Nurse educators across New Mexico are teaching nursing course content online and are looking for fun ways to build community and engagement with learners. During 2020, the author has been investigating different online tools to share with nurse educators across the twelve New Mexico Nursing Education Consortium (NMNEC) nursing programs. After learning about the Bitmoji classrooms being utilized by K-12 educators, the author became curious about whether Bitmoji classrooms could be useful for nursing education. To trial this, the NMNEC (Bitmoji) Office was created for the 2020 Fall Virtual NMNEC Statewide Faculty Meeting and utilized as a way of sharing …

COVID-19 took the world by storm and left UNM medical students with plenty of extra time on their hands. With countless new opportunities for growth, students were able to go back to old hobbies or pick up new ones. For students who love to read, it can be difficult to find the time to get through a book with scholarly duties and deadlines looming ahead. With the uncertainty that the pandemic brought upon us, students who missed reading for pleasure had time to delve into an alternate reality and immerse themselves in the serenity of a good book. An organized …

Traditional medical education focuses on the science of medicine through lectures and clinical rotations. Yet, the art of medicine—learning compassion and empathy—and certain aspects of professional development may be best taught in other forms. Indeed, participation in The Maine Humanities Council Literature & Medicine Program led to 82% of participants self-reporting increased levels of empathy for patients. Further, incorporation of book clubs into the Pharmacy education at Purdue University led to students exploring new topics, reconsidering previously held perceptions, and better understanding of patient perspectives. In line with this, the New Mexico American College of Physicians (NMACP) Diversity, Equity and …

The AAMC recommended in March 2020 that medical schools suspend medical student involvement in clinical activities due to CoVid. In response, UNM SOM implemented a 4-week virtual course on COVID-19 for second- and third-year medical students and PA students. The course addressed the need for students to learn about public health, infectious disease, and social determinants of health. In addition, the new course provided ample opportunity for community service. The objectives of the course were lofty, but critical at this point in the students’ medical education. We wanted our students to develop leadership skills, learn about the novel Coronavirus, anticipate …

Teaching during a pandemic calls for some restructuring of traditional in-person classes and a great deal of creativity. The amount of time that students are spending online has increased dramatically, and with that comes an increased effort to keep students engaged. The traditional case study is a great teaching tool but it can be difficult to manage in a large classroom, and requires a specific progression to answer all the questions. A segmented unfolding case study is one option. Each student group is given a portion of the patient’s story along with critical thinking questions. This allows for the class …

The U.S. Census Bureau predicts that Hispanic, Black and other minority groups will constitute more than half of the U.S. population by 2044. It is therefore problematic that only about 10% of images in dermatology textbooks illustrate dermatologic conditions in dark skin. This paucity of adequate resources has affected physicians’ education and patient outcomes. A study several years ago found 47% of dermatologists and residents reported that their medical training on pathologies in Black skin was insufficient, and that there was a need for more training materials exhibiting Black skin. Black and Hispanic patients are also less likely to be …

BACKGROUND: Rho-family GTPases, including Ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate 1 (Rac1) and cell division control protein 42 (Cdc42), are important modulators of cancer-relevant cell functions and are viewed as promising therapeutic targets. Based on high-throughput screening and cheminformatics we identified the R-enantiomer of an FDA-approved drug (ketorolac) as an inhibitor of Rac1 and Cdc42. The corresponding S-enantiomer is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with selective activity against cyclooxygenases. We reported previously that R-ketorolac, but not the S-enantiomer, inhibited Rac1 and Cdc42-dependent downstream signaling, growth factor stimulated actin cytoskeleton rearrangements, cell adhesion, migration and invasion in ovarian cancer cell lines and …

While current treatment regimens for acute leukemia can dramatically improve patient survival, there remains room for improvement. Due to its roles in cell differentiation, cell survival, and apoptotic signaling, modulation of the cyclic AMP (cAMP) pathway has provided a meaningful target in hematological malignancies. Several studies have demonstrated that gene expression profiles associated with increased pro-survival cAMP activity or downregulation of various pro-apoptotic factors associated with the cAMP pathway are apparent in acute leukemia patients. Previous work to increase leukemia cell intracellular cAMP focused on the use of cAMP analogs, stimulating cAMP production via transmembrane-associated adenylyl cyclases, or decreasing cAMP …

Opioid use disorder (OUD) and opioid overdose are growing problems. Opioid vaccines are a novel treatment approach for OUD, but current vaccine strategies are slow to elicit antibodies and require multiple immunizations. Here, we report our efforts to engineer opioid vaccines that could elicit high-titer, long-lasting antibodies with a single dose. We used bacteriophage Q beta virus-like particles (VLPs) as a platform to display oxycodone in a highly immunogenic format. Opioid drugs of interest were chemically modified to include a short peptide linker (G-G-G- G-C). This allowed for the chemical conjugation of the opioid drugs to the surface of the …

Pyramidal neurons from medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) project into striatum, thalamus, hypothalamus, and went as far as dorsal raphe nucleus (midbrain) and locus coeruleus (pons). Neural activity in mPFC is reciprocally modulated by monoamine systems arising in these distant brain regions: noradrenergic, dopaminergic and serotonergic. By deregulating these systems genetically, we previously reported that functional projections from mPFC are similarly regulated by these monoaminergic systems using brain-wide tracing based on manganese-enhanced magentic resonance imaging (MEMRI) followed by statistical parametric mapping (SPM). Here we report that a single experience of acute threat alters mPFC projections in wild type mice, and this …

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy represents a major public health problem. Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) disrupts the Central Nervous System (CNS) development inducing long lasting behavioral and cognitive alterations collectively known as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs). It is well established that alcohol affects different cellular targets, but the molecular mechanisms underlying these problems are not still understood. Our previous data reported a significant impairment in orbitofrontal cortex (OFC)-mediated reversal learning (Marquardt et al., 2014b), and an altered firing of OFC pyramidal neurons (Marquardt et al., 2020). Considering that N-Methyl-D-Aspartate receptors (NMDARs) are altered in rodent models after prenatal alcohol exposure …

Background:
Tauopathies are progressive neurodegenerative disorders characterized by the hyperphosphorylation of tau and development of intracellular neurofibrillary tangles, collectively referred to as pathological tau (pTau). It is becoming increasingly recognized that the development and spread of pTau accurately predicts and correlates with clinical progression in human tauopathy patients, however there are no FDA-approved drugs that target and reduce pTau. Previously, our lab has developed a virus-like particle (VLP)-based vaccine using a Qß (RNA bacteriophage) platform to multivalently display a 13-mer pTau peptide, with phospho-Thr181 (pT181, a well-established CSF biomarker for tauopathies). pT181-Qß generates a robust and targeted immune response against …
