The Architecture Of Las Vegas, New Mexico, Louise Harris Ivers May 1975

The Architecture Of Las Vegas, New Mexico, Louise Harris Ivers

Art & Art History ETDs

"The Architecture of Las Vegas, New Mexico" relates historical and social conditions to the consequent construction of buildings. The purpose of this study is to see if the predominant architectural styles of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries prevalent in other parts of America also appear in Las Vegas, and to what extent the town was unique in its architectural habits. By comparing the buildings of Las Vegas to those in both eastern and western towns and cities as well as to the designs in the many architectural pattern books published during the period, one finds both similarities and …

Otello: Rossini - Verdi, Kathryn Eckart Dec 1974

Otello: Rossini - Verdi, Kathryn Eckart

Music ETDs

All art, whether visual, plastic, written, or aural, is experienced and criticized through a process of conscious and unconscious comparison. Trends, advances, and styles exist only in their difference from what has passed before. The study of artistic evolution is sometimes made easier when works with the same subject, such as paintings of the madonna, nude sculpture, architectural style of churches, of settings of the passion, by different artists and from different periods can be compared. The similarity of treatment of subject matter or the lack of it in contrasted artists or periods often provides a basis for the beginnings …

I'Ll Take My Stand: The Southern Segregation Academy Movement, Margaret Rose Gladney

American Studies ETDs

This study examines as a social and historical movement the development of segregation academies -- the private, all white elementary and secondary schools founded in the South for the purpose of avoiding public school integration since the Supreme Court's 1954 school desegregation ruling. Chapter I begins by describing the development of Claiborne Academy, the segregation academy in my home town of Homer, Louisiana, in order to establish my relationship to the subject. The chapter describes the nature of the primary research, interviews with state and regional administrators who are leaders in the Southern Independent School Association, and principals, teachers, and …

Berlin Historians And German Politics, Charles E. Mcclelland Jan 1973

Berlin Historians And German Politics, Charles E. Mcclelland

History Faculty Publications

By the dawn of the twentieth century, German historians, like "the German academic community as a whole, had fallen into the role of a vaguely conservative and decidedly official establishment." The last third of the nineteenth century had seen the triumph of Prussia over the academic world as well as the political communities of the German lands, with the cultural policy and impulses of Berlin deeply influencing the direction of German historiography and political thought. This influence took the form of an accommodation of power and idealism rather than a purge of the universities, which were the undisputed home of …

Naval Construction And Repair At San Blas, Mexico, 1767-1797, Malcolm Hall Kenyon

History ETDs

This thesis is a technical-historical study of ship construction and repair performed at the Royal Shipyard of San Blas in the Spanish colony of New Spain in the years 1767-1797, covering the entire official life-span of the establishment. The writer establishes preliminary technical bases for the conversion of eighteenth-century Spanish volumes, weights, and linear measures into the modern English system and discusses in detail the techniques necessary for converting ship tonnages. A chronological framework is established for the history of the shipyard, taking into consideration principal geographical, climatological, and environmental influences. A study of the means of production is made, …
