Nuclearization Of The Kashmir Conflict, Nyla A. Khan
Nuclearization Of The Kashmir Conflict, Nyla A. Khan
Himalayan Policy Research Conference
The role played by the nation-states of India and Pakistan in the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) echoes the animosity created during the Partition of 1947. The political and social upheaval that followed upon the creation of the two nation-states in 1947 has left legacies that continue to haunt the two countries.

The Impact Of American Movies On Egyptian Cinema In 1950s And 1960s, Radi Abouelhassan
The Impact Of American Movies On Egyptian Cinema In 1950s And 1960s, Radi Abouelhassan
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
The 1952 military coup in Egypt constituted the beginning of a new era in Egypts history and pushed forward substantial societal, economic and political changes. These changes represent the fruits of the revolutionary regime's pro-modernization ideology. In their search for modernity, the Egyptian elite invested in cinema as well as other forms of media and tended to follow the models of western countries. The strong relation between the Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser and the US, as well as the dominance of the American movies shown Egypt compared to other foreign cinematic industries at that time, directed the Egyptian elite …
Tapping In Time: Visual And Auditory Selective Attention In Schizophrenia, Irene Patniyot
Tapping In Time: Visual And Auditory Selective Attention In Schizophrenia, Irene Patniyot
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Attention is a complex construct involving extensive interactions with working memory and executive control systems to process and extract meaning out of large amounts of multi-sensory information. Disruption of attention is a characteristic symptom in schizophrenia, and further studies on selective attention are crucial for understanding the disease. The current study looks at how subjects with schizophrenia selectively attend to either a visual or auditory metronome in the presence of asynchronous cross-modal distractors of 3 different frequencies (0.5, 1, and 2 Hz). Results showed that across all tasks of selective attention, patients with schizophrenia demonstrated increased variability in mean group …
Indigenous Andean Women In Colonial Textual Discourses, Sara Guengerich
Indigenous Andean Women In Colonial Textual Discourses, Sara Guengerich
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
This dissertation combines historical and literary analysis to challenge a history of literary studies that reads colonial texts as reflecting a real historical domination of indigenous Andean women in a patriarchal society. Through a comparative examination of colonial chronicles and archival documents, I reconsider the portrayal of these women as having played the role of victims from the very beginning of colonial relations through the seventeenth century. Through these sources, I unveil these womens discursive agency that was expressed in archival documents, only to be suppressed in colonial chronicles and contemporary literary criticism.
Forgetting The Weakness Of Her Sex And A Woman's Softness':Historians Of The Anglo-Norman World And Their Female Subject', Kimberly Klimek
Forgetting The Weakness Of Her Sex And A Woman's Softness':Historians Of The Anglo-Norman World And Their Female Subject', Kimberly Klimek
History ETDs
The number of historians who wrote during the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries creates the unusual problem of too many sources. The sheer number of interesting and powerful women does the same. In order to narrow the topic of the presentation of women in texts from this period, I have chosen nine historians and six women to focus on. The period from 950 to 1150 is a crucial period for the development of the scholastic method and therefore it gives us the most interesting, if not most confusing, period to work from. Additionally, this project focuses geographically on the …
English Immersion Of Middle And High School Korean Students: Linguistic And Cultural Experience Of Relocation To The Southwest United States, Yanghee Kim
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
With the onset of globalization, the Korean government has emphasized English education as a key issue for Korea to succeed in the global economy. The Korean public education system has faced dramatic shifts in English education; for example, English introduction at an early age. Koreans feel considerable social pressure to acquire English proficiency. This pressure has encouraged parents to send their children to English speaking countries in order for them to learn English. This study examines three Korean students who came to the U.S. with the purpose of studying English. The research questions were: how do Korean students experience English …

Exploring The Mathematical Thinking Of Bilingual Primary-Grade Students: Cgi Problem Solving From Kindergarten Through 2nd Grade, Mary Elisabeth Marshall
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
This study explores the mathematical thinking of native Spanish-speaking, primary-grade Latina/o students learning in bilingual classrooms where the majority of their mathematics instruction has been in Spanish. Guided by sociocultural theory, which emphasizes the important connection between language and conceptual development (Mahn, 2008; Sfard, 2001; Van Oers, 2001; Zack & Graves, 2001), and the theory and methods of Cognitively Guided Instruction [CGI] (Carpenter, Ansell, Franke, Fennema & Weisbeck, 1993; Carpenter, Fennema & Franke, 1994; Carpenter, Fennema & Franke, 1996; Carpenter, Fennema, Franke, Levi & Empson, 1999; Fennema, Franke, Carpenter & Carey, 1993; Turner, Celedón-Pattichis & Marshall, 2008), data were collected …

The Impact Of Indian Gaming On Educational Attainment, Poverty Among Native American Tribes, Aaron Diaz
Sociology ETDs
What is the impact of Indian gaming on educational attainment among Native American tribes? Is there a correlation between Indian gaming and poverty rates? Utilizing a combination of cross-sectional analysis and longitudinal case studies, I examine whether Indian gaming has an impact on educational attainment. I also explore the economic mechanism of how this effect occurs. I analyze the 1990 and 2000 census data in addition to raw data collected from the National Indian Gaming Commission website, which provided the year selected Native American tribes were approved to pursue the establishment of gaming on their reservations. No significance was recorded …
Beloved Savages And Other Outsiders: Genre And Gender Transgressions In The Travel Writings Of Herman Melville, Bayard Taylor, And Charles Warren Stoddard, Kelvin Ray Beliele
Beloved Savages And Other Outsiders: Genre And Gender Transgressions In The Travel Writings Of Herman Melville, Bayard Taylor, And Charles Warren Stoddard, Kelvin Ray Beliele
English Language and Literature ETDs
"'My dissertation is a study of the travel writings of three nineteenth-century American authors, Herman Melville, Bayard Taylor, and Charles Warren Stoddard. I argue that these writers evinced a rebellion encompassing literary as well as political and social subversion. In order to succeed in their rebellion, they relied upon genre transgression, the violation of the traditions and conventions of a particular genre, to convey defiant social opinions. They were demonstrative in voicing their critiques of American sexual, religious, and racial dogmas in their travel fiction and poetry. These three authors violated genre boundaries in most of their works, but especially …
Toward A Visual Paideia: Visual Rhetoric In Undergraduate Writing Programs, Candice Welhausen
Toward A Visual Paideia: Visual Rhetoric In Undergraduate Writing Programs, Candice Welhausen
English Language and Literature ETDs
New media and digital texts of the twenty-first century are generally characterized as rich and dynamic combinations of verbal, visual, and aural elements. Instruction in visual rhetoric in the writing classroom, however, has tended to focus on analysis with far less emphasis on teaching students how to produce multimodal texts. Drawing upon classical rhetorical theory, I propose the development of a visual paideia grounded in the educational goals of the Greco-Roman paideia to incorporate richly balanced instruction in both analysis and production of visual-dominant texts. I approach the development of a visual paideia via examining the current state of visual …
The Spread Of Change In French Negation, Angus Grieve-Smith
The Spread Of Change In French Negation, Angus Grieve-Smith
Linguistics ETDs
Many varieties of French have changed over the years from expressing predicate negation (Geurts 1998) with ne alone, to the embracing construction ne ... pas, and then to postverbal pas alone (Jespersen 1917). When the increase in the frequency of ne ... pas over time is plotted on a graph, it takes the S shape of the logistic function (Kroch 1989). Bybee and Thompson (1997) note that "the type frequency of a pattern determines its degree of productivity," but "high frequency forms with alternations resist analogical leveling.' These two observations provide an explanation for the logistic progression observed by Kroch …
Typology Of Signed Languages: Differentiation Through Kinship Terminology, Erin Wilkinson
Typology Of Signed Languages: Differentiation Through Kinship Terminology, Erin Wilkinson
Linguistics ETDs
Nearly all such studies have sought to understand the linguistic constraints of spoken languages, while largely neglecting signed languages. Despite the fact that spoken languages can be classified into types, signed languages are generally assumed to be clustered all together in one type which the current study challenges. Exploring the potential for a varied typology among signed languages requires identifying patterns across a sampling of geographically distinct and historically unrelated signed languages to formulate linguistic generalizations. To that end this study adopts Greenbergs 1966 analysis of Universals of Kinship Terminology, it examines the linguistic patterns that emerge from a comparison …
"Aquí No Pasó Nada": Terror, Remembrance And Healing In A Guatemalan "Green Zone", William G. Wagner
"Aquí No Pasó Nada": Terror, Remembrance And Healing In A Guatemalan "Green Zone", William G. Wagner
Anthropology ETDs
This research focuses on the experiences of survivors of political violence and their healers in Momostenango, Totonicapán. The majority population of Momostenango is Kiche' Maya. During Guatemala's civil war (1960-1996), the state used terror to silence popular resistance and to neutralize the threat of insurgent guerilla forces that drew wide support from Maya communities. From 1981 to 1983 state army and paramilitary forces resorted to scorched earth tactics that two different truth commissions subsequently characterized as genocidal. During the war, the military designated the town as a 'green zone' (a region sympathetic to and supportive of the military's counterinsurgency project). …

Designing A Village Water Supply System In Papua New Guinea: A Case Study In Third World Delopment, Barak Bruerd
Designing A Village Water Supply System In Papua New Guinea: A Case Study In Third World Delopment, Barak Bruerd
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Papua New Guinea (PNG) is the second largest island in the world and one of the most biologically and culturally diverse nations on the planet. One of the last true stone age people, they are struggling with the delicate balance of entering the 21st century without losing their unique cultural heritage or devastating the fragile ecosystem they have lived in harmony with for thousands of years. Slow, careful steps are needed in order to ensure sustainable development; however the hardships of living close to nature - disease, drought, malnutrition, and lack of access to healthcare services, are causing Papua New …
Australian English Rising Intonation: Frequency And Function During Talk-In-Interaction, Susan Buescher
Australian English Rising Intonation: Frequency And Function During Talk-In-Interaction, Susan Buescher
Linguistics ETDs
Research on Australian English has shown that in this variety, a high-rising intonation contour typically used with yes/no questions, is also often used with declarative statements (Guy et al. 1986, Fletcher et al., 2002, 2005). Previous researchers, working with data from sociolinguistic interviews have claimed that the Australian high-rising terminal (HRT) pitch contour functions as a floor-holding device to mitigate semantic complexity (Guy et al., 1986, Guy and Vonwiller 1989). However, the notion of \u2018semantic complexity has not been well-defined, and despite its proposed role in turn-taking, there have been no studies to date which have taken into account the …
The Biological Evidence Of The San-Pau-Chu People And Their Affinities, Hsiu-Man Lin
The Biological Evidence Of The San-Pau-Chu People And Their Affinities, Hsiu-Man Lin
Anthropology ETDs
Austronesian is one of the major language groups spoken. It is believed that Taiwan, Indonesian (east of Wallace line), or Bismarck Archipelago is the starting point for Austronesian migrations. It is also suggested that prehistoric cultures of Taiwan were established by the ancestors of the modern Taiwanese indigenous populations, who are also Austronesian speakers. The goals of this project are to estimate biological relationships of the San-Pau-Chu (SPC) to other Asian populations (especially Polynesians) and to evaluate if Taiwan indeed plays a major role in the history of Austronesian migrations by using both dental morphological data (metric and nonmetric dental …

Global, Rural, & Cultural Health Book Series
This second volume of theory development demonstrates further exploration and expansion of some of the theories used in nursing practice. Interdisciplinary theories were researched and utilized in the various theory expansions and development. Through our exploration of the theories incorporated in nursing practice and scholarship, we have expanded ways to extend or modify those theories to enhance our individual research interests.
