Rhetoric, Referential Communication, And The Novice Writer, Barbara P. Blumenfeld Oct 2012

Rhetoric, Referential Communication, And The Novice Writer, Barbara P. Blumenfeld

Faculty Scholarship

Classical rhetoric is integral to teaching legal writing, and this essay argues that its use must be enhanced with audience awareness. This is so rhetoric can be successfully applied to teaching and the practice of legal writing.

This essay begins with a very brief overview of the relationship of rhetoric to legal writing and how audience awareness is a key factor in both. This overview leads to a definition of two distinct tasks that must be incorporated into the writing process: first, learning about and understanding specific audiences; second, learning how to implement writing that works for that audience.

Interlanguage Pragmatic Development In Native Speaker/Nonnative Speaker Participatory Online Environments, Adrienne Gonzales Aug 2012

Interlanguage Pragmatic Development In Native Speaker/Nonnative Speaker Participatory Online Environments, Adrienne Gonzales

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This dissertation seeks to discover the ways in which participation in an online social networking site affects interlanguage pragmatic development. Livemocha is an online social network centered around language learning that emphasizes the collaboration required in constructing language. This social networking site encourages learners to establish an identity through their user profiles and to reach out to other members through email, text-based chat, video chat, or peer-reviewed lessons. This study examines interaction in text-based chat between native speakers (NSs) and language learners of Spanish in this environment. Conversations were collected from seven participants over the course of one academic year …

High Road Development In A Low Tech Industry: Policymakers, Producer Networks, And The Co-Production Of Innovation In The Mexican Ceramics Sector, Steven Samford Aug 2012

High Road Development In A Low Tech Industry: Policymakers, Producer Networks, And The Co-Production Of Innovation In The Mexican Ceramics Sector, Steven Samford

Political Science ETDs

When faced with the integration of international markets, some small producers in the developing world respond with low road' strategies that undermine wages and working conditions while others take the 'high road' to become globally competitive. Existing explanations — macroeconomic policy, human capital development, geography — are unable to account for this variation both across and within sectors. I address this variation by examining workshop-level responses to a government effort to develop and disseminate a lead-free glaze in the Mexican ceramics sector. Many producers have failed to adopt the glaze despite the fact that it promises to improve both their …

Students' Perceptions Of The Use Of Peer-To-Peer Esl Text Chat: An Introductory Study, Dale Arthur Garratt Aug 2012

Students' Perceptions Of The Use Of Peer-To-Peer Esl Text Chat: An Introductory Study, Dale Arthur Garratt

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Thousands of international ESL students come to the United States every year to learn English for the purpose of matriculating into an American university. Teaching these diverse students can be a challenge for educators and despite the students significant investment of time and money, many of them are inadequately prepared for the demands of university work. Text chat has been studied by some scholars as a means of assisting ESL students to write more effectively. However, greater understanding is needed of the affective experiences and perceptions of students toward peer-to-peer ESL text chat. That is the thrust of this study, …

Efl To Esl: A Case Study Of University International English L2 Students In Transition, Michael W. Schwartz Aug 2012

Efl To Esl: A Case Study Of University International English L2 Students In Transition, Michael W. Schwartz

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This is a case study of four international English L2 students transitioning from their home countries into the academic context of a US university. It investigates the intersections of identity and investment as English L2 students interact with English resources, and how proficiency may or may not mitigate the type and quality of access to English resources. Furthermore, the study proposes a learner as agent framework for understanding the processes of gaining access to English resources. Finally, the study argues that proficiency is a complex issue that needs to be analyzed and defined locally rather than globally and that decontextualized …

Conducting Women: Gender, Power,And Authority In The Rhetoric Of French And English Conduct Literature Of The Later Middle Ages, Marisa Sikes Aug 2012

Conducting Women: Gender, Power,And Authority In The Rhetoric Of French And English Conduct Literature Of The Later Middle Ages, Marisa Sikes

English Language and Literature ETDs

Conduct and courtesy literature have a long history, its vernacular tradition extending back to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. We are familiar with modern versions of this literature: Ann Landers advice column, women's magazines, and even modern books that tell us about etiquette. My dissertation examines English and French conduct literature of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries addressed to women. These texts build rhetorical authority in various ways. At one end of the spectrum of rhetorical authority there are texts that build credibility through charismatic and familial authority; on the other end there are those that build it through abstract …

Across Lands: Double Consciousness And Negotiating Identities In Early Chinese American Literature, 1847-1910s, Ying Xu Aug 2012

Across Lands: Double Consciousness And Negotiating Identities In Early Chinese American Literature, 1847-1910s, Ying Xu

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation analyzes the works of three early Chinese immigrant writers (Yung Wing, Yan Phou Lee, and Wong Chin Foo) and two mixed race writers (Edith Eaton and Winnifred Eaton) in late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century North America in order to critique the formation of early Chinese American literature. Borrowing W. E. B. Du Boiss construct of double consciousness and Amy Ling's theory of between worlds, I argue that the complicated double consciousness exhibited in the works of these early immigrant writers demonstrates their across lands strategies of negotiating identities prior to and during the Exclusion Era (1882-1943). My formulation …

Students' Perceptions Of Faculty Involvement At A New Mexico Community College: An Exploratory Study, Marvin F. Lozano Aug 2012

Students' Perceptions Of Faculty Involvement At A New Mexico Community College: An Exploratory Study, Marvin F. Lozano

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This exploratory study examines students perceptions of faculty involvement at a New Mexico community college and contributes to the existing literature and professional practice in post-secondary education. A web-based questionnaire was sent to 1,762 students resulting in a final analytic dataset of 136 respondents. The study provides evidence of the usefulness of Barnett's (2007, 2011) college experience questionnaire with a sample of students from a community college in New Mexico. Findings do not reflect a statistically significant relationship between students' demographic characteristics (age, gender, race/ethnicity, or socio-economic status) and their perceptions of faculty involvement. Findings, however, do reflect that there …

Conceptualizing Mental Health: A Qualitative Study On Mexican Immigrant Mothers' Definition Of Their Children's Mental Health In New Mexico, Cirila Estela Vasquez Guzman Aug 2012

Conceptualizing Mental Health: A Qualitative Study On Mexican Immigrant Mothers' Definition Of Their Children's Mental Health In New Mexico, Cirila Estela Vasquez Guzman

Sociology ETDs

Parents play a significant role in many areas of their childrens mental health, including understanding the concept, detection, utilization, and treatment options. Despite the importance of parents' role, there is relatively little research in the United States on Latino parents' conceptualization of the term mental health. This study focuses on understanding conceptualization patterns of children's mental health among low-income Mexican immigrant mothers. I utilize the social construction framework to investigate the social nature of the construct mental health. I also engage with the medicalization literature to shed light on the biomedical model's perspective on mental health. Nine focus groups were …

Preliminary Investigations Toward A Theory Of Pattern For Technology Design, Annalisa Aguilar Jul 2012

Preliminary Investigations Toward A Theory Of Pattern For Technology Design, Annalisa Aguilar

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

It is argued that today's scarcity of computer tools compatible with human experience derives from an antiquated dualistic model of mind, as passed down through the mid-20th century, during the early development of the computer and artificial intelligence, and up to the present day. Rather than settle for technology as inevitable and instead of depending upon worldviews that are no longer aligned with current empirical findings on human cognition, this thesis renders a broad imperative for a design theory informed by an ecological understanding of mind in society, with a worldview that reflects the historical development of technology as tools, …

I Felt Like The Enemy And The Savior All At Once': English Teacher Identity In A Methods Course Wiki, Michelle Jewett

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study explores the identity constructions of two cohorts of preservice teachers enrolled in English methods courses during a semester of field experience. This research employs a qualitative methodology and documents the nature of participants responses posted to online wiki forum. Data sources include archived electronic interactions and course assignments such as reflective journals. Constant-comparative method as described by Creswell (2007), content analysis as described by Marshall & Rossman (2006), and Gee's (2003) notion of affinity identity are used to examine the discourses and ideologies of methods students as they construct notions of English teacher identity. Study findings indicate a …

The Complex Journey Of Biracial (Korean Plus Other Racial/Ethnic Backgrounds) Youth In The Southwest, Kwang-Jong Park Jul 2012

The Complex Journey Of Biracial (Korean Plus Other Racial/Ethnic Backgrounds) Youth In The Southwest, Kwang-Jong Park

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study explores how biracial (Korean plus another racial/ethnic background) youth come to understand their ethnic sense of self in a southwestern state with low ethnolinguistic vitality of Korean language. The qualitative study using individual interviews and focus interviews captures dynamic and complex aspects of identity development in relation to social actors, social contexts and self. Vygotskys concepts of Perezhivanie and Social Situations of Development describe the ways in which biracial youth perceive, experience, and reflect on identity-related events. Furthermore, this study investigates the role of language in the identity development of biracial youth. The present study sheds light on …

What We Can Learn When We Teach Retrospective Miscue Analysis To Young, Adult, Incarcerated Males, Gwen Patriarca

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The purpose of this study was to examine what we can learn when we teach Retrospective Miscue Analysis (RMA) to incarcerated youths. Select incarcerate males who had been engaged in individual RMA sessions were brought together for one final CRMA group, which constituted a collaborative RMA session. The researcher set out to discover how RMA influenced their perceptions about the reading process and their emerging confidence in themselves as readers. The data consisted of interviews with the participants, Reading Miscue Inventories and the discussions involved in the RMA sessions and the final group session. The researcher came to the conclusion …

Forging Alliances Across Fronteras: Transnational Narratives Of Female Migration And The Family, Vanessa De Veritch Woodside Jul 2012

Forging Alliances Across Fronteras: Transnational Narratives Of Female Migration And The Family, Vanessa De Veritch Woodside

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This dissertation examines the effects of transnational migration on women with particular attention to the (re-)negotiation of personal and cultural identity resulting from the adoption of novel roles within Chicana narratives of Mexican migration. Chapter One offers a historical background regarding the U.S.-Mexico border, (im)migration, and more specifically, women and migration, as well as an overview of pertinent Chicano migrant literature that serves as an appropriate point of departure for discussion of Chicana re-writings of such texts. This discussion offers border feminism as a framework for analyzing the representation of evolving feminine roles and familial configurations in the context of …

Ars Audax: The Myth Of The Flight Of Icarus And Its Reception Since Antiquity, Jessica Rose Wells Jul 2012

Ars Audax: The Myth Of The Flight Of Icarus And Its Reception Since Antiquity, Jessica Rose Wells

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

When considering the reception of Icarus, scholars traditionally have not taken into account the focalizing character. In this thesis I argue that there are two divergent threads of reception for the Icarus myth, stemming from the versions in Ovids Ars Amatoria and Metamorphoses and in Horace's Odes. I demonstrate that the manner in which each author employs Icarus — whether he is the object of focalization or the subject of focalization — and the manner in which each author employs the concept of audacia ('daring') and makes use of sailing metaphors constitute distinct reception threads. I then trace these threads …

Untranslatable Words In Classical Latin: The Problem With Pius, Keith Alexander Woodell Jul 2012

Untranslatable Words In Classical Latin: The Problem With Pius, Keith Alexander Woodell

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The Romans of the Classical Era (circa 100 B.C.E. to 15 C.E.) had a social, religious, and legal structure that was vastly different from that of modern Western societies. On account of this difference and especially due to the influence of the Christian religion, many Roman concepts have been misunderstood and mistranslated. This thesis analyzes the Latin word pius along with its nominal and adverbial derivatives in ancient literature to try to understand how the concept actually worked in Roman cognition. Perhaps due to the fact that words like pity,' 'pious,' and 'piety' all derive from pius, the way it …

Capital Mediators: American Mining Engineers In The U.S. Southwest And Mexico, 1850-1914, Sarah E.M. Grossman Jul 2012

Capital Mediators: American Mining Engineers In The U.S. Southwest And Mexico, 1850-1914, Sarah E.M. Grossman

History ETDs

This dissertation analyzes the technical work and social milieu of American mining engineers to understand the daily negotiations by which private U.S. capital reached up to and across the southwestern border as part of an ongoing project of American territorial and economic expansion. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, American mining engineers traveled all over the world as expert consultants and labor managers. The business negotiations, elite social networks, and gendered discourse of expertise' invoked by these technocratic professionals were critical influences in bringing the hard-rock mining districts of North America into the economic system of the United …

A River Of Voices: Confluences And Cross-Currents In The Discourse Of The Colorado River, Paul Formisano Jul 2012

A River Of Voices: Confluences And Cross-Currents In The Discourse Of The Colorado River, Paul Formisano

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation argues that the Colorado River and its watershed face a crisis of representation as privileged nineteenth-century myths portraying the American West as a frontier, garden, and wilderness have limited an understanding of what and whom the river is for. It examines the contribution of tributary voices' or the lesser known perspectives from the region to reveal new lines of thinking about this river and its surroundings as they engage the traditional views of the river shaped by these myths. The voices examined at length in this study include contemporary nature writer Craig Childs, recent female boating narratives by …

Dancing Along The Tightrope Of Leisure: Puritans And Dance In Seventeenth-Century Massachusetts, Rachel A. Packard Jul 2012

Dancing Along The Tightrope Of Leisure: Puritans And Dance In Seventeenth-Century Massachusetts, Rachel A. Packard

Theatre & Dance ETDs

A more holistic view of the Puritans in seventeenth-century Massachusetts can be reached by looking at their complex relationship with leisure and its manifestation both in their dance practice and attitudes towards dance. This thesis takes a multi-disciplinary approach in bringing to light this understanding, consisting of research into a variety of fields including music, English history, Colonial American history, social dance studies, and theology. Chapter I lays out the theological and historical heritage of the Non-separatist Puritans who sailed to Massachusetts with John Winthrop in 1630. Chapter II progresses through a detailed exploration of Puritan dance examples and analyses …

Political Mavens: Ruth Underhill, Erminie Wheeler-Voegelin, Gene Weltfish, Ella Deloria, And The Politics Of Culture, Alessandra Link Jul 2012

Political Mavens: Ruth Underhill, Erminie Wheeler-Voegelin, Gene Weltfish, Ella Deloria, And The Politics Of Culture, Alessandra Link

History ETDs

The locus of this masters thesis, 'Political Mavens: Ruth Underhill, Erminie Wheeler-Voegelin, Gene Weltfish, Ella Deloria, and the Politics of Culture,' centers on how female anthropologists shaped political discourses in the twentieth century. The anthropologist has long been considered the handmaiden of imperialism, made most apparent in Vine Deloria's Custer Died for Your Sins (1969). Although partially true, my work seeks to complicate this association by examining how the publications and careers of four female anthropologists demonstrate both their ties to colonialism, and, in the case of Gene Weltfish and Ella Deloria, their scholarly attempts to critique the colonialist state …

Three Rivers As Transitional Zone: Considering A Collective Metanarrative In Pueblo Prehistory, Heather Kline Jul 2012

Three Rivers As Transitional Zone: Considering A Collective Metanarrative In Pueblo Prehistory, Heather Kline

Art & Art History ETDs

The Three Rivers petroglyph site in what is presently south central New Mexico represents important concepts for the study of southwestern prehistory. This site has been studied to a limited degree from the perspective of archaeological site surveys that have categorically classified the motifs represented on the petroglyphs, but at this point very little is known about the cultures that lived and created art in the Three Rivers area. The iconography of these images is remarkably similar to that represented on ceramics at both Mimbres during the Classic period (ca. AD 1000-1150), as well as Casas Grandes during the Medio …

Subversion Through Inversion: Kent Monkman's "The Triumph Of Mischief", Monique Thérèse Belitz Jul 2012

Subversion Through Inversion: Kent Monkman's "The Triumph Of Mischief", Monique Thérèse Belitz

Art & Art History ETDs

Monkmans acrylic painting The Triumph of Mischief is the central subject of this investigation which includes its relationship to other paintings and objects in the installation The Triumph of Mischief. By applying Mieke Bal's narratology theory, the principles of carnivals as proposed by Mikhail Bahktin, the four dichotomies underlying Western movies, Monkman's appropriation of older art work, his use of various binary opposites and his inclusion of iconographic details from various art history epochs are explained. Investigating the painting from a postcolonial and postmodern theoretical angle demonstrates that several iconic images from Western art history are decolonized by mocking and …

Pattern And Process In Metabolic Ecology: From Biotic Interactions To Cultural Diversity Gradients, William R. Burnside Jul 2012

Pattern And Process In Metabolic Ecology: From Biotic Interactions To Cultural Diversity Gradients, William R. Burnside

Biology ETDs

Many ecological patterns and processes are functions of metabolism (Brown 2004), meaning the acquisition, transformation, and allocation of energy, materials, and information within the bodies of individuals and among members of human and other animal societies. Individual metabolic rate should influence behavior by determining the energy available for action as well as the rate at which the body requires fuel. First, I test a key prediction of the metabolic theory of ecology (MTE), that biotic interaction rates are characteristic functions of temperature. Findings support this prediction and suggest that herbivory, predation, parasitism, parasitoidy, and competition increase exponentially with temperature and …

Investigating Epistemological Implications Of Geospatial Representation In The Making Of Histories Of The Pueblos, Using An Exploratory Mixed Methods Approach, Judith Van Der Elst Jul 2012

Investigating Epistemological Implications Of Geospatial Representation In The Making Of Histories Of The Pueblos, Using An Exploratory Mixed Methods Approach, Judith Van Der Elst

Anthropology ETDs

The claim that epistemological differences between western science and indigenous research methodologies are the roots of contention of the interpretation and construction of histories is investigated. An exploratory mixed methods approach is employed to test whether current systems of geospatial analysis and representation are suitable for understanding different ways of knowing, focused on the spatial domain as a fundamental cognitive domain. Recent studies indicate that spatial cognition is significantly different among speakers of different language groups and that spatial ontology is not universal across the human population, providing the theoretical underpinning for questioning the organizational principles of currently used systems …

Immigration In Rural Newfoundland: Individual And Community Change, Willow Jackson Anderson Jul 2012

Immigration In Rural Newfoundland: Individual And Community Change, Willow Jackson Anderson

Communication ETDs

The purpose of this study is to learn about the cultural adaptation experiences of immigrants to rural Newfoundland and what, if any, changes the communities themselves have made. I am particularly interested in what role communication plays in these change processes. To investigate this topic I conducted interviews and focus groups with both immigrants and native-born Newfoundlanders in rural areas and then analyzed the resulting data with a rigorous thematic analysis. To accomplish this purpose, I recruited and interviewed eight immigrants and 10 native-born Newfoundlanders in rural areas of the province. Then I conducted three focus groups with each of …
