History In The Service Of Politics: A Reassessment Of G. G. Gervinus, Charles E. Mcclelland
History In The Service Of Politics: A Reassessment Of G. G. Gervinus, Charles E. Mcclelland
History Faculty Publications
Gervinus's political and scholarly position in nineteenth-century Germany deserves re-examination. Gervinus was a more complicated figure than some of his recent East German champions allege and a much more interesting scholar than his dismissive contemporaries believed. He was a historian too radical to hold a teaching chair but too popular with his readership to be ignored, and a more and more vociferous Cassandra in an age of increasing accommodation to and optimism about Bismarckian power. Gervinus's life was a passion in the service of democratic liberalism; as a result, he suffered during his life, and his reputation has suffered ever …
An Historical Analysis Of Motivations And Contributions Attributed To Selected Medical Doctors In Physical Education, Robert W. Pearson
An Historical Analysis Of Motivations And Contributions Attributed To Selected Medical Doctors In Physical Education, Robert W. Pearson
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
A study of the history of physical education in the United States indicated that a common denominator existed in the historical vitae of many of the early leaders. The intriguing facet was that many of these leaders were medical doctors, a point which stimulated further study. The history of a subject helps to illuminate past events, gives depth, breadth, and can add greater perspective to present events. It was hoped that a study of this nature would recognize various unique contributions of early leaders and provide a springboard for future historical studies. This chronicle of the medical backgrounds and contributions …

New Mexico Labor Legislation, 1912-1949, Haven Tobias
New Mexico Labor Legislation, 1912-1949, Haven Tobias
History ETDs
A study of New Mexico labor legislation is a necessity because it fills a void in New Mexico labor history. There is a competent essay analyzing a selection of New Mexico’s labor laws, but it is not comprehensive and therefore lacks substantive statements about or perspective on the development of this legislation. New Mexico labor laws are also occasionally mentioned in studies of state labor legislation, but they are mentioned in catalogue fashion, and therefore serve as aids to the historian, rather than as historical studies per se. These sources do not explore the historical patterns reveled in the intent …

An Historical Study Of School Bonding Practices In The United States With Special Emphasis On New Mexico, Emmett Franklin Shockley
An Historical Study Of School Bonding Practices In The United States With Special Emphasis On New Mexico, Emmett Franklin Shockley
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
Universal free public education has been a dream of some since this nation was founded, and the twentieth century has developed -- at least to this point -- a school society which more than ever before in the history of mankind comes close to attainment of this noble endeavor. While most Americans believe that schools are a good investment and that money for schools yields substantial dividends, public school expenditures will have to be justified in the future more than they ever have been in the past.
The rising sophistication of our society and the increasing leisure time of the …
The Transmountain Diversion Of Water From The Colorado River: A Legal-Historical Study., Kay Collins
The Transmountain Diversion Of Water From The Colorado River: A Legal-Historical Study., Kay Collins
History ETDs
Conflict is the inevitable result of a situation in which there is a large demand for water which is in short supply. And the Upper Basin of the Colorado River today offers no exception to that rule. The Eastern boundary of this Basin is the Continental Divide, meaning that water flowing on the eastern side of the divide will flow into the Atlantic Ocean and that west of it will flow into the Pacific. Each side of the Continental divide is hen divided into different river basins, the waters of which do not mingle because of the mountain barriers. Water …

A Historical Study Of The Armory Show Of 1913 As A Factor In The Development Of American Art, Jurdan G. Myers
Art & Art History ETDs
For many years lecturers and art historians have been aware of the importance of the Armory Show (The international Exhibition of Modern Art) held in New York in 1913. This awareness has not been sufficient to stimulate the presentation of the entire history of the Armory show. Although most lecturers and art historians dismiss the exhibit by saying that it was important, there are a few who have given as much as ten pages to a discussion of the show.
