Effects Of Message Frame And Cultural Orientations On Covid-19 Prevention Behaviors, Mika Hashimoto May 2021

Effects Of Message Frame And Cultural Orientations On Covid-19 Prevention Behaviors, Mika Hashimoto

Communication ETDs

This study aimed to explore effective message strategies to promote COVID-19 prevention behaviors among college students. Due to the fewer symptoms and lessened impact of COVID-19 in this population, young adults tend to have low perceived risk that results in low engagement in preventive behaviors. Also, some people may hold beliefs or values that are contrary to preventive behaviors. Thus, applying message framing theory, this study tested the effects of perceived risk and cultural orientation on adherence to prevention behaviors. The results showed that perceived risk and cultural orientation were associated with intention to maintain physical distance and wearing a …

Hbme1 And Ck19 Expression In Non-Invasive Follicular Thyroid Neoplasm With Papillary-Like Nuclear Features (Niftp) Vs Other Follicular Patterned Thyroid Lesions, Qandeel Sadiq, Radhika Sekhri, Daniel T Dibaba, Qi Zhao, Shweta Agarwal

Pathology Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Thyroid neoplasms with follicular architecture can have overlapping morphologic features and pose diagnostic confusion among pathologists. Various immunohistochemical stains have been investigated as potential diagnostic markers for PTC, among which HBME1 and CK19 have gained popularity. Non-invasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP) poses similar diagnostic challenges with interobserver variability and is often misdiagnosed as adenomatoid nodule or follicular adenoma. This study aims to evaluate expression of HBME1 and CK19 in NIFTPs in comparison to other well-differentiated thyroid neoplasms and benign mimickers.

METHOD: Seventy-three thyroid cases diagnosed over a period of 3 years at Methodist University Hospital, …

Attitudes Towards Treating Injured Patients In Urgent Care, Erin Beverly May 2021

Attitudes Towards Treating Injured Patients In Urgent Care, Erin Beverly

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

There has been published literature on the topic of clinician bias and the effects of bias on patient care, however, a review of the literature did not yield any research on the topic of clinician bias towards treating patients injured in motor vehicle accidents (MVA’s). There has been concern about clinicians not preferring to see patients injured in MVA’s however this is only anecdotal. If this topic is to be addressed through quality improvement efforts, there should first be scholarly evidence to support these efforts. This study employed a prospective survey of a convenience sample of clinicians who practice in …

Stripped And Exploited Blackness: Black Nude Men In The Art Of F. Holland Day And John Singer Sargent, David P. Saiz

Art & Art History ETDs

Black representation in late-nineteenth to early-twentieth-century U.S. art and visual culture is primarily dominated by racist depictions produced by white elite (usually male) artists. Exploiting Black male nude subjects in their art production, F. Holland Day and John Singer Sargent are inextricably tied to this complicated legacy. For Day, his African series featuring U.S.-born model, J.R. Carter, extracts the subject from his time and place to present him as an exotic African subject/object. On the other hand, Sargent encounters Black Bahamian laborers at Miami’s Villa Vizcaya where he then documents his subjects in watercolor as bathers in the surrounding subtropical …

Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) are a genetically heterogeneous group of disorders with a broad clinical spectrum. Identification of molecular and functional bases of these disorders is important for diagnosis, treatment, and an understanding of the human immune response. We identified 6 unrelated males with neutropenia, infections, lymphoproliferation, humoral immune defects, and in some cases bone marrow failure associated with 3 different variants in the X-linked gene TLR8, encoding the endosomal Toll-like receptor 8 (TLR8). Interestingly, 5 patients had somatic variants in TLR8 with

El Paso Segundo Barrio Muralism: Barrio History, Memory, And Identity In Community Artwork, Eduardo García

Chamisa: A Journal of Literary, Performance, and Visual Arts of New Mexico and the Greater Southwest

The border city of El Paso, Texas has a longstanding tradition of muralism in one of its oldest neighborhoods- the downtown Segundo Barrio. Though these manifestations have not received as much scholarly attention as other borderland muralist traditions, they echo a similar theme of community artwork focused on sociohistorical issues, cultural memory, and barrio identity relevant to their geopolitical space. Through a study of mural artists and programs in the downtown El Paso area, I view the use of specific iconography and themes as expressions of Segundo Barrio history, memory, and identity. These artists have continued a lineage of …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether extremely low gestational age neonates (ELGANs) randomized to erythropoietin have better or worse kidney-related outcomes during hospitalization and at 22-26 months of corrected gestational age (cGA) compared with those randomized to placebo.

STUDY DESIGN: We performed an ancillary study to a multicenter double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial of erythropoietin in ELGANs.

RESULTS: The prevalence of severe (stage 2 or 3) acute kidney injury (AKI) was 18.2%. We did not find a statistically significant difference between those randomized to erythropoietin vs placebo for in-hospital primary (severe AKI) or secondary outcomes (any AKI and serum creatinine/cystatin C values …

Games People Played: The Social Role Of Gambling In The Prehispanic U.S. Southwest, Marilyn B. Riggs

Anthropology ETDs

This study examines the social role of gambling in the prehispanic U.S. Southwest. Many of the games recorded by ethnographers in the Southwest involved gambling, and game pieces resembling these examples have been found in archaeological sites. Settlement strategies in the Ancestral Puebloan Southwest changed through time, with periods of increasing aggregation and inter-cultural contact, two conditions that required mechanisms to facilitate successful interactions among multiple kin groups and between multiple culture groups.

Two Models explore the possibility that gambling served an integrative role in large, aggregated pueblos, and in pueblos located on the eastern frontier of the Pueblo region. …
