State Of Urbanization In Nepal: The Official Definition And Reality, Keshav Bhattarai, Ambika P. Adhikari, Shiva Gautam
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
Nepali government’s official delineation of several human settlements as new urban areas has been questionable because many important criteria such as urban infrastructure and services, open space, population density and economic viability are not thoroughly analyzed while defining what is urban. Many settlements in Nepal officially defined as urban, often driven by political considerations, are operating in the rural framework forming ruralopolises. This paper analyzes various criteria needed for defining urbanization that are internationally accepted to assess Nepal’s official definition of urban settlements. Urban areas have been expanding in Nepal at the cost of agricultural, forest, and shrubland land uses. …

Nepal now enjoys a unique opportunity to positively transform the country’s economy and society. The economic activities fueled by remittance, supported by foreign aid, and aided by domestic economic activities such as tourism, trade, and services, including start-ups, are helping increase individual incomes. However, the earnings from remittances, which measure to about 25% of Nepal’s GDP, are spent on consumer goods and not on investments that can generate employment and raise the standards of living. The foreign aid is often donor driven and also not always well managed and wisely spent on national priorities. Further, it is frequently marred by …

Effects Of Childhood Health And Adversity On Women’S Estrous And Extended Sexuality In Romantic Relationships, Tran Dinh
Psychology ETDs
Variations in childhood conditions may favor different strategies of investment in pair-bonds and reproduction. The current study followed 213 romantically-involved women up to four times across the ovulatory cycle. Analyses find that childhood health and adversity moderate hormone-dependent changes in women’s sexual interests, oxytocin responses, and mate preferences. In light of proposed paternity assurance functions of extended (non-conceptive) sexuality, results suggest women with poorer, compared to better, childhood conditions prioritize bond formation but invest less in maintaining or bolstering partner investment. The estrous (conceptive) sexuality of women with poor childhood health may reflect greater investments in current reproduction, even when …

A Multidisciplinary Approach To Parental Maternal Mental Health In Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Theoretical Project, Courtney Grassham, Presbyterian Hospital Pediatric Medical Group
Annual IPE Day
Maternal mental health, especially in the peripartum period, is associated with a significant stigma and adverse outcomes are possible for moms and their newborns if perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are unrecognized and untreated. The neonatal intensive care unit or NICU often takes care of fragile babies for extended periods of time, while the families are far from their support systems. This places additional stress on moms and families at an already vulnerable time. The NICU is host to an extensive multidisciplinary team that could be utilized to check on and support families mental well being at this stressful time …

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
The increase in the number of incidents associated with sports has led to the rise of litigation, and physical, emotional, and financial damage to stakeholders. Collegiate athletic directors (ADs) have the duty to keep their programs safe.
This study aimed to explore and understand the practices, perceptions, and experiences of ADs from National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) institutions regarding preventive risk management. As risk management is significantly new in the sporting industry, an exploratory study using a qualitative design, grounded in narrative inquiry was conducted using the D.I.M. Process as a guide to collect data from 10 NAIA ADs …

Justice And Equity In Diabetes Care: An Interprofessional Education Opportunity, Lisa M. Taylor, Adreanne Cordova, Robin Gatlin
Annual IPE Day
Statement of the Problem: The prevalence of diabetes has increased over the past few decades. With more treatment options becoming available, there is still a disconnect in the delivery of care. Prejudice and discrimination on an individual level, as well as on a systemic level, impacts the delivery of equitable diabetes care.
Approach: Over the course of two weekends, participants attended an IPE 2-part seminar, where they critically examined the historical roots of structural racism, supremacy, structural violence, and biases embedded in contemporary US culture with an emphasis on how these structures impact health care and health outcomes of individuals, …
