In this study an attempt is made to explore elasticity of health insurance demand in India. It is important to note that both the Central and state governments have been trying to help people through their budgetary policies. Keeping in view their efforts and rural urban disparities in the country, we have tried to make an attempt to evaluate whether the people have been provided appropriate information about these governmental policies and how other socio economic factors are influencing the individual household choices to adopt a particular type of health insurance scheme.
This is based on latest National Family Health …

The shift towards primary human papillomavirus (HPV)-based screening has necessitated the search for a secondary triage test that provides sufficient sensitivity to detect high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cancer, but also brings an improved specificity to avoid unnecessary clinical work and colposcopy referrals. We evaluated the performance of the previously described DNA-methylation test (S5) in detecting CIN3 and cancers from diverse geographic settings in high-, medium- and low-income countries, using the cut-off of 0.80 and exploratory cut-offs of 2.62 and 3.70. Assays were performed using exfoliated cervical specimens (n = 808) and formalin-fixed biopsies (n = 166) from women …

Nepal has long aspired to graduate from the Least Development Country (LDC) to Developing Country category as defined by the United Nations system. Nepal had met two of the three graduating criteria and could have technically graduated from the LDC status in 2015. However, based on the Nepal government’s request to defer the review, the new 2021 assessment by the United Nations Committee for Development Policy (CDP) recommended that the country should graduate from the LDC status by 2026. The graduation requires not only meeting pre-defined development-related thresholds, but also maintaining sustained improvements in at least two consecutive assessments in …

An effective vaccine against Chlamydia trachomatis is urgently needed as infection rates continue to rise and C. trachomatis causes reproductive morbidity. An obligate intracellular pathogen, C. trachomatis employs a type 3 secretion system (T3SS) for host cell entry. The tip of the injectosome is composed of the protein CT584, which represents a potential target for neutralization with vaccine-induced antibody. Here, we investigate the immunogenicity and efficacy of a vaccine made of CT584 epitopes coupled to a bacteriophage virus-like particle (VLP), a novel platform for Chlamydia vaccines modeled on the success of HPV vaccines. Female mice were immunized intramuscularly, challenged transcervically …

Groundwater Law, The San Luis Valley, And Climate Change, Rachel Grabenstein
Student Published Scholarship
A vast region of the western United States is in the grips of the first climate change-induced megadrought observed in the past 1,200 years.
This paper explores how climate change and the current groundwater legal regimes interact in Colorado’s San Luis Valley. The Valley was chosen as a case study because it is an example of a community that introduced voluntary measures to address the overuse of groundwater. This paper examines how those measures might have been sufficient if not for the additional challenge of climate change.
This paper will first explain the history of water management in the Valley. …

Aphasia is a language disorder caused by injury or disease to the language network. While naming impairment is the hallmark feature of aphasia, it can affect a person’s ability to communicate across modalities (e.g., speaking, listening, reading, and/or writing) and negatively impacts the individual's quality of life. Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a clinical syndrome caused by neurodegenerative disease (e.g., AD, FTD), and progression includes global cognitive and communication disruption. Communication Partner Instruction (CPI) is an evidence-based approach that focuses on instructing communication partners on how to best provide communicative support for a person with aphasia. The goal of CPI …

The protein TRIM5α has multiple roles in anti-retroviral defense, but the mechanisms underlying TRIM5α action are unclear. Here, we used a proteomics approach to identify TRIM5α-interacting proteins. Analysis of the TRIM5α interactome found proteins participating in a wide variety of cellular functions including regulating antiviral signaling pathways. We used this data set to uncover a novel role for TRIM5α in mitophagy. Mitochondrial damage triggered the relocalization of TRIM5α to mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum where TRIM5α colocalized with markers of autophagy initiation and autophagosome biogenesis. Furthermore, we found that TRIM5 was required for the recruitment of the ULK1 complex and other autophagy …

The Reward Positivity (RewP) is a positive deflection in the EEG following reward receipt. Recent evidence suggests that the RewP is modulated by both reward probability as well as affective valuation (“liking”). Here we examined the sensitivity of the RewP when paired with positive affective vs. alcohol images in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD). We recruited 55 participants (AUD =28, Control= 27). Participants completed a reinforcement learning task (green or red screen feedback) with concurrent pictures (puppy or alcohol images). Although there was no group differences in puppy image ratings, there was a significant difference in alcohol image ratings …

Since appearing in modern form fifty years ago, the Clean Water Act has proven a powerful force for environmental justice, helping to clean up urban waterways across the country. Through establishment of water quality standards and enforcement of regulatory requirements, the Clean Water Act has compelled public authorities and private companies to upgrade infrastructure and curtail
discharge of sewage and other industrial effluent. At the same time, urban communities have continued to struggle with water pollution beyond the reaches of the Clean Water Act. This Article briefly examines three such communities: the Anacostia area of Washington, D.C.; the neighborhoods along …

Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative condition where speech and language deficits are the initial and most prominent symptoms. There are three recognized PPA variants with distinctive speech-language features, areas of atrophy, and underlying neuropathology. In the early stages of all variants, language symptoms may be very mild, such that they can only be seen on more complex and generative tasks (e.g., discourse production) rather than naming, repetition, etc. Previous work by Dalton et al. (2020) focused on MCA and Core Lexicon demonstrated that, compared to HCs, PWPPAs produced discourse that was less informative and efficient, with fewer typical …

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a common condition with potentially devastating individual, family, and societal consequences, is highly associated with substance use disorders (SUDs). The association between PTSD and SUD is complex and may involve adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), historical and multi-generational traumas, and social determinants of health as well as cultural and spiritual contexts. Current psychosocial and pharmacological treatments for PTSD are only modestly effective, and there is a need for more research on therapeutic interventions for co-occurring PTSD and SUD, including whether to provide integrated or sequential treatments. There is a current resurgence of interest in psychedelics as potential …

Purpose: Self-efficacy has been shown as an important predictor of outcomes following substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, evidencing it as a potential mechanism of behavior change. This secondary analysis examined the mediating effects of self-efficacy within Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) and standard Relapse Prevention (RP) for individuals with SUD in an aftercare setting. We hypothesized that post-treatment self-efficacy would mediate the association between treatment condition and 12-month substance use outcomes.
Methods: Participants were 286 individuals recruited following in/outpatient treatment and were randomized to either MBRP, RP, or treatment as usual (TAU). Participants completed the Drug Taking Confidence Questionnaire (DTQC-8) to …

Neuropathic pain is a chronic pain condition resulting from damaged peripheral nerves that induces allodynia (pathological touch sensitivity). Our previous studies suggest that prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is a risk factor for allodynia. In contrast to control rats, adult PAE rats with minimal nerve injury develop allodynia. Nerve-injured PAE rats display heightened peripheral and central nervous system (CNS) immune cell-derived proinflammatory cytokine production that consequently results in allodynia. This suggests that PAE dysregulates peripheral immune and CNS glial cell function to over-respond to subtle immune challenges leading to allodynia. However, gene expression profiles underlying dysregulated neuroimmune activity due to PAE …

Thinking About Mental Health is an initiative for youths and young adults which started at Explora during the COVID-19 pandemic. The initial goals of the program were to provide a series of videos with mental health professionals answering questions directly asked by the young adults employed at Explora, as well as an informative, accessible website with further reading and resources. Following these conversations, we evaluated what the teens told us by creating themes around topics. We used these themes to craft questions that would address the majority of the concerns posed by the teens in a concise manner. Since maintaining …
