On The Non-Creole Basis For Afro-Caribbean Spanish, John M. Lipski Feb 1993

On The Non-Creole Basis For Afro-Caribbean Spanish, John M. Lipski

Research Papers

The claim has frequently been made by scholars that Africans in the Spanish Caribbean, deprived of the opportunity for learning the prevailing dialects of Spanish, developed a Spanish-based creole. The most ambitious theories assert that this Afro-Hispanic language permanently affected other varieties of Caribbean Spanish. An accompanying claim is that the postulated creole was built upon an earlier Afro-Portuguese trade jargon, pidgin, or even fully nativized creole, originally formed on the coast of Africa, and learned in the African slaving stations and on slave ships crossing the Atlantic. The present study injects a note of caution, after considering a wider …

Supplementing The Binding Theory: On The Question Of Proper Binding, Hector A. Torres Jan 1993

Supplementing The Binding Theory: On The Question Of Proper Binding, Hector A. Torres

English Language and Literature Faculty Publications

In this essay I want to propose that the phenomenon of proper binding is relevant to the theory of grammar and suggest that, if allowed to play a part in the writing of a generative grammar, proper binding can serve as an interface between the form of the grammar and its use in discourse pragmatics. With the term proper binding I refer to the prescriptive and descriptive statement requiring that anaphor and bound pronouns agree with their antecedents with respect to person, number, gender. In this vein, proper binding relates to the theory of grammar in the same way that …

Laws Of Internal Composition. Poems With… Problems!, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

For me, Florentin Smarandache’s appearance in the Romanian literature – I tell this from the beginning and with all my conviction –, is worth a real event. […] Not his character’s exoticism is interesting, nor his fabulous and dangerous “diligence,” but the excellent value of his unusual struggle-in-unknown that is becoming an Oeuvre.

Volume translated by the author to English from his 1982 Romanian book "Legi de Compozitie interna. Poeme cu... Probleme!"

Head Water: An Interview With Gerald Vizenor, Gerald Vizenor, Larry Mccaffery, Tom Marshall

American Studies Faculty and Staff Publications

As Gerald Vizenor explains in the following interview, the act of going away has allowed him to return home richer as an individual and as a writer. Asia has been especially important in this regard: it was in Japan just after the Korean War that Vizenor experienced his first major literary discovery--haiku. Then, over twenty years later, after having published numerous books of poetry (including several books of haiku) and journalism, a year teaching in Tianjin, China resulted in Vizenor 's second novel, Griever: An American Monkey King in China. We talked with Gerald Vizenor in his office at UC-Berkeley …

Manifest Manners: The Long Gaze Of Christopher Columbus, Gerald Vizenor Oct 1992

Manifest Manners: The Long Gaze Of Christopher Columbus, Gerald Vizenor

American Studies Faculty and Staff Publications

Christopher Columbus was denied beatification because of his avarice, baseness, and malevolent discoveries. He landed much lower in tribal stories and remembrance than he has in foundational histories and representations of colonialism; nonetheless, several centuries later his mistaken missions were uncovered anew and commemorated as entitlements in a constitutional democracy.

Toward A More Adequate Characterization Of The Chicano Language Setting, Santa Ana A. Otto Sep 1992

Toward A More Adequate Characterization Of The Chicano Language Setting, Santa Ana A. Otto

SHRI Publications

Although several typologies of the linguistic varieties of language varieties heard in the speech of Chicanos have been proposed, many disagreements about the assumptions underlying such typologies remain, in particular, concerning the nature of Chicano English. These disagreements have a direct, detrimental effect on the assessment and education of Chicano children, and by extension, all language minority children. Critical commentary on certain of these disagreements is presented in this paper. A unitary model of the language varieties used by Chicanos which goes beyond recent typologies is proposed, made on the basis of explicit assumptions about the sociolinguistic nature of language …

Accent Penalties And The Earnings Of Mexican American Men, Alberto Davila, Alok K. Bohara, Rogelio Saenz Jul 1991

Accent Penalties And The Earnings Of Mexican American Men, Alberto Davila, Alok K. Bohara, Rogelio Saenz

SHRI Publications

The effects on the earnings of Mexican American workers who speak English with an accent. In this study we find that, independent of English proficiency, Mexican Americans speaking English with an accent tend to earn significantly lower wages than their non-accented peers. This result is of interest to social scientists and policy makers for at least two reasons. First, antidiscrimination laws prevent employers from discriminating against workers on the basis of accent or manner of speaking. Second, immigration reform may have the unintended effect of depressing the wages of Mexican Americans and other Hispanics because the risk-averse employer may incorrectly …
