BACKGROUND: Many Veterans Health Administration primary care providers (PCPs) have small female patient caseloads, making it challenging for them to build and maintain their women's health (WH) knowledge and skills. OBJECTIVE: To perform a formative evaluation of the program's development and implementation.

RESEARCH DESIGN: We used mixed methods including participant surveys, semi-structured interviews, stakeholder meeting field notes, and participation logs. We conducted qualitative content analysis for interviews and field notes, and quantitative tabulation for surveys and logs.

SUBJECTS: Veterans Health Administration WH PCPs. …

BACKGROUND: Medical errors are frequently encountered by trainees but there is currently no standard curriculum for educating residents about medical errors. Morning report is a case-based peer-facilitated conference in which residents learn concepts in general internal medicine. We used our standard Chief Resident facilitated morning report to enhance resident learning about medical errors. PURPOSE: Evaluate house staff experiences with medical errors and to facilitate resident discussion, understating and reporting of medical errors using a morning report format. DESCRIPTION: Our Quality Chief Resident designed and led a 50-minute morning report by selecting 3 cases of medical errors that had occurred recently …

Telepain: A Community Of Practice For Pain Management, Alexa R. Meins, Ardith Z. Doorenbos, Linda Eaton, Debra Gordon, Brian Theodore, David Tauben

Project ECHO Bibliography

INTRODUCTION: Comprehensive pain management services are primarily located in urban areas, limiting specialist consultation opportunities for community healthcare providers. A community of practice (CoP) for pain management could create opportunities for consultation by establishing professional relationships between community healthcare providers and pain management specialists. A CoP is a group of people with a common concern, set of problems, or a passion for something they do. Members of a CoP for pain management increase their knowledge of evidence-based pain management strategies in a way that is meaningful and relevant. In this article, we provide evidence that TelePain, an interdisciplinary, case-based pain …

How The Über-Wealthy Benefit From Investing Outside Retirement Plans (And How You Can Too), Sergio Pareja

Faculty Scholarship

Current law incentivizes the use of traditional retirement plans, but those plans may not actually produce the best long-term tax situation for the taxpayer. The stepped-up basis at death does not apply to what is known as “income in respect of a decedent” (IRD). Generally, IRD is income that cannot be assigned from one person to another for income tax purposes. This includes pre-tax income set aside in a traditional employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k) plan, as well as contributions to a deductible individual retirement account (IRA). Thus, stock held within a traditional employer-sponsored retirement plan or a …
