Brief For The American Association On Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities (Aaidd), And The Arc Of The United States As Amicus Curiae, James W. Ellis, Ann M. Delpha, Carol M. Suzuki, Steven Homer, David Stout, April Land

Faculty Scholarship

As with any field of scientific inquiry, our understanding of the condition of intellectual disability is improved and enhanced over time by continuing, rigorous study and analysis. The scientific study and the diagnosis of intellectual disability involve issues important to scholars and clinicians. But amici believe that there is no need for this Court to become enmeshed in the details and intricacies of those scholarly efforts in order to resolve the instant case and to provide guidance to lower courts in their task of fairly adjudicating cases under Atkins v. Virginia, 536 U.S. 304 (2002). This Court need only affirm …

Perceptions Of Reversible And Permanent Contraception In India, Neha Rani Bhardwaj Jul 2016

Perceptions Of Reversible And Permanent Contraception In India, Neha Rani Bhardwaj

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Background: In 1951 India became the first country to launch a national family planning program focused on promoting reversible and permanent contraception including financial incentives for both method acceptors and providers. Despite governmental provision of the copper intrauterine device (IUD), oral contraceptive pills (OCP) and condoms at no cost, most Indian women choose permanent sterilization after completing childbearing. Whether the predominance of sterilization stemmed from Indian men and women’s desire for permanent contraception, from deficient knowledge and access to reversible methods, from public health messages and established norms, or from coercion in the form of incentives is unknown. Objectives: The …

Cumulative Impact: Digital Ethnography Of Environmental Activism In The Mountain View Community, Nina Cooper Jul 2016

Cumulative Impact: Digital Ethnography Of Environmental Activism In The Mountain View Community, Nina Cooper

Communication ETDs

While digital ethnography is a growing genre in communication, there is a salient need to fill the gaps of knowledge concerning health communication using a digital format. Digital ethnography holds the potential of reaching larger audiences, incorporating more stakeholders, and adding previously muted voices – individuals from non-academic communities as well as communities of color – to health research dialectics. With limited use of this tool in the field of health communication, there remain untapped opportunities for intra-disciplinary work within the communication field (e.g., ethnography, performance ethnography, critical ethnography) and beyond. By combining ethnography and community-based participatory research as theoretical …

The Influence Of Beaver Activity On Modern And Holocene Fluvial Landscape Dynamics In Southwestern Montana, Rebekah Levine Jul 2016

The Influence Of Beaver Activity On Modern And Holocene Fluvial Landscape Dynamics In Southwestern Montana, Rebekah Levine

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Beaver dams effectively trap sediment in stream channels, leading to the hypothesis that persistent beaver damming on millennial timescales causes valley floor aggradation. The available field data, however, are inconclusive. I investigated modern and Holocene beaver-related deposition to understand beaver contributions to fluvial dynamics on multiple timescales in one stream system. Field investigations were conducted on Red Rock and Odell Creeks at Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, Centennial Valley, Montana, documenting patterns of sediment storage at 4 stages of beaver damming in the modern channel (1) active; (2) transition from active to breached; (3) breached within the last decade; …

Place, Imaginary, Identity: Place Ethnography In Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico, Tita Berger Jul 2016

Place, Imaginary, Identity: Place Ethnography In Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico, Tita Berger

American Studies ETDs

"Place for me is the locus of desire," writes Lucy Lippard in the opening to Lure of the Local (1997). This research project is about place. Two distinct sets of scholarship on place emerged in the 1970s and the 1990s. A third wave of place scholarship is evident today. Coming initially from geography and anthropology, the study of place is now ubiquitous across fields in history, cultural studies, architecture, planning, health sciences, art and other disciplines. Despite the sustained interest in the study of place, one of the hallmarks of place is the ranging and contested contours of what place …

Computer-Aided Quantitative Early Diagnosis Of Diabetic Foot, Viktor Chekh Jul 2016

Computer-Aided Quantitative Early Diagnosis Of Diabetic Foot, Viktor Chekh

Computer Science ETDs

Diabetes is an incurable metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels. The feet of people with diabetes are at the risk of a variety of pathological consequences including peripheral vascular disease, deformity, ulceration, and ultimately amputation. The key to managing the diabetic foot is prevention and early detection. Unfortunately, current hospital centered reactive diabetes care and the availability of inadequate qualitative diagnostic screening procedures causes physicians to miss the diagnosis in 61% of the patients. We have developed a computer aided diagnostic system for early detection of diabetic foot. The key idea is that diabetic foot exhibits significant neuropathic …

Avalanche Isfet Sensing Chip For Dna Sequencing, Mohammad Uzzal Jul 2016

Avalanche Isfet Sensing Chip For Dna Sequencing, Mohammad Uzzal

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

DNA sequencing is a fundamental tool for biological science, aimed primarily at uncovering the genetic contributions to diseases. The first Human DNA sequence, which employed conventional fluorescent-based Sanger Sequencing method, took many years to complete at a cost of over three billion dollars. In one survey, it shows that Human Genome Project (HGP) had generated more than $67 billion in U.S. economic output, $20 billion in personal income for Americans and 310 thousand jobs in USA, only during year 2010. The HGP has increased the need for high-throughput, low cost, fast, accurate and inexpensive DNA sequence technique. This demand has …

Decolonizing The Body: Breast Cancer And The Environment In Toxic Times, Cynthia L. Martin Jul 2016

Decolonizing The Body: Breast Cancer And The Environment In Toxic Times, Cynthia L. Martin

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation explores cultural narratives regarding the relationship between environmental toxins and breast cancer causation. It is not an analysis of current scientific research; grounded in Foucault’s theory of genealogy and archaeology, it evaluates cultural narratives on breast cancer causation that may be subsumed by the mainstream focus upon a cure for breast cancer, overlooking how people with breast cancer perceive illness causation, particularly as it relates to toxic exposure. Theories of place, space, and the neoliberal politics behind biotechnology support understanding the toxification of the human body as neocolonialism, and invite decolonizing methodologies as a means of understanding and …

Questions Of Sovereignty: Pyramid Lake And The Northern Paiute Struggle For Water And Rights, Andrew W. Carey Jul 2016

Questions Of Sovereignty: Pyramid Lake And The Northern Paiute Struggle For Water And Rights, Andrew W. Carey

Anthropology ETDs

The current U.S. government policy of Indian Self-Determination is determined by the principle of tribal sovereignty, which defines how issues identified in Indian Country are addressed. However, tribal sovereignty represents an ideal that has regularly been ignored or contested by private and corporate entities, as well as state and federal government agencies. My research explores this case study of the successful assertion of tribal sovereignty by the Pyramid Lake Paiute tribe as they worked to save Pyramid Lake, the spiritual and economic heart of their reservation. The Pyramid Lake Tribe employed several strategies to secure water for Pyramid Lake and …

Evaluation Of The Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Signaling Pathway As A Therapeutic Target In Human Papillomavirus-Associated Disease, Anastacia Maria Griego

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are the most common sexually transmitted infectious agents. They are responsible for >99% of all cervical cancers as well as subsets of other anogenital cancers. HPVs are also the causative agents of a growing number of head and neck cancers. As such, they present a significant health problem both in the U.S. and developing countries. Much is still unknown regarding the factors underlying progression from HPV infection to cancer or maintenance of viral oncoprotein expression following oncogenic transformation. Previous studies reported significant interplay between the epidermal growth factor (EGFR) pathway and HPV oncoproteins. HPV oncoproteins E5, E6, …

Investigating Pedestrian Crash Risk In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Rahul Reddy Gade

Civil Engineering ETDs

Walking, being an important and basic form of transportation is crucial in everyday day life. Seen as an alternative to traditional modes of transport, walking is seen as an effective way to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and personal transport. Its health benefits and positive changes to the community are seen as incentives to promote walking as an effective mode of transport. As such, pedestrian safety is of utmost importance given the increase in pedestrian numbers and correspondingly, pedestrian crashes. The thesis studies pedestrian crash data and computes pedestrian crash rates for different intersections in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Crash rates …

Reclaiming The Land: Indigenous Articulations Of Environmentalism At Bears Ears, Caroline K. Goodman Jul 2016

Reclaiming The Land: Indigenous Articulations Of Environmentalism At Bears Ears, Caroline K. Goodman

American Studies ETDs

This thesis explores how an inter-tribal coalition in Southern Utah is strategically mobilizing environmental ethics in order to guarantee access to tribal homelands. Facing serious threat from Anglo communities in Utah who use race and religion to produce themselves as the authentic local population, the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition forges new kinds of alliances with environmental groups and appropriates conservation and preservation ethics in order to reclaim the land. Indigenous articulations of environmentalism at Bears Ears disrupt the colonial temporal and spatial logics that undergird dominant American imaginaries of wilderness and antiquity, reattaching Native peoples to the land by centering …
