Evaluation Of Thermal Infrared Imaging From Uninhabited Aerial Vehicles For Arboreal Wildlife Surveillance, Blair Mirka Nov 2021

Evaluation Of Thermal Infrared Imaging From Uninhabited Aerial Vehicles For Arboreal Wildlife Surveillance, Blair Mirka

Shared Knowledge Conference

An important component of wildlife management and conservation is monitoring the health and population size of wildlife species. Monitoring the population size of an animal group can inform researchers of habitat use, potential changes in habitat and the resulting behavioral adaptation, individual health, and the effectiveness of conservation efforts. Arboreal primates are difficult to monitor as their habitat is often poorly accessible and most primate species have some degree of camouflage, making them hard to observe in and below the tree canopy. Surveys conducted using uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with thermal infrared (TIR) cameras can help overcome these limitations …

Land, Society, And Justice: Reframing Geoscience Education Through A Storied Anti-Colonial And Environmental Justice Lens, Cameron Reed Nov 2021

Land, Society, And Justice: Reframing Geoscience Education Through A Storied Anti-Colonial And Environmental Justice Lens, Cameron Reed

Shared Knowledge Conference

Geoscience has been paramount to the transformation and advancement of society, fundamentally changing the way we view, interact, and live with the surrounding natural and built environment. It is important to recognize the value and importance of this interdisciplinary scientific field while reconciling its ties to imperial and colonizing extractive systems which have led to harmful and invasive endeavors. To prevent future injustices and resolve inequalities in colonized communities, the future of geosciences must be pushed in a new direction and be framed through a decolonial, and anti-colonial, lens where possible. Additionally, geology and its tangential studies in geosciences must …

Possible Answers To Future Water Scarcity, Catherine Heyne Nov 2021

Possible Answers To Future Water Scarcity, Catherine Heyne

Shared Knowledge Conference

Urban communities around the world are grappling with the challenges associated with population increases, drought, and projected water shortages. With a substantial global shortfall between water supply and demand expected by 2030, water planning strategies must adapt to a new reality characterized by higher temperatures and less precipitation, requiring new ways of thinking about water management, use, and governance. Commonplace strategies such as water conservation and nonpotable water reuse might not be sufficient to adequately stretch water supplies in water-scarce parts of the industrialized world. In the United States, planned potable water reuse (i.e., purification of domestic wastewater for reuse …

Verification testing following a maximal graded exercise test (GXT) has been shown to be effective at indicating whether VO2max was attained for middle-aged and older adults but performing two maximal efforts in a single day may not be practical or possible for certain individuals. PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of a regression method for identifying a VO2 plateau in order to confirm the attainment of VO2max. METHODS: Twenty-one recreationally active (VO2max: 21.8-50.3 ml/kg/min) middle-aged and older (46-76 yrs.) men (n=11) and women (n=10) completed an individualized ramp GXT on the cycle ergometer, and one hour later, a verification protocol at …

"We're Such A Small Community": A Qualitative Study Of Covid-19 Pandemic Experiences In Rural New Mexico, Madison Gonya Nov 2021

"We're Such A Small Community": A Qualitative Study Of Covid-19 Pandemic Experiences In Rural New Mexico, Madison Gonya

Shared Knowledge Conference

Rural communities throughout New Mexico faced different sets of challenges in the face of COVID-19 (Ranscome 2020; Mueller et al. 2021; RHI 2021). Such communities were burdened with uncontrolled community spread of COVID-19 that persisted longer than most of the U.S. (RHI 2021). Within this, New Mexican rural communities are more diverse than the average US rural community (RHI 2021). Data from 16 semi-structured interviews illuminate the experiences that rural New Mexicans encountered with physical health and healthcare challenges, mental health challenges, changing behaviors, health literacy, and the politicization of the pandemic. Discussion surrounding Rural New Mexico and the subsequent …

Tracing Transmission Of Sin Nombre Virus And Discovery Of Infection In Multiple Rodent Species, Samuel Goodfellow Nov 2021

Tracing Transmission Of Sin Nombre Virus And Discovery Of Infection In Multiple Rodent Species, Samuel Goodfellow

Shared Knowledge Conference

Orthohantaviruses are a family of negative-sense, single-stranded segmented RNA viruses that can cause hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) throughout North, Central and South America. Transmission of these viruses is primarily through exposure to droppings from infected rodents. Sin Nombre virus (SNV), found in North America, is primarily carried, and transmitted, by deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) and has a ~36% case fatality rate in humans. New Mexico has the highest number of human SNV cases in the United States making it important to understand the distribution and genetics of SNV within this region. In August 2020, amidst the severe acute respiratory syndrome …

Ca1 Catecholamine Response To Contextual Novelty Persists After Weeks Of Related Exposure, Tia N. Donaldson Nov 2021

Ca1 Catecholamine Response To Contextual Novelty Persists After Weeks Of Related Exposure, Tia N. Donaldson

Shared Knowledge Conference

Neuromodulatory dynamics play an important role in hippocampal function. Both dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) are required for synaptic plasticity and have been suggested to function as novelty signals within the hippocampus. It was hypothesized these catecholamines would increase when mice were exposed to a novel environment and that responses would decay over time as the context begins to become familiar. Wild type mice were stereotaxically injected into the CA1 of the hippocampus with an adeno-associated virus expressing either DA or NE and then implanted with a single fiber optic cannula. Combined with fluorescent sensors, in vivo fiber photometry was …

Distributional Effect Of Exposure To Cafos: A Case Study Of Large Dairies In New Mexico, Suraj Ghimire

Shared Knowledge Conference

The industrialization of the agricultural sector has turned into a double-edged sword for the future of humanity on this planet. On the one hand, without industrialized agriculture, there would be insufficient food and fiber to feed the growing human population. On the other hand, the rapid expansion of large-scale farms has resulted in an unprecedented amount of negative externalities impacting the environment and human health. While the benefits of abundance have been enjoyed evenly across the board, the negative impacts are borne mainly by and concentrated in the historically underprivileged communities. The goal of this research is to look at …

Guidance On The Critical Shortage Of Sodium Citrate Coagulation Tubes For Hemostasis Testing, Robert C. Gosselin, Annette Bowyer, Emmanuel J. Favaloro, Jill M. Johnsen, Giuseppe Lippi, Richard A. Marlar, Keith Neeves, Marian A. Rollins-Raval

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Recent manufacturing problems and increased utilization has created a shortage of 3.2% sodium citrate blood collection tubes used for coagulation testing, causing stakeholders such as hospitals, clinics and laboratories, to find suitable alternatives. Considerations for in-house citrate blood collection tube preparations or purchasing commercial products from unknown manufacturing sources is of particular concern to laboratories that perform coagulation testing. It is well recognized that variability exists between citrate blood collection tube manufacturers, thereby making any transition to new blood collection methods more challenging than simply switching to a new source. This document provides provisional guidance for validating alternative sources of …

Conversations About Utopia And Anti-Utopia In Latin America: Co-Authored Writing, Felix Manuel Burgos, Les W. Field, Lara Gunderson Oct 2021

Conversations About Utopia And Anti-Utopia In Latin America: Co-Authored Writing, Felix Manuel Burgos, Les W. Field, Lara Gunderson

LAII Events

During the markedly strange time for research and writing engendered by the pandemic, I came to realize that for many years I had noticed with alarm that utopian narratives and imaginaries, in written and visual media, had almost completely disappeared, whereas dystopian and anti-utopian imaginaries had everywhere proliferated. I initiated conversations with former and current students to co-theorize this historical moment in the ways alternative futures are conjured and represented. Out of those conversations the two projects presented here developed: on the one hand, a conversation with Lara Gunderson, (PhD in Anthropology 2018) about the utopian imaginary in Nicaragua was …

Correlates Of Co-Rumination Among Married Women And Men In Pakistan, Mohib Rehman

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

This dissertation examined co-rumination among married men and women and its effects on their marital quality and depressive outcomes. The study addressed the concept of co-rumination in the Pakistani family context as the notion of gender role affects many aspects of people’s lives in Pakistan including their self-disclosure. Data were collected online through social media from 150 married men and women who were in a marital relationship for at least a year. Using multiple regression, the association between co-rumination and depression was assessed and the moderating role of gender was examined to see if co-rumination results in different outcomes among …

Smart Energy Harvesting For Internet Of Things Networks, Fisayo Sangoleye

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In this thesis, we address the problem of prolonging the battery life of Internet of Things (IoT) nodes by introducing a smart energy harvesting framework for IoT networks supported by femtocell access points (FAPs) based on the principles of Contract Theory and Reinforcement Learning. Initially, the IoT nodes’ social and physical characteristics are identified and captured through the concept of IoT node types. Then, Contract Theory is adopted to capture the interactions among the FAPs, who provide personalized rewards, i.e., charging power, to the IoT nodes to incentivize them to invest their effort, i.e., transmission power, to report their data …
