A New Perspective On Afro-Dominican Spanish: The Haitian Contribution, John M. Lipski May 1994

A New Perspective On Afro-Dominican Spanish: The Haitian Contribution, John M. Lipski

Research Papers

The present study represents a first attempt at reassessing the status of Afro-Dominican language. It will be proposed that the presence of African bozales (slaves born in Africa and speaking Spanish as a weak second language) diminished earlier in Spanish Santo Domingo than in other Caribbean areas which form the centerpiece for Afro-Hispanic linguistic theories. The 19th century sugar plantation boom which resulted in massive importation of African slaves into Cuba and Brazil barely touched the Dominican Republic, thus precluding the formation of a new bozal Spanish, as happened in Cuba. By far the greatest extra-Hispanic linguistic influence in the …

Background Of New Mexico Hispanic Literature, Francisco A. Lemeli Jan 1994

Background Of New Mexico Hispanic Literature, Francisco A. Lemeli

SHRI Publications

The present study attempts to present key aspects of the overall ambiance from whence emerged a large and diverse body of Hispanic writings in New Mexico. Socio-cultural factors are emphasized within their respective historical context and numerous examples are provided to substantiate the assertions, including linguistic terminologies influenced by the commingling. The central focus is to target self-referentiality as a means to reach an early literary consciousness that is at times in opposition with mainstream New Spain or what was commonly known as accounts or cr6nicas from Tenochti tlan or Mexico city. The articulation of such a consciousness is demonstrated …

Law And Language(S): Image, Integration And Innovation, Margaret E. Montoya Jan 1994

Law And Language(S): Image, Integration And Innovation, Margaret E. Montoya

Faculty Scholarship

Examining the complex relationship between law and language enhances our understanding of the marginalization and subordination of linguistic Outsiders. This nexus between law and language has many manifestations. In this essay I discuss the biases about language that constrain traditional legal discourse while I explore strategies for its reframing by using the languages of Outsiders. Succinctly stated, this essay posits that traditional language norms create images or maintain stereotypes that stultify public discourse as well as impose cultural integration and linguistic assimilation with destructive consequences. The essay proposes that linguistic norms in law schools can be refashioned through pedagogical innovations …

X-Bar Syntax In A Pedagogical Setting, Hector A. Torres Jan 1994

X-Bar Syntax In A Pedagogical Setting, Hector A. Torres

English Language and Literature Faculty Publications

In this brief essay I explore how X-bar syntax, the module in the theory of grammar that defines the head-complement relation in particular languages, may be used as an effective pedagogical tool when teaching college students encountering the theory of grammar for the first time. In particular, I pursue two distinct but interrelated objectives: (i) to show that X-bar theory, within its limits, can be used to teach such students the empirical nature of the study of constituent structure in an optimally simple way, and (ii) to propose a variant of X-bar theory that could supplement any English pedagogical grammar …

Mascaras, Trenzas, Y Grenas: Un/Masking The Self While Un/Braiding Latina Stories With Legal Discourse, Margaret E. Montoya Jan 1994

Mascaras, Trenzas, Y Grenas: Un/Masking The Self While Un/Braiding Latina Stories With Legal Discourse, Margaret E. Montoya

Faculty Scholarship

This article uses Critical Race Theory methodologies, such as autobiographical narratives, and analytical approaches, such as critical pedagogy. Using personal narrative, this Article examines the various masks ("mascaras") used to control how people respond to us and the important role such masks play in the subordination of Outsiders. The first part of the Article tells stories; the second part of the Article unbraids the stories to reveal an imbedded message: that Outsider storytelling is a discursive technique for resisting cultural and linguistic domination through personal and collective redefinition. The Article explores how transculturation creates new options for expression, personal identity, …

Treasures Of The Mama Huaca: Oral Tradition And Ecological Consciousness In Chinchaysuy, Enrique R. Lamadrid May 1993

Treasures Of The Mama Huaca: Oral Tradition And Ecological Consciousness In Chinchaysuy, Enrique R. Lamadrid

Research Papers

The cycle of Mama Huaca legends has continuing relevance to the indigenous and mestizo peoples of Chinchaysuyu, the vast northwest quadrant of the former Inca Empire, whose principal cities were Tomebamba (Cuenca) and Quito. The fearsome hag of the heights and guardian of the mountain and its treasures is a persistent figure in the Andean imagination. She inhabits a highly animated landscape in which mountains and lakes are assigned not only gender, but differing degrees of wealth and wildness (Munoz-Bernard 1990). The moral legends in which Mama Huaca is a protagonist are also intimately connected to local topography and sacred …
