Wearable activity trackers (WATs) hold great promise in increasing physical activity among older cancer survivors. However, older cancer survivors who reside in rural regions are at increased risk of being digitally marginalized. The goal of this study was to learn about WATs adoption motivation and needs of rural older cancer survivors who live in New Mexico, one of the most rural states with the lowest broadband Internet connectivity in the United States. We conducted six key informant interviews and recruited 31 older cancer survivors from rural counties statewide who participated in interviews and focus groups. Our results show great interest …

Background Recent evaluation of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) mortality demonstrates disproportionate disease burden within the United States. However, there are few contemporary data on US children living with acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and RHD. Methods and Results Twenty-two US pediatric institutions participated in a 10-year review (2008-2018) of electronic medical records and echocardiographic databases of children 4 to 17 years diagnosed with ARF/RHD to determine demographics, diagnosis, and management. Geocoding was used to determine a census tract-based socioeconomic deprivation index. Descriptive statistics of patient characteristics and regression analysis of RHD classification, disease severity, and initial antibiotic prescription according to community …

Towards Creating Smart Cities In Nepal, Ambika P. Adhikari, Keshav Bhattarai

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Many urban centers in the world are seeking to become smart cities. Nepali city leaders are also aspiring to make their cities smart. A smart city basically has clever improvements made in three sectors of its operations: technological, human, and institutional. Globally, many cities have recently made impressive enhancements in at least one or more of these areas. Nepal’s National Planning Commission (NPC) in 2016 had released a concept paper on smart cities for Nepal, defining smart cities as sustainable, information and technology-based, with high quality services and replicable (NPC 2016). As most Nepali cities still operate with limited infrastructure, …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Pathogenic New World orthohantaviruses cause hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), a severe immunopathogenic disease in humans manifested by pulmonary edema and respiratory distress, with case fatality rates approaching 40%. High levels of inflammatory mediators are present in the lungs and systemic circulation of HCPS patients. Previous studies have provided insights into the pathophysiology of HCPS. However, the longitudinal correlations of innate and adaptive immune responses and disease outcomes remain unresolved. This study analyzed serial immune responses in 13 HCPS cases due to Sin Nombre orthohantavirus (SNV), with 11 severe cases requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment and two mild cases. We …

The Emerging Role Of Suppressors Of Cytokine Signaling (Socs) In The Development And Progression Of Leukemia, Esra'a Keewan, Ksenia Matlawska-Wasowska Aug 2021

The Emerging Role Of Suppressors Of Cytokine Signaling (Socs) In The Development And Progression Of Leukemia, Esra'a Keewan, Ksenia Matlawska-Wasowska

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Cytokines are pleiotropic signaling molecules that execute an essential role in cell-to-cell communication through binding to cell surface receptors. Receptor binding activates intracellular signaling cascades in the target cell that bring about a wide range of cellular responses, including induction of cell proliferation, migration, differentiation, and apoptosis. The Janus kinase and transducers and activators of transcription (JAK/STAT) signaling pathways are activated upon cytokines and growth factors binding with their corresponding receptors. The SOCS family of proteins has emerged as a key regulator of cytokine signaling, and SOCS insufficiency leads to constitutive activation of JAK/STAT signaling and oncogenic transformation. Dysregulation of …

Venezuelan migration to neighboring countries in the area is a phenomenon that has been growing in recent years. Ecuador is one of the main countries where migrants who leave Venezuela have gone to reside. They initially arrived in the country as a transit to reach other countries, however, over time many of them decided to settle in Ecuador permanently. Venezuelan migration in our country presents certain characteristics, such as the youth of those who arrive, the high educational level, and the motivation for economic improvement that prompted them to emigrate at first and in a second wave for family reunification. …

Obesity is a chronic, non-contagious disease to which attention has been paid worldwide at all times, but current studies are focused on childhood and adolescent obesity after the Covid-19 pandemic. The reason lies in the fact that the younger the child, the greater the risk of developing complications during his life. That is why it is established as a problem to be analyzed from various points of view. Consequently, this study aims to develop a causal analysis of the determinants of childhood and adolescent obesity in post-COVID-19 Ecuador using Neutrosophic Cognitive Maps from a hermeneutical point of view. Exploratory research corresponds to the first approach of investigative work. This type of research is very useful by allowing researchers to have a first approach or a first idea about the subject to study and will be of great help to become familiar with the method, but without providing conclusive results. It is usually carried out when the problem is in a preliminary phase. It is a process of collecting basic information on a problem that is not clearly defined. It is a very flexible technique, which implies that the researcher is willing to take risks, be patient and receptive. …

In recent decades, the development of techniques that allow continuous or periodic blood pressure measurement, both systolic and diastolic, in different individuals has shown that it experiences spontaneous variations in 24 hours. The variability of blood pressure has been calculated based on the standard deviation, and it has been possible to determine that this, with significant differences between individuals, behaves in such a way that the systolic pressure is higher than the diastolic. It has also been reported that the fluctuation is more significant in hypertensive patients than in normotensive patients, as the level of indeterminacy exists. Control charts, as …
