An Assessment Of Oral Health Discussion Between Primary Care Providers And Their Patients With Diabetes, Rocio Huizar
Dental Hygiene ETDs
Individuals diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, are not given information regarding the relationship between diabetes and oral health. The purpose of this study was to assess whether primary care providers discuss the association between oral health and diabetes mellitus to their patients with diabetes, if they refer to dental providers and where is oral health ranked in importance during a routine exam.
A secure electronic survey was sent to the Medical Director of the Department of Family and Community Medicine, requesting it be forwarded to providers in each primary care clinical facility. Survey was open for two weeks, ten surveys were …
Backyard Wildlife Refuges In Albuquerque, Nm: An Urban Land Ethic In Practice, Laurel E. Ladwig
Backyard Wildlife Refuges In Albuquerque, Nm: An Urban Land Ethic In Practice, Laurel E. Ladwig
Geography ETDs
In the urban setting, biodiversity conservation requires intentionally creating spaces humans and wildlife can share. An urban land ethic can guide this process. Developing and practicing this ethic requires asking questions that consider approaches from multiple disciplines and avoid anthropocentric framing. Both More-Than-Human and Critical Physical Geography bring multiple knowledges into conversation to make complex realities visible. This project explores these fields of scholarship as guides for reconciling the needs of the land community.
Sharing familiar spaces creates opportunities for developing ethical relationships between humans, non-humans, and natural systems. Wildlife gardening creates habitat in our residential and community areas, providing …

Social Cognitive Predictors Of Academic Success In First-Year College Students, Mary A. Hershberger
Social Cognitive Predictors Of Academic Success In First-Year College Students, Mary A. Hershberger
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
Success in the first year of college is due in part to how well students can adjust to the demands of school and integrate into collegiate life. Social cognitive factors such as self-efficacy relating to college activities, academic resilience, social support, and academic stress may contribute to students’ overall feelings of belonging and academic performance, yet most research does not take into account ways that students may change across the first year of school. Two path models investigated relationships between pairs of predictors on belonging and GPA in fall and spring semesters among 212 first-year college students, also examining differences …

Climate Change Adaptation In Highland Ecuador: Intersections Of Gender, Geography, And Knowledge In Farming Communities, Dinka Natali Caceres Arteaga
Latin American Studies ETDs
This dissertation uses a feminist political ecology perspective to explore the socioeconomic impacts of climate change in Ecuador, especially but not limited to the agriculture sector. It is based on the use of mixed methods that allowed the participation and validation of the local population, surpassing their role as beneficiaries to co-authors of this research.
The significance of this study relies on the position the local population holds in the fields of human geography, under a community local-planning perspective, as they attempted to collaborate in the process of adaptation to climate change by presenting analysis and calculation of an index …

Join With Me, Won't You? Civic Engagement, Covid-19, And The Millennial Generation Of Law Professors, Joseph A. Schremmer
Faculty Scholarship
My goals in this essay are to place legal education’s COVID-19 crisis into this broader context and illuminate the unique opportunity that millennial law professors have to create the conditions for more robust community participation within and outside of our law schools. Part I summarizes the decline of civic engagement and social capital in preceding decades and its consequences for law, public discourse, and quality of life. Part II outlines how this deficit of social capital exacerbates the challenges facing law schools and professors in delivering legal education and constructing community during the coronavirus pandemic. Part III explores the unique …

Total Plasma Volume Determinations For Patients With Potentially Challenging Conditions Requiring Therapeutic Plasma Exchange: Dealer's Choice, Lizabeth Rosenbaum, Mindi Johnson, Marissa Li, Jay S. Raval
Pathology Research and Scholarship
LETTER TO THE EDITORTotal plasma volume determinations for patients withpotentially challenging conditions requiring therapeuticplasma exchange: Dealer's choiceTo the Editor:Determination of total blood volume (TBV) and totalplasma volume (TPV) are essential steps in the process ofinitiating therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE).1Regardlessof the specific disease for which a procedure is to be per-formed, apheresis instruments typically require height, weight, sex, and hematocrit data to calculate TPV. For rou-tine patients, these calculations are generally straightfor-ward to perform and are accurate. However, certainconditions raise the concern of possibly inaccurate TPVdeterminations. These potentially challenging conditionsinclude obesity, pregnancy, and limb amputation. Despitenumerous modifications available to typical TBV and …

Hora De Las Noticias: The Importance Of Spanish- Language News Media For Us Latinos, Barbara Gomez-Aguinaga
Political Science ETDs
This dissertation examines the mechanisms that set Spanish-language (SL) news media apart from mainstream media, and how they influence political behavior and identity among US Latinos. Specifically, it analyzes (1) the role of content coverage of SL news on issue salience, (2) the use of Spanish as a US minority language in the dissemination of information and its effects on Latino identity, and (3) the presence of Latino reporters and its implications on media trust. By leveraging original data collection, including conceptual content analyses and population-based survey experiments, and by engaging in multiple theories from political science and other fields …

Pathology Research and Scholarship
Sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy (SIC) is associated with increased patient mortality. At present, there are no specific therapies for SIC. Previous studies have reported increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mitochondrial dysfunction during SIC. However, a unifying mechanism remains to be defined. We hypothesized that PKCδ is required for abnormal calcium handling and cardiac mitochondrial dysfunction during sepsis and that genetic deletion of PKCδ would be protective. Polymicrobial sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) surgery decreased the ejection fraction of wild-type (WT) mice but not PKCδ knockout (KO) mice. Similarly, WT cardiomyocytes exposed to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) demonstrated decreases in contractility …
Who Decides: Is Water Life Or Capital? Contesting Visions Of Western Water Management In The 21st Century, Ceorl
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
There is an ideological divide between the goal of universal access to clean water and the outcomes of how water regulations are implemented. John Fleck, author of Water is for Fighting Over: and Other Myths about Water in the West and Sivas, et al. in California Water Governance in the 21st Century present contesting prescriptions for Western water management. The ideologies advocated by Fleck and Sivas, et al. differ as to who enacts and profits from each and exemplify the divide between the goals of water regulations and how they are implemented. Fleck regards water as property and an economic …

In Part I of this essay I interpret this unique moment in history through a retelling of the folk story La Llorona in order to identify the monsters and ghosts of the past and the present. Domino Renee Perez describes her own critical reflection of La Llorona as reinforcing 'a valuable lesson about power and authority' because her family’s 'storytelling circle was more than simply an arbitrary setting; it was a safe place for them to create, however problematically, a world of words, where they faced the dangers and challenges of life, embodied by a woman, and survived.' The lore …
