Farmers’ Perception Of Climate Change And Willingness To Pay For Weather-Index Insurance In Bahunepati, Nepal, Wenmei Guo, Alok Bohara

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

This paper is a pioneering study of investigating effects of farmers’ perception of climate change on their willingness to pay (WTP) for a weather-index crop insurance in Nepal. We use contingent valuation data collected from a primary household survey conducted in Bahunepati, Nepal to examine the topic. The research improves on the previous literature by analyzing two crop insurance products which incorporate both crop and livestock.

Schooling Infrastructure And Educational Outcomes In Nepal, Vinish Shrestha, Animesh Giri Oct 2015

Schooling Infrastructure And Educational Outcomes In Nepal, Vinish Shrestha, Animesh Giri

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

We estimate the impact of an increase in the number of schools on educational outcomes in Nepal. We combine the between-district differences in number of new schools with variation in exposure to these schools created by the virtue of individuals being of school-age. Our results and back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest that on average the increase in the number of schools can explain about a third of the total differences in the reading and writing abilities for the treated and control groups of women. These results underscore the continued importance of increasing access to schooling in developing countries like Nepal.

Balance Of Power, Domestic Violence And Health Consequences: Evidence From Demographic And Health Survey Of Nepal, Soumi Chowdhury, Alok Bohara, Brady Horn

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

A large literature studying Domestic Violence (DV) has documented a complex relationship between intimate partner violence, domestic risk factors, women empowerment and health outcomes. In this paper we attempt to disentangle this complex relationship using data drawn from Nepal Demographic and Health Survey, 2011. Empirically, a two-equation system is estimated, where the first equation models the relationship between domestic violence and health outcomes (physical injuries) whereas the second equation models the relationship of domestic violence to domestic risk factors and women’s empowerment. The study finds evidence that both education and cooperative environments lessen the likelihood of violence. Additionally, a number …

Labor Market Changes And Human Capital Investment: Evidence From Migration Boom In Nepal, Rashesh Shrestha Oct 2015

Labor Market Changes And Human Capital Investment: Evidence From Migration Boom In Nepal, Rashesh Shrestha

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Economic theory suggests that schooling decisions are motivated by returns to education and opportunity cost. In a rapidly changing economic context, changes in returns to education can significantly influence schooling decisions. Migrating to the resource-abundant Gulf countries in short-term contracts represent an additional, and often the most lucrative, labor market option for many young individuals in South Asian developing countries. However, most of these jobs do not tend to demand high education qualifications. This paper studies whether access to low-skilled jobs in construction and service sector led to a reduction in schooling investment. Utilizing the Nepal Census data and instrumental …

Funding The Costs Of Disease Outbreaks Caused By Non Vaccination, Robert L. Schwartz Oct 2015

Funding The Costs Of Disease Outbreaks Caused By Non Vaccination, Robert L. Schwartz

Faculty Scholarship

While vaccination rates in the United States are high – generally over 90 percent – rates of exemptions have been going up, and preventable diseases coming back. 2014 is shaping to be one of the worst years for measles since 1994, with outbreaks generally starting from unvaccinated individuals and affecting primarily the unvaccinated. While pertussis is a more complex story, communities with high rates of exemptions are more vulnerable to outbreaks. Aside from their human cost and the financial cost of treatment imposed on those who become ill, outbreaks impose financial costs on an already burdened public health system, diverting …

You Gotta Fight For The Right To Vote: Enfranchising Native American Voters, Jeanette Wolfley Oct 2015

You Gotta Fight For The Right To Vote: Enfranchising Native American Voters, Jeanette Wolfley

Faculty Scholarship

Five decades ago, the Congress passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Since its passage, the Voting Right Act has created the opportunity to vote for many racial and language minorities across the country, and has survived many challenges until 2013. The U.S. Supreme Court issued two decisions involving voting rights in its 2012-2013 term. On June 25, 2013, in Shelby County v. Holder, a divided Supreme Court struck down Section 4 - a key provision of the 1965 Voting Right Act (VRA) - as unconstitutional. On June 17, 2013, one week before the Shelby County decision, the Court decided …
