Global Refugee Crisis And South Asia’S Geopolitics: The Case Of The Bhutanese Refugees, Lopita Nath
Global Refugee Crisis And South Asia’S Geopolitics: The Case Of The Bhutanese Refugees, Lopita Nath
Himalayan Policy Research Conference
The exodus of the Lhotshampas of ethnic Nepali descent from Bhutan since the 1990s is another case of forced migration in South Asia. After 17 years in refugee camps in Nepal and failed negotiations by the United Nation High Commissioner of Refugees to repatriate the refugees back to Bhutan, third country resettlement became the only solution. Since 2008, 100,000 refugees have been resettled in the United States, Australia, Canada, U.K. and the Netherlands, with over 86,000 in the United States. This paper seeks to examine the implications of South Asia’s geopolitics on the creation and management of this refugee crisis …

Changes In Disfluent Behavior During Adaptation In Stuttering, Chloe Mizusawa
Changes In Disfluent Behavior During Adaptation In Stuttering, Chloe Mizusawa
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore changes in disfluent speech during adaptation to better understand the mechanism for improving fluency in People Who Stutter (PWS). It was hypothesized that disfluencies would become less complex and shorter in duration with successive oral readings similar to changes noted in fluent speech. Method: This study included seven participants who stuttered. Digital sound and video recordings were used to acoustically analyze disfluent speech at both the reading and word level. Group analysis was conducted to find patterns of change for both adapting and nonadapting subjects. The following measures were analyzed: frequency …
At The Crossroads Of Tanf And Early Childhood Policy: The Impact Of Devolution And Health Advocacy Networks On Progressive Policy Choices, Shannon Terry
Political Science ETDs
Despite the conventional wisdom that U.S. social policies represent the emergence of a monolithic, racialized system of poverty governance that is purely punitive, there is increasing evidence that many states are repealing disciplinary social policy measures. In fact, several states are increasingly adopting enabling policies that are aimed at increasing public benefits to restore social equity among low-income families. These developments challenge current depictions of the landscape of the U.S. welfare state and they suggest that social and early childhood health policy choices may not simply emanate from a unified conservative social movement and racialized social structures. This dissertation fills …
Hushgah Adiish The Badlands Lodge: A Hidatsa Cultural Hub On The Upper-Missouri River In The Late Nineteenth Century, Michael Barthelemy Jr
Hushgah Adiish The Badlands Lodge: A Hidatsa Cultural Hub On The Upper-Missouri River In The Late Nineteenth Century, Michael Barthelemy Jr
History ETDs
The way our people, the Hidatsa, begin a narrative about older times is There was smoke in the village. It draws one into this idea that the village was prosperous and that the people had wood to burn and cook fires, with plenty of food for all. This past is viewed longingly by recent generations because of the hardships the people have endured since the introduction of European disease and relocation to lands our people deem undesirable. This very same nostalgia is what fueled an exodus from Like-A-Fishhook Village, driving the Crow-Flies-High Band of Hidatsa and Mandan Indians 120 miles …
Modeling Compositional Grammars In Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story (1957), Thomas William Posen
Modeling Compositional Grammars In Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story (1957), Thomas William Posen
Music ETDs
As a result of Leonard Bernstein's numerous didactic lectures, he is generally recognized as a tonal composer who misrepresented or even misunderstood other compositional grammars. But, while scholars criticize Bernstein for these reasons, close analysis of his own music reveals a different story. Using post-tonal theory and semiotics, I examine Bernstein's music from the perspective of compositional grammars—some not tonal—through analysis of three pieces from West Side Story (1957), 'The Rumble,' the 'Tonight' ensemble, and the 'Cool Fugue. I demonstrate that although Bernstein passionately defended tonality as the means to unite composers and audiences—especially Broadway audiences—analysis of West Side Story …
"The Distemper Of A Gentleman": Grotesque Visual And Literary Depictions Of Gout In Great Britain 1744-1826, Calinda Shely
"The Distemper Of A Gentleman": Grotesque Visual And Literary Depictions Of Gout In Great Britain 1744-1826, Calinda Shely
English Language and Literature ETDs
In this dissertation I explore the way in which visual and literary representations of gout in British literature and popular culture during the period 1744-1826 evince anxieties regarding over-consumption, particularly in relation to imperial expansion. I argue that the prevalence of gout in graphic satire indicates a common cultural understanding and perception of upper-class over-consumption of food, alcohol, material goods, and sex that threatens the health of the entire British body politic. These depictions provide a way through which the interests of those outside of the ruling classes can begin to develop a sense of community and subtly articulate a …

Brief For The American Association On Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities (Aaidd), And The Arc Of The United States As Amicus Curiae, James W. Ellis, Ann M. Delpha, Carol M. Suzuki, Steven Homer, David Stout, April Land
Faculty Scholarship
As with any field of scientific inquiry, our understanding of the condition of intellectual disability is improved and enhanced over time by continuing, rigorous study and analysis. The scientific study and the diagnosis of intellectual disability involve issues important to scholars and clinicians. But amici believe that there is no need for this Court to become enmeshed in the details and intricacies of those scholarly efforts in order to resolve the instant case and to provide guidance to lower courts in their task of fairly adjudicating cases under Atkins v. Virginia, 536 U.S. 304 (2002). This Court need only affirm …

Iconicity Effects In Translation Direction: Bimodal Bilingual Lexical Processing, Benjamin Anible
Iconicity Effects In Translation Direction: Bimodal Bilingual Lexical Processing, Benjamin Anible
Linguistics ETDs
Second language learners of American Sign Language (ASL) have an unusual preference for translating "forward" into their second language (Nicodemus & Emmorey 2013), in contrast to spoken language bilinguals' preference for translating "backward" into their first language (Seleskovich, 1976). The typical bilingual preference for backward lexical translation is modeled by Kroll and Stewart (1994) who showed that forward translation uses slower conceptual mediation and backward translation uses faster lexical mediation, but this asymmetry alone fails to explain signed language bilinguals' forward preference. Prior attempts to explain these conflicting patterns for signing vs. non-signing bilinguals based on the prevalence of iconicity …
Cross-Linguistic Functions Of Complement Clauses In Oral Monologic Texts, Lindsay Morrone
Cross-Linguistic Functions Of Complement Clauses In Oral Monologic Texts, Lindsay Morrone
Linguistics ETDs
Complement relations are widely identified as a type of subordination, which is traditionally defined as the combination of an independent clause and a dependent clause. A complement clause is traditionally defined as a dependent clause that refers to an event or proposition functioning as an argument of a main clause. This study takes a non-traditional, functional-typological view of subordination and complement relations following the Asymmetry Assumption (Cristofaro 2003, cf. Langacker 1991). From this perspective, subordination is an asymmetrical relation between functionally-linked states of affairs (SoAs) such that the profile of one overrides the other. Complement relations are those in which …
Governing Through Malaria: Biopolitics, Health Discourses, And Mining/Border Communities In Post-Colonial Suriname, Javier Eli Astorga
Governing Through Malaria: Biopolitics, Health Discourses, And Mining/Border Communities In Post-Colonial Suriname, Javier Eli Astorga
Latin American Studies ETDs
This research work investigated how emerging health discourses on malaria are revamping colonial legacies and turning them into structural violence in contemporary Suriname. By critically surveying the colonial past and ongoing post-colonial transitioning in Suriname, using a biopolitics-theory approach and recent medical anthropology to depict health discourses and structural violence, and tapping on the field of Critical Discourse Analysis as ethnomethodology, thirteen medical reports--issued from 2010 to 2014--were examined in order to demonstrate how a discourse of exclusion, inequality, and 'social wrong' endures colonial violence in post-colonial Suriname. Throughout the examination of these contentious medical reports produced by operative medical …
Engendering Peace And Justice After Armed Conflict: A Call For Qualitative Research Among Women's Community Networks, Jennifer Moore
Engendering Peace And Justice After Armed Conflict: A Call For Qualitative Research Among Women's Community Networks, Jennifer Moore
Faculty Scholarship
Transitional justice refers to a variety of mechanisms established to help postconflict societies account for the war and build the peace, including war crimes tribunals, truth and reconciliation commissions, and reparations programs. The framework of transitional justice, while responsive to local actors and local realities, was largely constructed by external actors, including foreign states, international organizations, non-governmental agencies, advocates, and academics working in the fields of human rights and rule of law promotion. The gender dilemma for global and local transitional justice practitioners is the increasing awareness that most women in war-affected countries have not been well-served by the considerable …
State Constitutional Law As A Basis For Federal Constitutional Interpretation: The Lessons Of The Second Amendment, D. Bruce Black, Kara L. Kapp
State Constitutional Law As A Basis For Federal Constitutional Interpretation: The Lessons Of The Second Amendment, D. Bruce Black, Kara L. Kapp
New Mexico Law Review
This Article advocates that courts should rely more heavily on an underappreciated method of constitutional interpretation: reference to parallel state constitutional text and jurisprudence. This article is novel insofar as it develops a normative argument for why courts should consult state constitutions in interpreting the meaning of the federal constitution. To illustrate the value of this method for jurists who ascribe to various judicial philosophies, the authors apply this method to the U.S. Supreme Court’s newly developed Second Amendment jurisprudence. While District of Columbia v. Heller provides some guidance in interpreting the Second Amendment under the Court’s new framework, many …
Femmage And The Diy Movement: Feminism, Crafty Women, And The Politics Of Gender Performance, Rosemary L. Sallee
Femmage And The Diy Movement: Feminism, Crafty Women, And The Politics Of Gender Performance, Rosemary L. Sallee
American Studies ETDs
Through a variety of lenses, contemporary crafting is examined as a complex and contradictory gender and class performance that serves as a form of communication among women that both enables and contains oppositional and gender role explorations. Crafting is created through myriad texts which transform into an individual form of expression, a societal spectacle, a fashion trend, a subculture, an addiction, a coping mechanism, an oppositional act, and a means of healing both physically and emotionally. This study investigates how the objects women make and collect reflect and define crafters' negotiations between personal desires and public personas, help them voice …
Discourse On Gender, Religion, And Culture In Pakistani Films: A Narrative Analysis Of Contemporary Independent Films From Pakistan, Mohib Rehman
Communication ETDs
This thesis examines the discourse about gender, religion, and culture in four independent films produced in Pakistan between 2000 and 2013 to advocate for women's empowerment: Silent Water and Good Morning Karachi from female director Sabiha Sumar, and In the Name of God and Speak from male director Shoaib Mansoor. I analyzed plot, characterization, dialogues, and visual images to discuss how the filmmakers represented the dynamics of women's oppression, struggle against oppressive agents, and options or solutions for women's empowerment. Further, this project explored the ideological implications of the narratives constructed in the films within the Pakistani society in the …
Chinese De Constructions In Secondary Predication: Historical And Typological Perspectives, You-Min Lin
Chinese De Constructions In Secondary Predication: Historical And Typological Perspectives, You-Min Lin
Linguistics ETDs
This dissertation investigates the history of Chinese DE [tə] constructions in light of the typology of secondary predication. A secondary predicate, such as hot in He drank the tea hot, is a predicate that provides subsidiary information to a substructure (the participant tea) of the more salient primary event (drank). Mandarin DE features in two strategies: (i) a DE-marked primary event elaborated by a predicate following it, and (ii) a DE-marked secondary predicate preposed to the primary predicate. Focusing on Late Medieval Chinese (7th to mid-13th c.), the study examines the evolution of the DE-marked strategies from three distinctive constructions: …

Promoting Efl Learning Outside The Classroom Through The Use Of Web-Based Technologies After The Adoption Of Blackboard In A Saudi University, Ahmed Saad Al Shlowiy
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Many Saudi universities recently have used different technologies including a learning management system (LMS) to establish their blended learning systems. Faculty and students are encouraged to use online resources in their courses. I was interested in learning if English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers used Blackboard as a LMS to promote English learning outside the classroom and to extend limited opportunities of using English in Saudi Arabia. This study is important for EFL teaching and learning because it describes how web-based learning platforms are used to promote learning of English. It also sheds light on the teachers' approaches, suggestions, …

Language, Power, And Ideology In High School Efl Textbooks In Saudi Arabia, Abdullah Al Jumiah
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Using critical discourse analysis (CDA) as a research method, I investigated in the present study the discursive intersections between language and ideology with respect to social power and identity in two high school English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) textbooks in Saudi Arabia. Specifically, I critically analyzed how social power and identity based on gender and race were discursively represented in these EFL textbooks. I also critically examined how banking education and neoliberalism as a western political and socioeconomic ideology shaped the content of these EFL textbooks. The results indicate that the overt and hidden discourses in the EFL textbooks I analyzed serve as …

Adding Debriefing To Objective Structured Clinical Examinations To Enhance Disability Cultural Sensitivity In Pharmacy Students, Mark Smith
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
Debriefing was added to the design of an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) after second-year pharmacy students performed poorly at considering patient disability in planning for patient care. This mixed-methods study examines secondary data to explore whether and how the addition of a debriefing to an OSCE impacted pharmacy students' cultural sensitivity (CS). CS scores that rate students' consideration of disability in written SOAP notes improved significantly with the addition of debriefing. Overall performance of assessing the case and planning for care did not change significantly. Debriefing transcripts were examined for supplemental instruction they afforded students about patient care and …
Plato's Orpheus: The Philosophical Appropriation Of Orphic Formulae, Dannu Hütwohl
Plato's Orpheus: The Philosophical Appropriation Of Orphic Formulae, Dannu Hütwohl
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
In this project I explore Platos deployment and transposition of Orphic eschatological ideas through his incorporation of Orphic formulae, based on the Olbian Tablets and Orphic Gold Tablets, into his philosophical settings throughout his dialogues. I show how Plato deploys Orphic formulae throughout his dialogues in order to promote his philosophy, which points to Plato's knowledge of Orphic doctrine. First I analyze Plato's use of specific terminology and formulae in eschatological contexts. Then I look specifically at the Orphic term poinē in terms of the Orphic myth of Dionysus. I contend with the arguments of Edmonds who redefines the Greek …
Cultural Competency In The Dental Hygiene Curricula: A Survey, Christina Calleros
Cultural Competency In The Dental Hygiene Curricula: A Survey, Christina Calleros
Dental Hygiene ETDs
As the population of the nation becomes more diverse, dental hygiene programs must ensure graduates are receiving cultural competency training in entry-level educational programs. The purpose of this study was to establish a baseline for what topics of cultural competency training are or are not being incorporated into dental hygiene schools and to determine if differences exist between topics covered amongst the types of degree-granting institutions. Topics were investigated via survey instrument and data was collected from 76 U.S dental hygiene program directors. Results of this study emphasized the similarities between entry-level dental hygiene programs and illustrated a lack of …

Expanding Your Cognitive Capacity: An Assessment Of The Neuroplastic Changes Associated With Mindfulness Training And Transcranial Stimulation, Michael Hunter
Psychology ETDs
Given that mindfulness-based training techniques (MBT) stimulates and pushes ones core cognitive control capacity limits, brain stimulation techniques, such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), can be used to facilitate the ongoing neural patterns of functional connectivity toward long-lasting neuroplastic change. The current study assessed the combined effects of MBT with right frontal tDCS on cognitive control abilities and their corresponding brain patterns of activation using electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This study found an enhancement in working memory and sustained attention performance along with changes in the attention-related P3 component and its theta and alpha oscillatory …
