Primary Language, Maternal Language Use, And Cognitive Outcomes Among Preschoolers Born Very Low Birth Weight, Natalia Moss Jun 2016

Primary Language, Maternal Language Use, And Cognitive Outcomes Among Preschoolers Born Very Low Birth Weight, Natalia Moss

Psychology ETDs

Very low birth weight (VLBW; ≤1500 grams) preschoolers are at risk for cognitive and executive functioning (EF) difficulties. Maternal language quality may impact cognitive development in VLBW children. The aims of this study were to explore differences in maternal language (Spanish, English) and child cognitive abilities, and to explore associations between maternal language use (verbal scaffolding and structuring) and child cognitive abilities in VLBW preschoolers (3.5-4 years). Caregivers reported sociodemographic information. Cognitive abilities were measured using the WPPSI-III (VIQ, PIQ), Bear Dragon, and Gift Delay Peek scores. Results showed English speaking children scored higher on VIQ. For English speaking children, …

Maternal Interactive Behaviors And Developmental Outcomes In Preschoolers Born Very Low Birth Weight, Rebecca E. Rieger Jun 2016

Maternal Interactive Behaviors And Developmental Outcomes In Preschoolers Born Very Low Birth Weight, Rebecca E. Rieger

Psychology ETDs

Children born very low birth weight (VLBW) are at greater risk for cognitive and executive deficits than children born normal birth weight. One factor in development is parental wellbeing. Parents who report more depressive symptoms and lower perception of resources have poorer quality interactive behaviors. This study investigated the associations between maternal interactive behaviors during play and developmental outcomes in preschoolers born VLBW. A secondary goal was to understand the associations among maternal depressive symptoms, perception of resources, and interactive behaviors. A tertiary goal was to investigate racial and ethnic differences in maternal behaviors. Overall, one maternal behavior was negatively …

Sociolinguistics For Kids: A Curriculum For Bilingual Students, Mary Hudgens Henderson Jun 2016

Sociolinguistics For Kids: A Curriculum For Bilingual Students, Mary Hudgens Henderson

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

While sociolinguistics outreach projects have been created with native-English-speaking students in mind (Reaser, 2006; Sweetland, 2006; Wheeler & Swords, 2006), a language awareness program has yet to be created and implemented for English Language Learners. To meet this need, eighteen Sociolinguistic Awareness lessons were designed, implemented, and evaluated for Spanish-English bilingual 5th graders enrolled in a Dual Language program (N = 24) in the Southwest U.S. The Language Variation and Style-Shifting curriculum was assessed through 1) pretest and posttest language surveys; 2) conversational interviews with select participants before and after the lessons were taught; and 3) field notes collected by …

Bilingual Education At Two Urban High Schools: A Cross Case Analysis, Gabriel Gonzales Jun 2016

Bilingual Education At Two Urban High Schools: A Cross Case Analysis, Gabriel Gonzales

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

By 2042, racial minority groups will comprise the majority of the population in the United States. This reality will bring with it a diversity of cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds as represented by the students in Americas schools. How public schools respond to this changing demographic will define the future of our country. This study answers three research questions: What impact did the implementation of a comprehensive bilingual program at Altura High School and Parkland High School have on school culture and teachers' perceptions and practices? What impact does a comprehensive bilingual program have on the academic outcomes of students? …

Mixing The Roman Miles: Character Development In Terence's Eunuchus, Samantha Davis Jun 2016

Mixing The Roman Miles: Character Development In Terence's Eunuchus, Samantha Davis

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

In my thesis I explore Terences innovative development of three stock characters: Chaerea, the adulescens amator, Thraso, the miles gloriosus, and Gnatho, the parasitus. In the Eunuchus Terence provides each of these characters with a mythological parallel that reveals the character's inner thoughts, motives, and justifications, as well as their self-perceived position within Roman society. The first chapter traces the development of the figure of the adulescens amator in Roman literature and examines how Terence's incorporation of mythological burlesque defies dramatic conventions. The second chapter analyzes key dramatic relationships that suggest a parallel to the historical relationship between Rome and …

"Sed Neque Silentio Pretereundum": An Analysis Of The Miracles Of Saint William Of Norwich, Sarah Rose Edwards Obenauf Jun 2016

"Sed Neque Silentio Pretereundum": An Analysis Of The Miracles Of Saint William Of Norwich, Sarah Rose Edwards Obenauf

History ETDs

William of Norwich was born around 1132, and, according to his biographer Thomas of Monmouth, he was killed by Jews during Easter week of 1144. Consequently, whenever William is mentioned in modern scholarship, it is almost always in relation to Jewish ritual murder and the blood libel legend. To date, no scholarship has systematically categorized or analyzed the miracles and visions contained in The Life and Passion of William of Norwich nor discussed what these stories suggest about the pilgrims who visited his tomb. Using disability theory, this thesis analyzes eighty medical miracles performed by the boy saint. I begin …

A Chance For Change: Treating Disorganized Attachment With The Attachment Healing Center Model Of Treatment, Michele Coleman

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

In this study I investigated the psycho-educational component of the Healing in Resonance model of treatment as implemented at the Attachment Healing Center for working with children who have been identified as having disorganized attachment. Multi-case methodology was used with five families representing five parents and five children. Grounded theory was used to analyze the journals, interviews and focus group discourse of the participants. There were also some quantitative tools used to diagnose the children and to quantify their behavioral changes. The grounded theory analysis revealed the importance of the childs caregivers taking ownership for how they show up in …

Obamacare In New Mexico: The New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange: Who Or What Influences And Motivates Hispanic Individuals To Enroll?, Joseph Sanchez

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

The primary purpose of this study is to explore factors and contexts that influenced and motivated individuals to enroll in the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The ACA, commonly called Obamacare, is also known as the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange (NMHIX). The study is specifically designed to examine the participants lived experiences and opinions regarding the acquisition, or opposition to health care insurance coverage. I have employed the hermeneutic phenomenological research methodology to conduct this study. Nine self-identified Hispanic residents of the San Miguel County (SMC) participated in semi-structured in-depth interviews. The research site for the current study was the …

Interaction With Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing Individuals And Decisions Made By Iep Team Members, Rosemary J. Gallegos Jun 2016

Interaction With Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing Individuals And Decisions Made By Iep Team Members, Rosemary J. Gallegos

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between the characteristics of IEP (Individual Education Program) team members and the decisions they make for deaf and hard of hearing students under the constraints of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). I used a sociocultural framework and Intergroup Contact Theory (ICG) (Rodenborg & Boisen, 2013) to posit the importance of the amount and type of interactions between deaf and hearing individuals in reducing prejudice by the majority group (not deaf or hard of hearing) and developing the empathy needed by decision makers who are often hearing in promoting …

"I Heard The Same Thing Once Before": Intertextuality In Selected Works Of Evelyn Waugh, Janelle Lynn Ortega Jun 2016

"I Heard The Same Thing Once Before": Intertextuality In Selected Works Of Evelyn Waugh, Janelle Lynn Ortega

English Language and Literature ETDs

Through the lens of structural intertextuality, this dissertation reveals the significance of literary allusion in some of Evelyn Waughs works. It investigates intertextual significance and intent that has, heretofore, been largely bypassed. This study tracks Waugh's intertextual instances from his earliest novels through his short stories to one of his final works. Waugh's intertextuality unearths a hope for not only literary culture but also the world at large. A study of Waugh's intertextuality uncovers an overarching theme of hope rooted in literary culture. This dissertation begins with an explanation of intertextual theory and the words and phrases pivotal to a …

A Variationist Perspective On Spanish-Origin Verbs In Paraguayan Guarani, Josefina Bittar Prieto May 2016

A Variationist Perspective On Spanish-Origin Verbs In Paraguayan Guarani, Josefina Bittar Prieto

Linguistics ETDs

Paraguay presents a unique case of societal bilingualism in Latin America. Almost 90% of its population speaks the indigenous language Guarani, and half of the population is bilingual in Spanish and Guarani. However, contemporary Guarani has been described as an unpredictable, ad-hoc mix of Guarani and Spanish. This idea is also reflected in the local term jopara 'mixture', which is used to refer to the variety by its speakers. A particularly salient contact feature are loan verbs, i.e. Spanish-origin roots used with Guarani morphology. To gain an empirical perspective on the presence and motivation of Spanish loan verbs in Guarani, …

Unexpected Accompaniment: Cognitive Mechanisms For Language-Music Mismatch In Time, Hui-Chieh Hsu May 2016

Unexpected Accompaniment: Cognitive Mechanisms For Language-Music Mismatch In Time, Hui-Chieh Hsu

Linguistics ETDs

Extensive research has been carried out for the role played by anticipation in human cognition (Br\xf4ne 2012; Coulson 2005; Huron 2006). Employing the terms 'anticipation' and 'expectation' interchangeably, these studies emphasize only the temporal sequentiality between elements taking place at different points in time, a relation parallel to the progression of time. In modes of communication where simultaneous events are possible, however, there exists a similar but distinct relation between elements simultaneously represented in time. This is expectation, a relation perpendicular to the progression of time. Ubiquitous and indispensable for our understanding of the most ordinary, the relation of expectation …

From The Unexpected To The Unbelievable: Thetics, Miratives And Exclamatives In Conceptual Space, Jose Hugo Garcia Macias May 2016

From The Unexpected To The Unbelievable: Thetics, Miratives And Exclamatives In Conceptual Space, Jose Hugo Garcia Macias

Linguistics ETDs

This study investigates the relationship between three linguistic functions: thetics, miratives and exclamatives. Thetics are an information structure configuration that conveys that the information is new to the addressee. The thetic subtypes selected for this study are the following: existentials (e.g. There are apples in the kitchen); presentatives (e.g. Heres your book); weather statements (e.g. It rains); physical sensation statements (e.g. My HEAD hurts) and hot news (e.g. MIchael JACKson died). Thetics do not perform a predication but present the state of affairs as a whole. Crosslinguistically, they tend to use morphosyntactic strategies that distinguish them from prototypical predications. Similar …

A Cognitive Grammar Analysis Of The Semantics Of The Russian Verbal Prefix Na-, Christopher Hart-Moynihan May 2016

A Cognitive Grammar Analysis Of The Semantics Of The Russian Verbal Prefix Na-, Christopher Hart-Moynihan

Linguistics ETDs

The Russian verbal prefix na- is one of a set of aspectual prefixes that exhibit characteristics of both derivational and inflectional morphemes. In addition to forming aspectual pairs as a grammatical marker of Perfective aspect, na-, in many cases, also carries lexical meaning; in these cases, na-prefixation changes the lexical/semantic meaning of the verbal stem, resulting in a distinct lexical item. I examine a sample of 40 verbs to compare the frequencies of na- as a lexicalized prefix and as a grammaticalized prefix. I then propose a radial category model to account for the polysemous functions of na-, with several …

A Radical Construction Grammar Analysis Of Antipassive Constructions, Meagan Vigus May 2016

A Radical Construction Grammar Analysis Of Antipassive Constructions, Meagan Vigus

Linguistics ETDs

Voice is one of the most complex grammatical phenomena expressed in human language. Broadly, voice is concerned with how the functional relations between participants in a clause are mapped onto grammatical roles in different ways. While voice has been widely studied (e.g., Fox & Hopper 1994, Givón 1994), specifically the passive voice (e.g., Haspelmath 1990, Givón 1994, Shibatani 1988, Croft 2001 chapter 8), the antipassive voice has not been studied in such detail. There has been work on the definition and typology of antipassive constructions and their morphology (Foley & Van Valin 1984:168-181, Givón 1994, Dixon & Aikhenvald 1997, Brus …

Illustrating The Prototype Structures Of Parts Of Speech: A Multidimensional Scaling Analysis, Phillip Rogers May 2016

Illustrating The Prototype Structures Of Parts Of Speech: A Multidimensional Scaling Analysis, Phillip Rogers

Linguistics ETDs

Radical Construction Grammar (Croft 2001) proposes that parts of speech can be explained as prototypes that emerge from the use of broad semantic classes of words--objects, properties, and actions--in basic propositional act functions of discourse--reference, modification, and predication. This theory predicts that each of these broad semantic classes will be typologically unmarked in its prototypical propositional act function and relatively marked in other propositional act functions. Because this theory speaks to such a broad and fundamental organization of linguistic structure, the rich structure of these prototypes has not been fully explored in a comprehensive manner. Gradience is a key characteristic …

Verbs Of Speech And Cognition: Structural Patterns In New Mexican Spanish, Víctor A. Valdivia Ruiz May 2016

Verbs Of Speech And Cognition: Structural Patterns In New Mexican Spanish, Víctor A. Valdivia Ruiz

Linguistics ETDs

From a usage-based approach, this dissertation explores the relationship between structural variability and discourse subjectivity in a series of interviews from the New Mexico and Southern Colorado Spanish Survey (Bills and Vigil 2008). Focusing on the use of cognitive and speech verbs, the analysis will demonstrate that a) structural patterns arising from said interaction form a continuum ranging from schematic to fixed constructions; b) the degree of morpho-syntactic variability of these constructions correlates to the speakers stance towards the information being communicated; and c) in actual interaction, speakers frequently introduce subjective nuances, even if the topic of the discourse may …

Artifacts Of Representation: The Makings Of Indigeneity In Argentine Museums, Amy Kathleen Sartor May 2016

Artifacts Of Representation: The Makings Of Indigeneity In Argentine Museums, Amy Kathleen Sartor

Anthropology ETDs

Museums are an integral part of a nation's identity formation - showcasing to national and international visitors what it means to be part of that nation. In Argentina, where national identity is tied to deep colonial roots, indigenous contributions in museums are often essentialized into a form that can easily be absorbed and appropriated by non-indigenous Argentines, as part of a legacy of an ethnic past. For my research, I visited museums in Argentina and cataloged how indigenous people were represented in order to analyze Argentina's interactions with the indigenous people that are often believed not to exist. My thesis …

Female Gender Role Representation Between 1990 And 2010 In Imported Children's Cartoons And Their Implications For Conservative Yemeni Culture, Fatima Al-Hattami May 2016

Female Gender Role Representation Between 1990 And 2010 In Imported Children's Cartoons And Their Implications For Conservative Yemeni Culture, Fatima Al-Hattami

Communication ETDs

This thesis explores the female gender role representations in imported cartoons across the years 1990 and 2010 and their resonance with the conservative Yemeni Muslim culture. The two selected cartoons are A Little Princess Sara (a Nippon Animation production) and Totally Spies (a Marathon Media production), both of which are imported to the Arab countries, dubbed into the Arabic language, aired on Arab childrens channels and popular among girls. The study is inspired by theories of media and cultural globalization and imperialism, which were developed to explain media policies and flow around the globe. The study also draws on the …

Critical Discourse Analysis Of Colombian Identities And Humanature In National Geographic Magazine (1903-1952), Mónica Pérez-Marín May 2016

Critical Discourse Analysis Of Colombian Identities And Humanature In National Geographic Magazine (1903-1952), Mónica Pérez-Marín

Communication ETDs

The main purpose of this dissertation is to challenge assumptions of neutrality and objectivity in popular science journalism by investigating how representations of Colombian identities and humanature in National Geographic Magazine between 1903 and 1952 create social knowledge and power in the context of the U.S.-Colombia relations. The investigation is based on the analysis of nine in-depth articles, including 214 pages of written text, 200 photos, and 6 maps. I applied two methods of analysis: critical discourse analysis and visual rhetoric. The discussion of discursive practices, textual structures, and social practices was organized chronologically into three significant periods and related …

Influence Of Social Capital On Community-Based Health Care Programs In Rural Papua New Guinea: An Ethnographic Study, Carol J. Bett Feb 2016

Influence Of Social Capital On Community-Based Health Care Programs In Rural Papua New Guinea: An Ethnographic Study, Carol J. Bett

Nursing ETDs

This descriptive, ethnographic study explored the influence of cultural health beliefs and social capital on the adoption of community-based health care interventions by rural villages in Papua New Guinea. The development of local level resources that lead to improved health indices requires an awareness of both the cultural context and the relational components of social capital that link people within the community. Social capital has been defined as resources that are an inherent part of a social group and the elements of social organization such as trust, networks, and norms of reciprocity that facilitate mutual cooperation (Billings, 2000; Carpiano, 2006). …

Applied Literature: Expanding Cultural Understanding For Language Learners, Ahmed Sallam Feb 2016

Applied Literature: Expanding Cultural Understanding For Language Learners, Ahmed Sallam

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study contributes to the empirical research on the use of literary texts in language learning. Specifically, it focuses on two groups of adult English language learners who are students at an American university as they read, write about, and discuss literature written by an author from the local area and which portrays the local culture in which the university is situated. This study seeks to examine how adopting an aesthetic stance can help foreign students, new to the university, evoke a wide range of responses and pay attention to language input and cultural context.
