Covid-19 has been shown to cause placental changes such as microcalcifications, increased fibrin, and …
Heterogeneity In Hosts And Environment: Implications For Schistosomiasis Control, Larissa Celeste Anderson
Heterogeneity In Hosts And Environment: Implications For Schistosomiasis Control, Larissa Celeste Anderson
Biology ETDs
Schistosomiasis is a widespread neglected parasitic disease, endemic in 54 countries, for which 290 million people needed treatment in 2018. A major Schistosoma species, Schistosoma mansoni, is sustained via a life cycle that includes both human and snail hosts. Mathematical models of S. mansoni transmission are an integral tool for elucidating the complexities of the transmission cycle, interactions between parasite species and for the estimation of the impact of intervention efforts. We designed both deterministic and stochastic mathematical models to understand the impact of heterogeneity in host and parasite composition on projected infection control. These models indicate the impact of …

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
It was previously hypothesized that endurance exercise training blunts the hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) response to acute exercise. We investigated whether training status influences the skeletal muscle HIF-1 response to acute exercise. 7 endurance athletes and 8 untrained controls performed a bout of cycling exercise. Skeletal muscle protein levels of HIF-1α and its inhibitors, prolyl hydroxylase 2 (PHD2), factor inhibiting HIF (FIH) and von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) were measured pre, post and 3h post-exercise. HIF-1 target gene expression was assessed via rtPCR and RNA-sequencing. Baseline protein levels of FIH and PHD2 were greater in the trained group. The exercise-induced increase …

Development Of A Low-Cost Efficient Wireless Intelligent Sensor For Strain (Lewis-S) And Applications In Measuring Nonlinear Dynamics, Eric Robbins
Civil Engineering ETDs
Nonlinearities exist in all real-life systems and can be caused by behaviors such as large deformations, yielding, contact, etc. which can result in phenomena not found in linear testing. Considering nonlinear behavior in dynamic analyses can be beneficial to increase model predictability and can accurately characterize system responses. Generally, accelerometers are commonly used in linear and nonlinear vibration testing to obtain the acceleration response of a system. However, some systems may render the use of accelerometers problematic, or accelerometers may introduce limitations to measurement capabilities such that it can be beneficial to obtain experimental data using different sensors. In the …

Automl For Anomaly Detection Of Time Series And Sequences Of Short Text, Cynthia Freeman
Automl For Anomaly Detection Of Time Series And Sequences Of Short Text, Cynthia Freeman
Computer Science ETDs
Automated approaches for parameter and algorithm selection greatly democratize fields such as machine learning, saving time and money as hiring experts can be prohibitively expensive. Unfortunately, anomaly detection is difficult to automate due to subjectivity and class imbalance. An anomaly detection system is presented that incorporates human-in-the-loop techniques and is dynamic, scalable, and able to work with non-annotated data. By focusing on meta-features of the input data, the system can intelligently choose the most promising anomaly detection methods. The system is agnostic to the medium of data; it only expects the data to be sequential in nature.

Sex Differences In Running Performance: The Role Of The Anaerobic Speed Reserve In Female Middle-Distance Running, Lydia Charlotte Hallam
Sex Differences In Running Performance: The Role Of The Anaerobic Speed Reserve In Female Middle-Distance Running, Lydia Charlotte Hallam
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Middle-distance running is an interesting domain in which to study sex differences in athletic performance because of the varied metabolic, mechanical and tactical demands. The Anaerobic Speed Reserve (ASR) represents the difference between an athlete’s maximal sprint speed (MSS) and maximal aerobic speed (MAS). The ASR and MSS are key determinants of elite male 800m performance (Sandford et al., 2018); however, the role of the ASR in female middle-distance running is unclear, considering sex differences in physiology, mechanics and competition factors. We found that sub-groups of female middle-distance runners could be distinguished using the ASR and speed reserve ratio (SRR …

Currently, over one-third of the global population is infected with tuberculosis (TB), one of the world’s most deadly infectious diseases. The current gold standard for TB diagnosis is microbiological culture, which can take up to 6-8 weeks, which is not conducive to timely treatment. There are no reliable diagnostics for TB. Disease manifestation and outcome of diagnostic tests for TB are influenced by co-morbidities such as HIV co-infection, further complicating diagnostics development. Thus, there is a need for reliable diagnostics for TB. This is especially true in pediatric populations where the differential disease presentation further complicates outcomes.

A Quantitative Investigation Of Ovarian Cancer Disparities, Jimmy Valdes
Sociology ETDs
Ovarian cancer is the fifth most deadly form of cancer, and the leading cause of death among gynecologic malignancies in US women. Although this literature has empirically investigated parts of this phenomenon, several major gaps exist. First, this literature rarely attempts to theoretically contextualize the findings by explaining broader etiologies of ovarian cancer. It also does not attempt to explain how or why the social determinants of ovarian cancer disparity, primarily socioeconomic status and race, may be interrelated. Lastly, few studies have attempted to better understand the distinct ways in which Hispanics, as an ethnic group, fit into the ovarian …
