Potentially Inappropriate Prescribing Of Proton Pump Inhibitors Among Older Patients In The Us, Shannon Kindilien, Cheng Chen

Shared Knowledge Conference

The American Geriatrics Society list of Potentially Inappropriate Medication (Beers Criteria) use in older adults (>64-years) includes Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), and specifically cautions against their use for >8 weeks. PPIs are prescribed to reduce the production of stomach acid, however there is strong evidence older adults are at risk of infection and bone loss from prolonged exposure to PPIs. This study used data from the 2017 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) and the FDA Adverse Event Report System (FAERS, as of June 30, 2019) to characterize the current prescribing practices of PPIs to older adults and the risks …

Promoting Social-Emotional Learning Through Physical Activity, Caitlin Olive, Karen Lux Gaudreault, Bryan A. Mccullick, Phillip Tomporowski

Shared Knowledge Conference

Social-emotional learning has become an increasingly popular topic in education as today's students are expected to attend to an exceeding amount of expectations, such as academic achievement, responsible decision making, cooperating with others, and resisting negative tendencies (Elias et al., 1997). SEL is founded on the notion that social-emotional learning and academic achievement are interdependent and should be deliberately taught in order to maximize student learning (Greenberg et al., 2003). Accordingly, CASEL developed guides for implementing district-wide SEL programming to ensure competencies are taught across subject areas (Durlak et al., 2011). SEL programs can occur during the school day or …

Rac1 As A Therapeutic Target In Ovarian Cancer, Melanie Rivera, Martha M. Grimes, Dayna Dominguez, S. Ray Kenney, Yuna Guo, Elsa Romero, Kathryn J. Brayer, Yan Guo, Scott A. Ness, Sarah F. Adams, Carolyn Muller, Laurie G. Hudson

Shared Knowledge Conference

Rac1 is a high value therapeutic target for cancer based on its tumor promoting activities, yet clinical applications targeting Rac1 are in their infancy. High expression and hyperactivation of Rac1 in ovarian cancer, along with our identification of R-ketorolac as a novel Rac1 and Cdc42 selective inhibitor with translational potential, prompt us to test the hypothesis that targeting Rac1 has therapeutic utility for ovarian cancer. Ascites tumor cell samples from ovarian cancer patients in a prospective study receiving racemic ketorolac for clinically indicated use in pain relief were previously reported to show time dependent reduction of Rac1 and Cdc42 activities …

Classifying Livestock Grazing Behavior And Gis-Modeling Potential Cumulative Risks From Exposure To Abandoned Uranium Mine Waste In The Cove Wash Watershed, Arizona, Usa, Zhuoming Liu

Shared Knowledge Conference

Abandoned uranium mines (AUMs) are sources of metals and radioactive substances that are harmful to human health. There are 50 AUMs in the Cove Wash Watershed; as a result, community members are concerned that when domesticated sheep, goat and cattle graze on or near these features they are exposed to harmful substances. Sheep in particular are culturally important and consumption of meat and organs may result in human exposure and potential health impacts. As part of a larger ongoing research project, this thesis examines the geospatial and temporal grazing patterns of domesticated livestock to use GIS to model potential for …

Three themes emerged including (a) mother-teacher communication, (b) particular knowledge that suppressed further desires for inclusive education, and (c) culture-based advocacy for inclusive education. I discussed these findings based on Confucianism, collectivism, social and medical models of disability, and Rawls’s theory of justice. The mothers neither knew about inclusive education laws nor valued the laws. Instead, they …

The Role Of Adaptive Immunity In Chronic Hypoxia-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension, Levi David Maston Nov 2019

The Role Of Adaptive Immunity In Chronic Hypoxia-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension, Levi David Maston

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Inflammation is a prominent pathologic feature in pulmonary arterial hypertension as demonstrated by pulmonary vascular infiltration of inflammatory cells, including T and B lymphocytes. However, the contribution of the adaptive immune system is not well characterized in pulmonary hypertension (PH) caused by chronic hypoxia (CH). Inflammatory cells, through various mechanisms, have the capability to increase pulmonary vascular resistance in various disease states. CD4+T cells have the potential to play a significant role in the disease process initiated by hypoxia. CD4+T cells are largely responsible for orchestrating downstream immune processes and are critical in focusing and amplifying …

How Do Trainers In Empirically Supported Treatments Decide What To Train?: An Investigation Of The Trainer’S Role In The Science-To-Service Pathway, David Pendleton Forman

Psychology ETDs

BACKGROUND: Despite significant progress in identifying empirically supported

elements of psychotherapy treatments over the last 20 years, the integration of these findings into clinical practice remains low. Practitioner training has been identified as a core component of successful translation of scientific findings into practice. Yet, little research has been conducted on the role of the trainer in the dissemination of empirically supported treatments (ESTs). This exploratory study investigated the practices and attitudes of trainers of an EST, Motivational Interviewing (MI), to identify potential factors related to successful and/or unsuccessful dissemination efforts. METHOD: A measure of Motivational Interviewing components (MIC) and …

Sound is one of the types of waves that can be felt by the sense of hearing (ears). In physics, the definition of sound is something that is produced from objects that vibrate. Objects that produce sound are called sound sources. The sound source that vibrates will vibrate the molecules into the air around it. Sound is mechanical compression or longitudinal waves that propagate through the medium. This medium or intermediate agent can be liquid, solid, gas. So, sound waves can propagate for example in water, coal, or air. Most sounds are a combination of various vibratory signals composed of …

Integrating Treatment For Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditions, Amy M Yule, John F Kelly

Project ECHO Bibliography

Given the high co-occurrence between alcohol use disorder (AUD) and mental health conditions (MHCs), and the increased morbidity associated with the presence of co-occurring disorders, it is important that co-occurring disorders be identified and both disorders addressed in integrated treatment. Tremendous heterogeneity exists among individuals with co-occurring conditions, and factors related to both AUD and MHCs, including symptom type and acuity, illness severity, the chronicity of symptoms, and recovery capital, should be considered when recommending treatment interventions. This article reviews the prevalence of co-occurring AUD and MHCs, screening tools to identify individuals with symptoms of AUD and MHCs, and subsequent …

Perpetual Affordability Covenants: Can These Land Use Tools Solve The Affordable Housing Crisis?, Elizabeth Elia Oct 2019

Perpetual Affordability Covenants: Can These Land Use Tools Solve The Affordable Housing Crisis?, Elizabeth Elia

Faculty Scholarship

Approximately 3.8 million privately-owned residential housing units in America today contain affordability covenants recorded in their chains of title. State and local agencies and the District of Columbia use these covenants to ensure that publicly-subsidized properties are actually used to provide affordable housing. With rents at all-time highs and stagnant wages, the affordable housing crisis has reached a fever pitch. House Democrats are proposing billions more in housing subsidy. To the extent those funds subsidize privately-owned housing development they, too, will be secured by affordability covenants. In response to this crisis, a new trend in high cost markets is to …

Faculty Scholarship

The is a Comment on the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Proposed Rule: FR-6111-P-02 HUD’s Implementation of the Fair Housing Act’s Disparate Impact Standard . This comment examines how algorithms in housing applications may be inherently biased against certain groups of people.

Their arguments against the proposed legislation:

1. To ensure that an algorithm does not have disparate impact, it is not enough to show that individual input factors are not “substitutes or close proxies” for protected characteristics.

2. It is impossible to audit an algorithm for bias without an adequate level of transparency or access to the …

Multi-Year Water Quality Data Reveal Highly Variable Timing And Magnitude Of Metabolism And Physicochemical Drivers In An Aridland River Network, Betsy Marie Summers

Civil Engineering ETDs

Streams and rivers process and transport carbon to downstream systems and are important components of global and regional carbon budgets. Ecosystem functions, including gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (ER), can be used to improve understanding of carbon cycling and ecosystem health in lotic systems. Whole-stream metabolism (GPP and ER) has been studied extensively in headwater streams. However, we know less about the variability in GPP and ER in aridland rivers and tributary streams despite being globally abundant and vulnerable systems to changing climate. This dissertation explores temporal and spatial variation of GPP and ER in a montane stream …

Diagnostic Sequence Detection Against A Complex Background Using A Dna Molecular Computation Framework, Adan Leon Myers Y Gutierrez Oct 2019

Diagnostic Sequence Detection Against A Complex Background Using A Dna Molecular Computation Framework, Adan Leon Myers Y Gutierrez

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Diagnostic assays are designed to detect a unique analyte profile in a disease of interest. Nucleic acids contain an information-dense sequence, and thus are ideal candidates for unique analytes. The gold-standard of nucleic-acid-based detection is PCR which has high sensitivity, but involves time, expertise, and cost. DNA molecular logic technology holds much promise as an alternative molecular detection method due to the potential to save cost and expertise, while also achieving a high sensitivity. However, nucleic acid detection in biomedical applications carries with it the difficulty of choice of appropriate sequence and potential biological sample background.

This work describes the …
