Relationally Constructing Sexual Identity: The Effect Of Friendship Networks On Same-Sex Sexuality Development, Alena Kuhlemeier

Sociology ETDs

Drawing upon social network and sexual identity literature, this study investigates the extent to which social integration can influence the development of non-normative sexuality. Existing literature demonstrates the significance of social support in predicting health outcomes. This study seeks to broaden existing understandings of the importance of friendships to encompass their influence on identity development among adolescents questioning their sexual identity. Specifically, this study uses logistic regression to analyze data from two waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Logistic analyses examine the interactive effects of adolescent same sex attraction and each of three distinct friendship network variables …

Cultivating Community: Political Identity And Civic Agriculture Among Small-Scale Organic Farmers In North Central New Mexico, Rose Elizabeth Rohrer

Sociology ETDs

Little work has been done exploring the sociological experiences of individuals working in organic agriculture, a type of farming primarily characterized by rigorous restrictions on chemical inputs. Unlike the massive corporate farms that have become commonplace in much of the United States, farms in North Central New Mexico tend to be small and diverse, with a political focus on community-building. In this study, thirty in-depth interviews of ten producers/owners and twenty farmworkers on organic farms in the region were conducted over the course of the 2014 growing season. I use the interview data to examine how small-scale farm work and …

The Effect Of Biofilm Carrier Length On Nitrification In Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors: An Examination Of Mixing Intensity, Shock Loadings, And Ph Changes, Kody Garcia

Civil Engineering ETDs

Biofilms grown on free-floating attachment surfaces, as in integrated fixed film activated sludg (IFAS) and moving bed bioreactors (MBBRs) are commonly used in wastewater treatment, but little is known about how media geometry affects the biofilms and process performance. The objective of this study was to compare nitrification and growth of biofilms grown on different length media in bench-scale MBBRs. The carriers were cut from high density polyethylene tubing with one media type one-third the length of the other, but with inner and outer diameter dimensions identical. Each bioreactor was continuously operated with coarse bubble aeration and provided with a …

Analysis, Implementation And Considerations For Liquid Crystals As A Reconfigurable Antennas Solution (Licras) For Space, Derek Doyle Feb 2016

Analysis, Implementation And Considerations For Liquid Crystals As A Reconfigurable Antennas Solution (Licras) For Space, Derek Doyle

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The space industry has predominantly relied on high gain reflector dish antenna apertures for performing communications, but is constantly investing in phase array antenna concepts to provide increased signal flexibility at reduced system costs in terms of finances and system resources. The problem with traditional phased arrays remains the significantly greater program cost and complexity added to the satellite by integrating arrays of antenna elements with dedicated amplifier and phase shifters to perform adaptive beam forming. Liquid Crystal Reflectarrays (LiCRas) offer some of the electrical beam forming capability of a phased array system with the component and design complexity in …

On the tenth anniversary of the Tsunami on December 26, 2014, Sri Lankan newspapers highlighted the issues that still prevail in Peraliya and other tsunami affected regions in Sri Lanka such as unresolved housing problems, displacement from homes near the ocean, poor infrastructure, and loss of livelihood (Hussain, December 26, 2014, p. AA1), and at the same time commemorated “the resilience of hundreds of thousands of men, women and children who rose from the debris and the carnage, picked up the pieces and soldiered on amidst the tears and the pain” (Editorial, Sunday Times, December 21, 2014, p. 12). A …

Using Student Feedback To Enhance Teacher Evaluation, Douglas Wine Feb 2016

Using Student Feedback To Enhance Teacher Evaluation, Douglas Wine

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Teacher evaluation literature presents a history that reflects the increasing need to account for the role of the teacher in the classroom. Extensive research has identified a series of best teaching practices but not a means to know in what context they work best, nor why they do not work for some students. Recently, student surveys provide a snapshot into teacher practices as well. This study held student conversations with underachieving and high achieving students to seek answers to the following two questions: What perspectives can students provide about what influences their achievement in the classroom? How do students perceptions …

Siete Lenguas: The Rhetorical History Of Dolores Huerta And The Rise Of Chicana Rhetoric, Christine Beagle Feb 2016

Siete Lenguas: The Rhetorical History Of Dolores Huerta And The Rise Of Chicana Rhetoric, Christine Beagle

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation is first an historical trajectory of Chicana Rhetoric in the American polis and then a perspectival analysis of three key texts from Chicana labor rights activist and vice president of the United Farm Workers Union Dolores Huerta. The trajectory establishes an efficacious legacy of Chicana Rhetoric and the analyses of Huerta's rhetoric explore what Chicana Rhetoric is and is not through the lens of media, scholarly, and personal rendition. I argue throughout that Chicana Rhetoric is representative of current intersections in social, political, racial, and gender rhetorics and Dolores Huerta is the embodiment of these intersections. The implications …

Data-Driven Bayesian Method-Based Traffic Crash Driver Injury Severity Formulation, Analysis, And Inference, Cong Chen Feb 2016

Data-Driven Bayesian Method-Based Traffic Crash Driver Injury Severity Formulation, Analysis, And Inference, Cong Chen

Civil Engineering ETDs

Traffic crashes have resulted in significant cost to society in terms of life and economic losses, and comprehensive examination of crash injury outcome patterns is of practical importance. By inferring the parameters of interest from prior information and studied datasets, Bayesian models are efficient methods in data analysis with more accurate results, but their applications in traffic safety studies are still limited. By examining the driver injury severity patterns, this research is proposed to systematically examine the applicability of Bayesian methods in traffic crash driver injury severity prediction in traffic crashes. In this study, three types of Bayesian models are …

Supporting A School Community In Technology Knowledge And Use To Benefit Student Success, Joseph D. Escobedo Feb 2016

Supporting A School Community In Technology Knowledge And Use To Benefit Student Success, Joseph D. Escobedo

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The use of technology is a growing part of the educational environment inside and outside of the classroom. In addition, all of the actors in a school community, families, teachers, and community members, play a role in the academic success of students. The convergence of the use of technology and the increased role of community in student success is important for educators and policymakers to understand. The deeper understanding of how all the actors in a school community can work together is nothing new, but it is how these actors participate and support technology initiatives through collective impact that makes …

Complicating Transgender: White Privilege And The Politics Of Rurality, Jordon Johnson Feb 2016

Complicating Transgender: White Privilege And The Politics Of Rurality, Jordon Johnson

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation argues a dominant transgender narrative manifested through a focus on transgender bodies and prioritizing access to medical procedures when personal stories began to be publicly shared. With limited public conversations about the influence of a dominant transgender narrative, public understandings about the community have become isolated to one facet of some peoples lived experiences. Focusing on the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico, I examine the ways in which white privilege and presumptions about rural life as in certain respects antithetical to a transgender community have shaped the predominant representation of transgender in ways that often obscure the …

Use Of Chemical And Isotopic Signatures To Distinguish Between Uranium Mill-Related And Naturally Occurring Groundwater Constituents At The Bluewater Disposal Site, Curtis Mchaley

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Uranium mining and milling in the Grants Mining District (GMD) in northwestern New Mexico resulted in environmental impacts on the areas soil, stream sediments, surface water and groundwater. The Bluewater mill, a predominant mill within the GMD, disposed of tailings in unlined tailings piles causing widespread groundwater contamination. This study utilized Uranium-234/Uranium-238 (234U/238U) isotopic ratios in conjunction with chemical and other isotopic data from the Bluewater uranium mill area to discriminate between uranium-mill derived groundwater contamination and groundwater with no known anthropogenic influence and to better understand the interaction of groundwater movement among the alluvial aquifer and adjacent San Andres …

Predicting Activation Of Experiments Inside The Annular Core Research Reactor, Joseph Greenberg Feb 2016

Predicting Activation Of Experiments Inside The Annular Core Research Reactor, Joseph Greenberg

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

The objective of this thesis is to create a program to quickly estimate the radioactivity and decay of experiments conducted inside of the Annular Core Research Reactor (ACRR) at Sandia National Laboratories and eliminate the need for users to write code. This estimation is achieved by using MCNP to model the neutron fluxes in the reactors central cavity where experiments are conducted using one of the four possible neutron spectra available in the ACRR. The desired neutron spectrum, experiment material composition, and reactor power level are then input into CINDER2008 burnup code to obtain activation and decay information for every …

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

Needs and Objectives The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community is a diverse group that, despite recent progress, continues to face health disparities. With 3.4% of US adults identifying as LGBTQ, healthcare providers have a duty to recognize their unique needs [1]. Negative outcomes are as diverse as the community, ranging from young gay men being twice as likely to be hypertensive as their straight peers [2] to lesbian women receiving very rare or no cervical cancer screening [3]. The 2011 Institute of Medicine report on LGBTQ health identified lack of provider knowledge as one of the foremost …

Periprosthetic Fractures Of The Femur After Total Hip Arthroplasty And Hemiarthroplasty: A Review, Reilly R. Kuehn

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Periprosthetic fractures of the femur after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and hemiarthroplasty represent relatively uncommon but challenging complications. The incidence of these types of fractures has been rising, owing to an increasing number of hip arthroplasties performed, aging population, and prevalent use of uncemented stems, which may have unsuccessful long-term results compared with use of cemented stems. Method of treatment has been generally based on the Vancouver classification system that describes radiographic characteristics of fractures and stability of the femoral stems in respect to placement in the bone. In particular, the presence of loose stems has often indicated the need …
