifts of the band maxima of 0.3 to 3 kK were found. Low temperature (approximately 82-90°K) absorption spectra …

Federal Personnel Reduction-In-Force Procedures:An Algorithm For Use By Science Administrators., James S. Patterson Jun 1970

Federal Personnel Reduction-In-Force Procedures:An Algorithm For Use By Science Administrators., James S. Patterson

Public Administration ETDs

The thesis focuses on the processes used by the Federal Government to effect reduction in force among employees in the competitive service. The reduction in force process, in general, determines which employees will be retained in their current jobs, which employees will displace others, and which employees must be released when a work force is reduced. Three major topics are presented: background, the algorithm and rationale, and critique.

The background is a historical survey of retention and removal considerations used in the federal Government since 1789. Histories and documents of the personnel and civil service literature were examined for information …

Molecular Luminescence From Turhenium, Osmium, And Terbium Chelates: 2°K To 300°K, Raymond William Harrigan May 1970

Molecular Luminescence From Turhenium, Osmium, And Terbium Chelates: 2°K To 300°K, Raymond William Harrigan

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Two experimental spectroscopic investigations spanning the temperature range 300°K to 2°K were carried out on molecular complexes. The nature of charge-transfer phenomena in transition-metal chelates was studied extensively, and the thermal quenching of the luminescence of terbium (III) chelates was briefly investigated. The experimental methods employed were absorption and luminescence spectroscopy including photoflash excitation for studying transient luminescence decays. Measurements were performed on three osmium and three ruthenium complexes, all containing bidentate or tridentate heterocyclic aromatics as ligands. The compounds were studied in rigid solvent glasses, in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMM), in an isomorphic host of tris(2, 2'-bipyridine)zinc(II) sulfate, and in …

The Personnel Assignment Problem:A Specific Application To The Assignment Of Scientific And Engineering Officers In The United States Air Force, James E. Bickel May 1970

The Personnel Assignment Problem:A Specific Application To The Assignment Of Scientific And Engineering Officers In The United States Air Force, James E. Bickel

Public Administration ETDs

In its most familiar application, the personnel assignment problem asks for the optimum assignment of a group of persons to a group of positions, where the possible assignments are ranked by the ratings of the individuals in each of the available positions. This study considers the assignment problem, in general, with a specific application directed at the assignment of scientific and engineering officers in the United States Air Force. By selecting such a specific group, the methodology by which personnel can be optimally assigned was developed. It is the intent of this approach to provide the foundation on which such …

Crystal size measurements and crystal shapes were noted for gypsum within the range of supersaturations studied (45.6 to 131). The maximum crystal size is attained at a slightly lower supersaturation than the critical supersaturation. The shape …

Transitive Subgraphs Of Undirected And Directed Graphs., Charles C. Harner May 1970

Transitive Subgraphs Of Undirected And Directed Graphs., Charles C. Harner

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

A graph G is transitive if it is transitive when considered as a relation; i.e., if the edges ab and be are in G, so is ac. In this paper, several natural questions concerning transitivity and related concepts are investigated.

Because the terminology and notation of graph theory is not standard, a brief section of definitions and notation is included in Section II. Section III is a study of the transitive cut number of a graph, the minimum number of edges which must be removed from the graph so that the remaining subgraph is transitive. Undirected graphs on n points …

Prompt Neutron Decay Constants In A Reflected Fast Burst Reactor, Charles Clayton Price May 1970

Prompt Neutron Decay Constants In A Reflected Fast Burst Reactor, Charles Clayton Price

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

A mathematical model describing the kinetic response of a reflected fast burst reactor is developed using point reactor theory. The equations of the model are used to derive a reflected inhour relationship and a two region Rossi-alpha equation.

The model is investigated for three reactor-reflector configurations; the bare reactor, the reactor with a radially symmetric steel reflector, and a reactor with a radially symmetric polyethylene reflector. This investigation includes the results of a calculational study using Monte-Carlo techniques and an experimental program using Rossi-alpha, pulsed neutron, and reactor burst techniques on the Sandia Pulsed Reactor SPR II.

Vacuum Deposition Of Thin Films Of Ultra-High Thickness Uniformity On Conical Substrates Having Extreme Curvature, Richard Bechtel May 1970

Vacuum Deposition Of Thin Films Of Ultra-High Thickness Uniformity On Conical Substrates Having Extreme Curvature, Richard Bechtel

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

For many industrial and analytical applications of thin films it is very essential to have a uniform thickness of the deposit. In response to this need, various techniques have been devised that are capable of providing the required uniformity on planar and slightly-curved spherical substrates. However, when a severe curvature (such as that encountered with some conical substrates) is introduced, the deposit uniformity that is obtainable with present techniques becomes quite poor. Thus, the need exists for new technology in this respect. Theoretical consideration is given to the problem of obtaining an ultra-uniform thin film coating on conical substrates. The …

Propagation Of Ultrasound In Plastic Crystals, Carl E. Scheie May 1970

Propagation Of Ultrasound In Plastic Crystals, Carl E. Scheie

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The study of the organic solid state, and in particular of plastic crystals, is a relatively new branch of physics (1,2). Timmermans first surmised the existence of these solids from the anomalous values of the entropies of fusion. The solids possess many of the characteristics of liquids. They are easily deformed by pressure and they show dielectric properties that can be described on the basis of rotation of the molecules in their lattice positions. Still they have a definite crystal structure. Thus, even though the molecules are not symmetric, they appear to be to some degree because of the rotation. …

Trace-Element Geochemistry Of Southwestern Turquoise, Anne Marguerite Colberg Sigleo May 1970

Trace-Element Geochemistry Of Southwestern Turquoise, Anne Marguerite Colberg Sigleo

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Southwestern turquoise (CuAl6(PO4)4 OH8 · 4H2O) is associated with Laramide intrusions along the eastern and southern margins of the Colorado Plateau in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, and with a zone of Late DevonianMississippian tectonic activity in Nevada. A review, of the previous work on the origin of turquoise is presented. Of these, the supergene hypothesis proposed by Sidney Paige in 1912 generally remains undisputed in the literature. Much of the data presented in this study, however, suggest a hydrothermal mode of formation. The concentrations of Co in particular are most similar …
