Ruptures Of The Quadriceps And Patellar Tendons Of The Extensor Mechanism: A Review, Judd R. Fitzgerald Jan 2016

Ruptures Of The Quadriceps And Patellar Tendons Of The Extensor Mechanism: A Review, Judd R. Fitzgerald

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Damage to the quadriceps and patellar tendons of the extensor mechanism can be devastating and often life-changing injuries that require prompt diagnosis and treatment. A sound understanding of anatomy, biomechanics, and degenerative changes of both tendons and the extensor mechanism of the knee can help guide surgical repair and postoperative rehabilitation of patients. Immediate primary repair has often resulted in improved postoperative results compared with delayed reconstruction, and the avoidance of gap formation by use of careful techniques and augmentation has been critical for successful treatment. Additionally, patients with extensor mechanism injuries frequently have medical comorbidities or notable tendon degeneration; …

Diagnosis Of Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome In A 19-Year-Old Collegiate Football Player Owing To A Routine Clinical Visit: A Case Report, Andrew D. Ashbaugh, Fernando J. Tondato, Christopher A. Mcgrew Jan 2016

Diagnosis Of Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome In A 19-Year-Old Collegiate Football Player Owing To A Routine Clinical Visit: A Case Report, Andrew D. Ashbaugh, Fernando J. Tondato, Christopher A. Mcgrew

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is a heart disorder characterized by an additional electrical pathway from the atria to ventricular chambers and episodes of tachycardia. Although the incidence of WPW is relatively low, the pre-excitation syndrome can result in sudden cardiac death, with a higher prevalence noted in younger patient populations. We present a 19-year-old male collegiate football player in whom WPW syndrome was diagnosed during a checkup at a sports-medicine clinic for a rash on his back. Radiofrequency ablation resulted in successful treatment of WPW syndrome, and the patient gradually returned to increasing levels of sports-related activity. Orthopaedic physicians should be …

Arizona Water Law: A Parched Public Interest, Janet M. Howe Jan 2016

Arizona Water Law: A Parched Public Interest, Janet M. Howe

Law of the Rio Chama

Water is an essential and increasingly scarce resource in the west. Such scarcity has revealed the importance of considering the public interest in allocating water rights. Many states, including Arizona, apply the doctrine of prior appropriation to allocate water rights. Arizona, through the Arizona Department of Water Resources, is statutorily required to review all water allocations with the public interest and welfare in mind during its initial appropriation of water rights. However, in reality, the majority of Arizona surface water has already been initially appropriated--increasing the popularity of severance and transfer agreements to change the use of water. Arizona's water …

Recurring Issues In Indian Gaming Compact Approval, Kevin Washburn Jan 2016

Recurring Issues In Indian Gaming Compact Approval, Kevin Washburn

Faculty Scholarship

Achieving agreement between a state and a tribe, and then achieving ratification of that agreement through state and tribal legislative processes, are challenging endeavors. Failing to account for the need for federal approval can undermine the entire negotiation process. The purpose of this article is to highlight several recurring problem areas that can place compact approval at risk. These include the requirement in IGRA that a compact avoid issues that are not germane to gaming, that the compact avoid regulating Class II gaming, which is beyond state authority, and the requirementthat the state avoid expanding its reach over ancillary services and spaces …

Oil & Gas Drilling In National Parks, Elizabeth Ann Glass Geltman

Natural Resources Journal

While a great deal of public attention addresses the Halliburton loophole of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and Bureau of Land Management efforts to regulate hydraulic fracturing on public lands, less attention has been paid to the National Park Service “9B Regulations,” which provide a national regulatory framework governing the exercise of oil and gas rights in national parks. This article begins with a review of law pertaining to oil and gas drilling in national parks. The article examines the tension in striking a balance between environmental protection, conservation of national lands, and achieving energy independence, including National Park …

Negotiating Cultural Spaces In An International Mobile And Blended Learning Project, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena, Agnieszka Palalas, Nicole Berezin, Caitlin Legere, Gretchen Kramer, Godwin Amo-Kwao

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper explores the cultural spaces that had to be negotiated by a team of North American and Ghanaian partners when designing, developing and implementing a mobile and blended learning solution to train physician assistants in Ghana. In addition, it examines how these cultural spaces correspond to five mobile and blended learning spaces: temporal, physical, transactional, technological and pedagogical. Employing qualitative narrative inquiry and paradigmatic analysis procedures, we analyzed six types of data to determine the cultural spaces that emerged. Results indicate that cultural spaces were most often negotiated in the transactional mobile and blended learning space and included: identity …
