Development Of Oligo(P-Phenylene Ehynylene)(Ope) Applications Against Chemical And Biological Threats, Suhyun Yoon

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Four new applications of oligo-phenylene ethynylene (OPE) and poly-PE (PPE) compounds for detection and destruction of biological and chemical threats have been investigated. Mixed surfaces composed of PPEs and a thermoswitchable polymer were created, and were shown to be able to capture, kill, and reversibly release pathogenic bacteria. In order to develop fluorescent sensors for CW agents, the spectral changes of OPEs with surfactants and malathion (a simulant for nerve agents) were measured. Formation of OPE-dimers in the presence of surfactants can cause fluorescence enhancement (turn-on) or quenching (turn-off). Among six positive and negative OPEs, only OPEs with ethyl ester …

Design, Fabrication And Characterization Of Phononic Crystals In Macro And Micro Scale, Mohammadhosein Ghasemi Baboly Jul 2016

Design, Fabrication And Characterization Of Phononic Crystals In Macro And Micro Scale, Mohammadhosein Ghasemi Baboly

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

In many areas of engineering such as telecommunications industry, lenses and optical cooling, waveguiding and the ability to control wave propagation is necessary. Phononic Crystals (PnCs) influence the propagation of mechanical waves by their periodic variation in elastic impedances. Depending on Lattice type and inclusion's spacing, one can manipulate the frequencies that are blocked or allowed to transmit through the crystal in a particular direction. In this work, two dimensional PnCs plates are design and also numerically and experimentally demonstrated. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was performed to study the dispersion behavior and eigenmodes of a PnC. The simulations show the …

Whatever Happened To The Mexican Oil Bonanza? The Challenges Of Mexico’S New Oil Fund, Paul Alejandro Sánchez Campos

Natural Resources Journal

From 2000 to 2014, Mexico exported around 9 billion barrels of oil equivalent—representing approximately $562 billion dollars (USD) in revenues—yet in December 2014, the remnant sum in the Oil Revenues Stabilization Fund was just $2.9 billion USD. This article analyzes the Mexican oil revenue management scheme used in this period, using evidence to analyze various explanations of how the Mexican oil revenues were used between 2000 and 2014 and to evaluate the institutional strength of the new Mexican Oil Fund for facing challenges in the near future.

Shale Gas: Opportunities And Challenges Between Mexico And The United States, Mariana Y. Villanueva González Jul 2016

Shale Gas: Opportunities And Challenges Between Mexico And The United States, Mariana Y. Villanueva González

Natural Resources Journal

Would it be it better for Mexico to remain a net importing partner of natural gas from the United States or to encourage its own Mexican Gas Revolution? Mexico has an estimate 545 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of shale natural gas reserves, and trillions of additional cubic feet of conventional reserves. Nevertheless, the country has remained a net importer of natural gas due to underdevelopment. Meanwhile, shale gas production on the other side of the border has increased significantly over the past decade, causing United States gas prices to drop. Due to its close proximity to the major shale field …

Advancing The Food-Energy-Water Nexus: Closing Nutrient Loops In Arid River Corridors, Jacob Mortensen

Civil Engineering ETDs

Closing nutrient loops in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems is integral to achieve resource security in the food-energy-water (FEW) nexus. Multiyear (2005-08), monthly samples of instream dissolved inorganic nutrient concentrations (NH4-N, NO3-N, soluble reactive phosphorus-SRP) along a ~300-km of the Rio Grande, NM, USA were used to investigate how the net source/sink behavior of wastewater and irrigated agriculture can be holistically managed to close nutrient loops. Wastewater on average contributed over 90% of the instream dissolved inorganic nutrients (101 kg/day NH4-N, 1097 kg/day NO3-N, 656 kg/day SRP). During growing seasons, the irrigation network downstream of wastewater outfalls retained on average 37% …

Un/Desirable Subjects: South Asian Racialization In The Age Of Terror, Santhosh Chandrashekar Jul 2016

Un/Desirable Subjects: South Asian Racialization In The Age Of Terror, Santhosh Chandrashekar

Communication ETDs

This dissertation examines South Asian racialization in the United States after the 9/11 attacks. Using a comparative racialization framework, it proposes South Asian racialization as entangled with neo-orientalism, anti-Blackness, and settler colonialism which Andrea Smith (2006, 2012) has called the three pillars of white supremacy and undergirded by heteropatriarchy. An examination of the Oak Creek shooting and the discourses surrounding it demonstrated that neo-orientalism rendered Sikh Americans as interchangeable with Muslims by constituting them as 'Muslim-looking' (Ahmad, 2004), even as it coerced the former to instantiate their difference from Muslims through an aggressive performance of heterosexual patriotism and by reducing …

User Experiences Of Regret While Engaging With Social Media, Kimberly Oostman Jul 2016

User Experiences Of Regret While Engaging With Social Media, Kimberly Oostman

Communication ETDs

Social media offers users the ability to participate with a social network of others in a process of sharing and fellowship, presenting an impression of self and the ability to monitor constructed expressions. Recent studies examining the ritual view of communication, impression management, self-regulation, and self-reflective capabilities show each of these plays a role when using certain social media sites. However, a research gap exists regarding the use of any social media and the perspectives of young adult users during the scenario of experiencing regret as the result of engaging with social media. The study is a mixed-methods exploratory study …

Critical Intercultural Dialogue: Discourse Analysis Of Context, Intersectionality, And Reflexivity In Undergraduate Conversations, Erin Watley Jul 2016

Critical Intercultural Dialogue: Discourse Analysis Of Context, Intersectionality, And Reflexivity In Undergraduate Conversations, Erin Watley

Communication ETDs

Intercultural conflicts continue to persist for numerous reasons. The groups involved remain polarized, individuals tend to primarily concentrate on defending their own point of view, or solutions concentrate on individual actions instead of the consequences perpetuated by complex social systems. The communicative behaviors that often accompany intercultural conflicts also frequently work to sustain them, helping those who are involved to perpetuate dominant narratives and marginalizing social systems in ways in which they are both active and complicit. In this study Critical Discourse Analysis was used to examine the ways that undergraduate students discussed and conceptualized intercultural conflicts during their involvement …

New Land Use And Water Policy Geographies In Emerging Cannabis Markets: The Case Of Pueblo County, Colorado, Jason Adam Kikel Jul 2016

New Land Use And Water Policy Geographies In Emerging Cannabis Markets: The Case Of Pueblo County, Colorado, Jason Adam Kikel

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Voters and legislatures throughout the country are winding down the War on Drugs and legalizing marijuana for medical and retail use. While many regulatory decisions are made at state capitals nationwide, the marijuana landscape is largely shaped by local authorities exercising influence through land use planning. Over a decade after passing a voter-initiated medical marijuana program, Colorado voters approved a State Constitutional Amendment fully legalizing marijuana for adult use. The "Regulate Marijuana like Alcohol Act of 2012" made Colorado the first state to legalize the sale, taxation, and possession of marijuana through a commercial market. Local governments were given the …

Engendering Peace And Justice After Armed Conflict: A Call For Qualitative Research Among Women's Community Networks, Jennifer Moore Jul 2016

Engendering Peace And Justice After Armed Conflict: A Call For Qualitative Research Among Women's Community Networks, Jennifer Moore

Faculty Scholarship

Transitional justice refers to a variety of mechanisms established to help postconflict societies account for the war and build the peace, including war crimes tribunals, truth and reconciliation commissions, and reparations programs. The framework of transitional justice, while responsive to local actors and local realities, was largely constructed by external actors, including foreign states, international organizations, non-governmental agencies, advocates, and academics working in the fields of human rights and rule of law promotion. The gender dilemma for global and local transitional justice practitioners is the increasing awareness that most women in war-affected countries have not been well-served by the considerable …

Coevolving Histories Inside And Out: Phylogenetics, Comparative Parasitology, And Host Affinities Of Chipmunk Sucking Lice And Pinworms, Kayce C. Bell Jul 2016

Coevolving Histories Inside And Out: Phylogenetics, Comparative Parasitology, And Host Affinities Of Chipmunk Sucking Lice And Pinworms, Kayce C. Bell

Biology ETDs

Diversification of parasite species, in light of their host association, is an area ripe for testing hypotheses of evolution when one species requires another for survival. The 23 species of western North American chipmunks (genus Tamias) host two species of ectoparasitic sucking lice (Anoplura) and two species of endoparasitic pinworms (Nematoda). I used a phylogenetic approach to investigate the evolutionary histories of the parasites in light of the hosts and the landscape. In comparing the parasites, I found that the two pinworm species have similar diversification patterns, linked to hosts, but those processes occurred on different time scales. As another …

Patterns In Richness And Community Structure: From Bacteria To Apex Predators, Ara S. Winter Jul 2016

Patterns In Richness And Community Structure: From Bacteria To Apex Predators, Ara S. Winter

Biology ETDs

Patterns of community structure and richness provide context for studies from microbial ecology, global macroecology, languages, to Bayesian statistics. Diversity patterns for animals on land and their predictor variables are well studied. However, diversity patterns for bacterial communities and marine macroorganisms are not well studied or understood. Here I examine diversity patterns in caves, on the external surface of Chiroptera (bats), and in marine ecosystems. At the local to regional scale we investigate factors that drive bacterial community patterns in richness and composition in lava cave microbial mats and microbes on bats. Lastly, out of the cave and into the …

Femmage And The Diy Movement: Feminism, Crafty Women, And The Politics Of Gender Performance, Rosemary L. Sallee

American Studies ETDs

Through a variety of lenses, contemporary crafting is examined as a complex and contradictory gender and class performance that serves as a form of communication among women that both enables and contains oppositional and gender role explorations. Crafting is created through myriad texts which transform into an individual form of expression, a societal spectacle, a fashion trend, a subculture, an addiction, a coping mechanism, an oppositional act, and a means of healing both physically and emotionally. This study investigates how the objects women make and collect reflect and define crafters' negotiations between personal desires and public personas, help them voice …

Governing Through Malaria: Biopolitics, Health Discourses, And Mining/Border Communities In Post-Colonial Suriname, Javier Eli Astorga Jul 2016

Governing Through Malaria: Biopolitics, Health Discourses, And Mining/Border Communities In Post-Colonial Suriname, Javier Eli Astorga

Latin American Studies ETDs

This research work investigated how emerging health discourses on malaria are revamping colonial legacies and turning them into structural violence in contemporary Suriname. By critically surveying the colonial past and ongoing post-colonial transitioning in Suriname, using a biopolitics-theory approach and recent medical anthropology to depict health discourses and structural violence, and tapping on the field of Critical Discourse Analysis as ethnomethodology, thirteen medical reports--issued from 2010 to 2014--were examined in order to demonstrate how a discourse of exclusion, inequality, and 'social wrong' endures colonial violence in post-colonial Suriname. Throughout the examination of these contentious medical reports produced by operative medical …

State Constitutional Law As A Basis For Federal Constitutional Interpretation: The Lessons Of The Second Amendment, D. Bruce Black, Kara L. Kapp Jul 2016

State Constitutional Law As A Basis For Federal Constitutional Interpretation: The Lessons Of The Second Amendment, D. Bruce Black, Kara L. Kapp

New Mexico Law Review

This Article advocates that courts should rely more heavily on an underappreciated method of constitutional interpretation: reference to parallel state constitutional text and jurisprudence. This article is novel insofar as it develops a normative argument for why courts should consult state constitutions in interpreting the meaning of the federal constitution. To illustrate the value of this method for jurists who ascribe to various judicial philosophies, the authors apply this method to the U.S. Supreme Court’s newly developed Second Amendment jurisprudence. While District of Columbia v. Heller provides some guidance in interpreting the Second Amendment under the Court’s new framework, many …
