Lovington Mainstreet: Community Economic Assessment, Jeffrey Mitchell, Molly J. Bleecker, Andrew Webb Feb 2009

Lovington Mainstreet: Community Economic Assessment, Jeffrey Mitchell, Molly J. Bleecker, Andrew Webb

BBER Publications

An analysis of economic conditions in Lovington, New Mexico, commissioned for its MainStreet program. The regional trade area surrounding Lovington (as determined by drive time analysis), and its downtown MainStreet district are described and displayed in color maps. Selected demographic, housing, and economic data for both Lovington and Lea County are examined. An analysis of pull factors revealed that Lovington has a net inflow of gross receipt tax revenues, largely due to oil and gas industry revenues. Lovington faces many challenges, including flat population growth, low educational achievement levels, a severe housing shortage, and the volatility of the petroleum industry. …

Theatre/Games: The Poetics, Ludology & Narrative In Video Game And Dramatic Structure, Matt Diel Jan 2009

Theatre/Games: The Poetics, Ludology & Narrative In Video Game And Dramatic Structure, Matt Diel

Theatre & Dance ETDs

This paper discusses the potential avenues of relationship between interactive media, particularly video games, and more traditional forms of theatrical production. It looks at the major theoretical paradigms of game structure in comparison to Aristotle's Poetics to find points of overlap between these two seemingly divergent entities, video games and theatre. As a specific point of reference, it also examines how my own artistic work has roots in both these worlds, and how the deepened understanding of their structures might contribute to my own artistic development.

Empowering The Invisible Child: A Narrative Case Study Of The Northwestern Michigan Migrant Program, Jessica Torrez Jan 2009

Empowering The Invisible Child: A Narrative Case Study Of The Northwestern Michigan Migrant Program, Jessica Torrez

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This Narrative Case Study examines the curriculum of the Northwestern Michigan Migrant Program (NMMP), specifically focusing on the programs guidelines, attitudes, and implications of language instruction. Furthermore, this research focuses on the implications of the NMMP's services and curriculum for the migrant community. Through interviews with students, administration (on both the local and federal levels), as well as migrant agricultural laborers, the findings reveal the need for simultaneous heritage language (HL) and English language instruction. Parents, students, and staff emphasized the significance of HL in community maintenance and an individual's relationship to the community, while underscoring the importance of English …

The Evolving Architecture Of North American Integration, Laura Spitz Jan 2009

The Evolving Architecture Of North American Integration, Laura Spitz

Faculty Scholarship

Given its potential significance for democracy, sovereignty, government, governance, and justice in each of Canada, the United States, and Mexico, North American integration qua integration has thus far received surprisingly little attention from legal scholars and social scientists. While an expanding body of research explores the dynamics of continental integration in other contexts (especially Europe) and/or examines the meaning of globalization, regionalism, and multilateral internationalism in a general sense, the specific constitution of an integrated North American space remains largely undertheorized. This Article aims to advance the literature in this area by examining legal discourse as an example of the …

Annacarla Scenes, Michael Mauldin Jan 2009

Annacarla Scenes, Michael Mauldin

New Mexico Composers' Archive

After enjoying Annacarla (my composing and teaching retreat in northern New Mexico) for four years, I realized that I had written a number of pieces there and had never been "dry" while composing there. But, outside of "The Valley at Annacarla" for the Durango Youth Symphony, I had not written music "about" what I saw and experienced there. These five short scenes may seem like fleeting visions or quixotic journal entries, but they represent brief but eternal moments of connection with the sacred that is all around us, "All That Is."

Advances And Applications Of Dezert-Smarandache Theory (Dsmt) For Information Fusion (Collected Works), Vol. 3, Florentin Smarandache, Jean Dezert

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This volume has about 760 pages, split into 25 chapters, from 41 contributors. First part of this book presents advances of Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) which is becoming one of the most comprehensive and flexible fusion theory based on belief functions. It can work in all fusion spaces: power set, hyper-power set, and super-power set, and has various fusion and conditioning rules that can be applied depending on each application. Some new generalized rules are introduced in this volume with codes for implementing some of them. For the qualitative fusion, the DSm Field and Linear Algebra of Refined Labels (FLARL) is …

Australian Aboriginality And Sociobiology, Allan Ardill Jan 2009

Australian Aboriginality And Sociobiology, Allan Ardill

Tribal Law Journal

“It has been argued elsewhere that the colonization, dispossession, and oppression of indigenous Australians have a close nexus with biological determinism, scientific racism, and the ideology known as sociobiology. In the United States similar arguments are made concerning the historic maltreatment meted out to African Americans. In Australia, the concern is with the continuing colonial control over the identity of Australian Aboriginal people.” In his essay Dr. Ardill explores indigenous Australian identity and its “reciprocal relationship with health, education, poverty, (loss of) language, native title, sovereignty and self-determination.” He argues “that the legal reasoning underpinning colonial control over Aboriginal identity …

Identity, Gender, And Language In Synchronous Cybercultures: A Cross-Cultural Study, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena, Ahmed Idrissi Alami, Gayathri Jayatilleke, Fawda Bouacharine

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The integration of the Internet into contemporary society worldwide has had a profound impact on the way we communicate, relate to ourselves, and to each other. Different users, depending on various characteristics such as age, gender, education, and sociocultural background, access the Internet for various communication needs such as exchanging emails, making new friends, or engaging in a serious discussion. Whatever the goal, users need to adjust to this new computer-mediated interactive environment, and they do so either in ways that reveal native cultural values, or reflect the creation of new cultural norms and conventions.

Evaluating Descriptive Richness In Collection-Level Metadata, Oksana L. Zavalina, Carole L. Palmer, Amy S. Jackson, Myung-Ja Han

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

When many collections are brought together in a federation or aggregation, the attributes of the original collections can become difficult to discern. Collection-level metadata has the potential to provide important context about the purpose and features of individual collections, but the qualitative aspects of collections are difficult to describe in a systematic way. This paper reports on a content analysis of collection records in the Digital Collections and Content (DCC) aggregation, conducted to analyze the kinds of substantive and purposeful information represented across 202 cultural heritage collections. We found that the free-text Description field often provides more accurate and complete …

Cooperative Federal Structure: A Workable Political-Economy Approach For A New Nepal, Alok Bohara Jul 2008

Cooperative Federal Structure: A Workable Political-Economy Approach For A New Nepal, Alok Bohara

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

The two main ethnocentric proposals for a federal structure –9 ethnic enclaves [CPN (M)] and the 1000 KM long east-west narrow corridor(s) [e.g., Madhesi parties’ demand for a single Terai state] as state(s)— are the two formal proposals that have drawn much attention of the lawmakers. Many, including this author, are of the view that the restructuring of the state needs to go beyond the cultural sentiment to incorporate many other issues such as: ecological interdependence, economy of scale, ethnic harmony, and comparative resource endowments. To that end, a cooperative federal structure proposed here takes the twelve ethnic regional enclaves …

Gender-Based Differences In Counseling Time In A Community Health Worker, Joel Berger, Angelo Tomedi, Jodi Casados, Vanessa Jacobsohn Jul 2008

Gender-Based Differences In Counseling Time In A Community Health Worker, Joel Berger, Angelo Tomedi, Jodi Casados, Vanessa Jacobsohn

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

Smoking represents a serious public health burden that crosses gender, racial, and socioeconomic lines. Although the majority of smoking cessation counseling traditionally occurs in the setting of a Primary Care Providers office, clinicians often lack the necessary time and/or cultural and language skills to provide adequate help to smokers prepared to quit. A Community Health Worker (CHW) smoking cessation project utilizing CHWs in San Diego, CA evaluated by Woodruff, et al effectively increased patient's abstinence rates in the intervention group. A similar project undertaken by the University of New Mexico Department of Family and Community Medicine employed bilingual CHWs to …

A Model Of Human Categorization And Similarity Based Upon Category Theory, Michael Healy, Thomas Caudell, Timothy Goldsmith Jul 2008

A Model Of Human Categorization And Similarity Based Upon Category Theory, Michael Healy, Thomas Caudell, Timothy Goldsmith

Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Categorization and the judgement of similarity are fundamental in cognition. We propose that these and other activities are based upon an underlying structure of knowledge, or concept representation, in the brain. Further, we propose that this structure can be represented mathematically in a declarative form via category theory, the mathematical theory of structure. We test the resulting mathematical model in an experiment in which human subjects provide judgements of similarity for pairs of line drawings using a numerical scale to represent degrees of similarity. The resulting numerical similarities are compared with those derived from the category-theoretic model by comparing diagrams. …

Project Summary and Goals Historically, affirmative action policies have evolved from initial programs aimed at providing equal educational opportunities to all students, to the legitimacy of programs that are aimed at achieving diversity in higher education. In June 2003, a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action pushed higher education across the threshold toward creating a new paradigm for diversity in the 21 51 century. The court clearly stale that affirmative action is still viable but that our institutions must reconsider our traditional concepts for building diversity in the next few decades. This shift in historical context of diversity in …
