Modeling Influenced Criteria In Classifiers' Imbalanced Challenges Based On Trss Bolstered By The Vague Nature Of Neutrosophic Theory, Ibrahim El-Henawy, Shrouk El-Amir, Mona Mohamed, Florentin Smarandache Mar 2024

Modeling Influenced Criteria In Classifiers' Imbalanced Challenges Based On Trss Bolstered By The Vague Nature Of Neutrosophic Theory, Ibrahim El-Henawy, Shrouk El-Amir, Mona Mohamed, Florentin Smarandache

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

Because of the advancements in technology, classification learning has become an essential activity in today's environment. Unfortunately, through the classification process, we noticed that the classifiers are unable to deal with the imbalanced data, which indicates there are many more instances (majority instances) in one class than in another. Identifying an appropriate classifier among the various candidates is a time-consuming and complex effort. Improper selection can hinder the classification model's ability to provide the right outcomes. Also, this operation requires preference among a set of alternatives by a set of criteria. Hence, multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methodology is the appropriate …

Santos-Medina, Pam Factor-Litvak, Tariqul Islam, Mahbubul Eunus, Mizanour Rahman, Mohammad Nasir Uddin, Ke Jian Liu, Faruque Parvez

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Chronic arsenic exposures are associated with multiple hematologic disturbances, including anemia. The goal of this study was to evaluate associations between arsenic exposures and hematological parameters among men and women who are chronically exposed to elevated levels of arsenic from drinking water. Hematologic analyses were performed on blood collected from 755 participants (45% male and 54% female) in the Health Effects of Arsenic Longitudinal Study (HEALS) cohort, Bangladesh. Herein, we used linear regression models to estimate associations between red blood cell (RBC) parameters (i.e., RBC counts, hematocrit (HCT), hemoglobin (Hgb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean …

The Effects Of Moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On Navigation In A Delayed Non- Match-To-Place Spatial Alternation Task By Adult Male And Female Rats, Gabriela Acosta Feb 2024

The Effects Of Moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On Navigation In A Delayed Non- Match-To-Place Spatial Alternation Task By Adult Male And Female Rats, Gabriela Acosta

Psychology ETDs

Prenatal alcohol exposure has been found to alter brain regions involved in spatial memory. Previous studies have shown that moderate PAE (mPAE; ~30-120 mg/dL) impairs spatial memory in male rats and damages the limbic-thalamus and hippocampus. Recent work has shown that visual discrimination memory is impaired after mPAE in a sex-specific manner such that female mice exhibit greater deficits after 15sec delay. It is unclear whether similar-sex-specific deficits would be observed in a spatial memory task or in a rat model of mPAE. Thus, the present study tests the hypothesis that mPAE would produce sex-specific deficits in a delayed non-match-to-place …

Rethinking Rights In A Disappearing Penumbra: How To Expand Upon Reproductive Rights In Court After Dobbs, Joshua J. Schroeder Feb 2024

Rethinking Rights In A Disappearing Penumbra: How To Expand Upon Reproductive Rights In Court After Dobbs, Joshua J. Schroeder

New Mexico Law Review

In 2022, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Org. overruled Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. The Dobbs Court suggested that future cases should similarly overrule other judicially protected rights including the right to marry interracially, to access contraceptives, and to have sex the way you like. The novel grounds Dobbs used to overrule Roe and Casey that might spread to other pro-rights case law was an ad hoc Janus v. AFSCME cost-benefit balancing test. Prior to Dobbs, the liberal wing of the U.S. Supreme Court believed that the Court could use cost-benefit balancing tests to safeguard certain judicially …

A Return To Rationality: Restoring The Rule Of Law After Daubert's Disastrous U-Turn, Andrew Jurs, Scott Devito

New Mexico Law Review

Consistency and rationality are central to the legitimacy of the modern court system. Considerable recent attention has been focused on the Court’s overturning of established precedent on abortion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Yet, as we empirically demonstrate, the courts, through the decisions of individual judges over thirty years, have reversed the meaning of the Daubert standard for admission of scientific evidence, thereby threatening the legitimacy of the very heart of the civil justice system. In the initial years after the Daubert decision, litigants saw its reliability standard as a stricter standard than the previously used Frye “general …

The Historical Development Of The Concept Of Forced Labor And The Open Boundaries Of Its Definition Today, Christopher M. Roberts Feb 2024

The Historical Development Of The Concept Of Forced Labor And The Open Boundaries Of Its Definition Today, Christopher M. Roberts

New Mexico Law Review

This article considers the steps taken on the international level in the 1920s and 30s to define the terms through which freedom and unfreedom in the context of labor might be understood, the manner in which understandings of forced labor have subsequently evolved, and the parameters and potentials of the concept today. The first section explores the history of the 1926 Slavery Convention; the nature of coercive labor in colonized states in the inter-war period; the drafting processes and coverage of the 1930 Forced Labour Convention; the Convention’s accompanying recommendations; and subsequent developments in the legal definition of forced labor. …

Don't Swab Me!: Limitations Of The Genetic Information Privacy Act In The Modern Genetic Testing Landscape, Ibrahim Al-Gahmi Feb 2024

Don't Swab Me!: Limitations Of The Genetic Information Privacy Act In The Modern Genetic Testing Landscape, Ibrahim Al-Gahmi

New Mexico Law Review

In an age where consumers can easily obtain genetic tests by simply sending a saliva or cheek swab sample through the mail and learn more than ever about their DNA and its genetic makeup, it is imperative that measures are established to provide consumers with both control and protection to the privacy of their submitted biological sample and analyzed genetic data. Currently, the landscape of genetic testing, and the resulting genetic information, is regulated by one law in New Mexico. The Genetic Information Privacy Act (NM-GIPA or Act), enacted in 1998, provides general prohibitions on the collection of genetic information …

A Primary Purpose Problem: State V. Tsosie, Lana Elledge Feb 2024

A Primary Purpose Problem: State V. Tsosie, Lana Elledge

New Mexico Law Review

In Crawford v. Washington, the United States Supreme Court held that if statements “were made under circumstances which would lead an objective witness reasonably to believe that the statements would be available for use at a later trial,” then a defendant has the right to confront and cross examine the witness. However, the Court’s subsequent retreat from this ruling and introduction of the primary purpose test in a later decision, created a flawed federal analysis, as seen in State v. Tsosie. In Tsosie, the New Mexico Supreme Court applied the primary purpose test to determine whether statements of the declarant, …

The Myth Of Anonymity: De-Identified Data As Legal Fiction, Elodie Currier Stoffel Feb 2024

The Myth Of Anonymity: De-Identified Data As Legal Fiction, Elodie Currier Stoffel

New Mexico Law Review

The unregulated collection, processing, and sale of consumer data has led to a plethora of social and legal issues. As regulators attempt to catch up with the “move fast and break things” ethos of tech innovation, “de-identified” or “anonymized” data has remained broadly unprotected. However, computer science literature shows us that “de-identified” data is a legal fiction. This Article examines the source of the de-identification fiction, analyzes the definitions in new state laws which attempt to close the loophole, tracks potential harms, and proposes a legislative solution which aims to ameliorate some of the legal fictions’ negative impacts. Part I …

Rule 11 Sanctions For Bad Discovery Advocacies, Jeffrey A. Parness, Alexandria N. Short Feb 2024

Rule 11 Sanctions For Bad Discovery Advocacies, Jeffrey A. Parness, Alexandria N. Short

New Mexico Law Review

For over eighty years, Rule 11 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure has authorized sanctions to combat frivolous legal arguments and factual allegations in some paper presentations. Since 1993, however, the rule has not applied to discovery. This article demonstrates how Rule 11 should be used to deter advocacy based on discovery that has “gone bad” since its initial disclosure. Disciplinary actions, malpractice claims, the discovery rules, and even the inherent sanctioning authority of the court are insufficient to deter lawyers from relying on now-bad discovery papers. Rule 11 would hold lawyers to a duty of reasonable inquiry before …

First, Do No Harm: One Medical School’S Approach To Designing And Implementing A Socially Accountable Global Track Of Distinction, Natalie Reid, Amy Clithero-Eridon, Cameron S. Crandall

HSC Education Days

Background

A socially accountable health professional curriculum aims to produce graduates competent in addressing priority health needs in diverse communities. Although parts of the UNM SOM curriculum address issues around health equity and cultural diversity, there is no formal curriculum training medical students to address global health (GH). Before designing our GH curriculum, we surveyed students to determine factors that may contribute to engagement.

Results

Nearly 98% of respondents were interested in GH, and 82% expressed interest in serving underserved populations. 88% of students with past GH experiences wanted to participate in an elective GH curriculum, which was statistically significant …

See One, Do One, Teach One - Trends In Resident Autonomy And Teaching Assistant Cases During General Surgery Residency In The United States: A Nationwide Retrospective Analysis, Amir Humza Sohail, Hoang Nguyen, Kevin Martinez, Samuel L. Flesner, Christian Martinez, Muhammad A. Quazi, Aman Goyal, Hassan Aziz

HSC Education Days

Introduction

Autonomy during residency is crucial to the training and development of confident, well-rounded surgeons in the operative room. One vital dimension of resident autonomy is teaching assistant (TA) cases, an indispensable opportunity for residents to gain confidence and hone intraoperative teaching skills. However, high-quality data on the volume and diversity of cases that most graduates perform are scarce.

Methods

A retrospective analysis was performed from publicly collected data of operative case logs from general surgery residents graduating from ACGME-accredited programs from 2006-2023. Data on the median overall number of surgeon chief and TA cases were retrieved. Collected data were …

Interprofessional Interviewing In Intraprofessional Athletic Training Student Pairs: A Multi-Institutional Educational Technique, Kevin M. Schroeder, Rachel Johnson Krug, Karla S. Judge, Dani M. Moffit

HSC Education Days

Context: The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) 2020 Standards for Professional Programs highlight the need to further incorporate interprofessional education (IPE) components into the curricula for athletic training programs. IPE can be a challenging component to integrate into the curriculum on an ongoing and routine basis, especially when access, quantity, and quality of IPE resources are limited at individual universities. Description: Athletic training students (ATS) from three professional athletic training programs were paired with one ATS from another institution to research a non-orthopedic, general medical condition. They were assigned a three-part project: (1) review the existing literature …

Facilitation And Assessment Of Clinical Reasoning In Entry-Level Neurologic Physical Therapy Program Via Self-Taught Objectives For Rehabilitation Management (Storm) Sessions, Susan J. Leach

HSC Education Days

Haworth and Conrad (2020) defined quality programs as “those which … contribute to enriching learning experiences for students that positively affect their growth and development”. Self-Taught Objectives for Rehabilitation Management (STORM) sessions provide an enriching learning experience to develop students’ clinical reasoning skills. Gilliland and Wainwright (2020) state that, “physical therapist (PT) educational programs need to prepare students to use integrative and adaptive clinical reasoning skills”. Assessment of these clinical reasoning skills can be challenging particularly in a high-stakes environment, but providing students with opportunities to express themselves in a low-stakes environment helps develop these skills. One method of developing …

Vertical Mentoring In Established Multi-Year Communities: Leveraging Student Experience, Hannah Herring, Kristin Strosnider, Abigale Aldrich, Elena Florez-Aguirre, Ann Morrison

HSC Education Days

Background: Learning Communities (LC) are an established mechanism for student advisement and support in medical schools in the United States. A recent survey* of LC programs in 27 US medical schools identified intentionally connecting students across class years as a feature of many LCs. The UNM School of Medicine LC program, launched in 2015, has seen the benefits of providing vertical mentoring and has increasingly scheduled activities where students interact with learners from other classes at key points throughout the curriculum. However, as the challenges students face change between didactic and clinical learning, it is important to understand the best …
