Limitations To Learning And Participation Using The Neu-Trosophic Analytic Hierarchy Process (Nahp), Marianela Silva Sánchez, María Mederos-Machado, Maya Jara-Sen San, Adrián García-Perdigon

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

This study is related to obstacles to learning and participation and is a quintessential concern in creating in-clusive systems and systems based on equity. The principal investigator question is: what are the obstacles to participation and learning, and how can they be assessed? The phenomenon occurs relative to the world today because too many marginalized communities across the globe do not have access to this form of edu-cation; socioeconomic access can be limited. Assessing its relevance supports future policy implications and assessments because it increases awareness of communities not easily accessible and struggles with diversi-ty and uncertain patterned systems. Despite …

Study Of The Impact Of Emerging Technologies On The Con-Servation Of Protective Forests Through The Plithogenic Hy-Pothesis And Neutrosophic Stance Detection, Jorge Isaac Avilés Monroy, Pedro Manuel Garcia Arias, Edgar Paul Cun Laines, David Fernando Zorrilla Baquero, Víctor Iván Espinoza De Los Monteros Enríquez

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

This paper investigates the efficacy of emerging technologies in protective forest conservation—artificial intelligence, drones, remote sensing, and blockchain—and whether such tools foster threat detection and enhanced biodiversity and human interaction. As deforestation and climate change continue to plague the planet, protected areas become more critical, and although successful conservation efforts exist, traditional tools fail to adequately provide the granularity and scalability required for nuanced action such as illegal logging or forest fires. The emerging abilities of these innovations have been published in scientific literature. However, there exists a translational gap in a systematic determination of their efficacy since levels of …

When Spanish officials first entered the northern region of New Spain in the late sixteenth century, they realized that irrigation would be a necessary development in the establishment of permanent communities. To sustain the early settlements, they built irrigation systems following the Iberian model, itself an extension of Arabo-Berber traditions from north Africa and the Middle East.

Quest For Purpose In Education: An Autoethnographic Study Of A Chinese Student’S Cross- Cultural Journey Through Logotherapy And Culturally Relevant Leadership, Bingsheng Chen

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This autoethnography examines a Chinese student's search for meaning while transitioning between Chinese and U.S. academic systems, shaped by the interplay of cultural values, societal pressures, and personal agency. Guided by Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy and Culturally Relevant Leadership (CRL), the study uses reflexive narrative analysis to explore how this personal quest for purpose intersected with institutional structures and cultural contexts (e.g., St. John's College, University of New Mexico). Illuminating profound challenges—including cultural shock, systemic inequities, and the emotional toll of adaptation—the research reveals a transformative journey of navigating dissonance, reframing adversity, embracing a dual cultural identity, and ultimately finding meaning …

El Presidio Hispano-Colonial: Estudio Del Discurso Moderno De Fortificación Del Imperio Español A Traves De Planos Y Mapas, Javier E. Astorga Villarroel Ph.D.

Latin American Studies ETDs

This dissertation project delves into the processes of ideation, design, projection, and knowledge-transfer around the Presidio, an iconoclastic fortification system deployed by the Spanish Empire while projecting its colonial power toward the Transatlantic region. Based on Bruno Latour’s classic theory on the agency of networks of meanings (also known as new materialism) applied to historical cartography, my investigation examines the production of techno-military knowledge around the presidios as they were depicted through plans, maps, and manuals while mapping out border areas over North America and the Caribbean, from the 17th to the 19th centuries. With archival research work performed at …

Inclusive Workforce Development For An Equitable Low-Carbon Transition, Shannon Sanchez-Youngman, Gabriel Pacyniak, Melanie Sayuri Sonntag, Addison Fulton May 2025

Inclusive Workforce Development For An Equitable Low-Carbon Transition, Shannon Sanchez-Youngman, Gabriel Pacyniak, Melanie Sayuri Sonntag, Addison Fulton

Natural Resources Journal

The shift to a low-carbon economy will require a massive build out of low-carbon technologies, which in turn will require millions of new laborers with specific skills. Similarly, the decline of fossil-fuel industries will require retraining and new job opportunities for laborers in these fields. At the same time, there is an emerging scholarly focus on a “just transition” to a low-carbon economy. This essay conceptualizes inclusive workforce development as a key component of a just transition. Inclusive workforce development promotes policies that reach and effectively serve the broadest possible range of people and communities. In particular, inclusive workforce development …

Water Governance And Water Futures In The United States And Australia, Robert Haskell Abrams May 2025

Water Governance And Water Futures In The United States And Australia, Robert Haskell Abrams

Natural Resources Journal

The world’s hydroclimate has become more extreme in the last several decades—a phenomenon described in technical terms as the loss of stationarity. Focusing particularly on the drought-induced stresses, this Article examines water governance in the American West and Australia seeking aspects in the laws, institutions, and approaches of each nation that could be adapted to advantage by the other in coping with the onset of reduced flows in major river basins—most prominently, the Colorado in the U.S. and the Murray-Darling in Australia. Significant similarities of history, settlement of arid regions, and legal systems abound. These include Anglo settlement bringing riparian …

Imágenes De Silencio, Compromiso, Persecución Y Tortura: La Teología De La Liberación Y Su Encrucijada Con Las Dictaduras Del Cono Sur Desde Una Representación Cinematográfica, Marcial Martínez

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This dissertation examines the interaction between liberation theology and the

dictatorships of the Southern Cone from the 1960s to the 1980s through cinematic

representation. Filmmakers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay

depict the political upheavals of the time, including the rise of leftist movements,

military regimes, and the influence of liberation theology, a progressive religious

ideology advocating for the oppressed. The study focuses on what is defined here

as the "cinematic canon of liberation theology," a body of films and documentaries

that legitimize, contest, or obscure ideologies tied to this movement vis-à-vis the

dictatorships. These films contest the silence …

Eviction Sealing: A Lifeline In The Fight For Housing Justice, Allison Freedman May 2025

Eviction Sealing: A Lifeline In The Fight For Housing Justice, Allison Freedman

Faculty Scholarship

In January 2023, the White House released a Blueprint for a Renters Bill of Rights. The Blueprint called for immediate sealing of eviction case filings to reduce the likelihood that tenants would be locked out of future housing opportunities without the chance to defend themselves. Shortly thereafter, the Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued a request for public comment on how the use of eviction records and screening algorithms may affect tenant housing opportunities and drive discriminatory outcomes. The eviction crisis, its discriminatory effects, and the idea that sealing eviction records may provide a solution to …

Horizonte Fronterizo: The Vitality Of Community And Contemporary San Diego-Tijuana Border Art, Ruben L. Loza Apr 2025

Horizonte Fronterizo: The Vitality Of Community And Contemporary San Diego-Tijuana Border Art, Ruben L. Loza

Chicana and Chicano Studies ETDs

This research dedicates attention to different examples of music and visual art that encompass contemporary San Diego-Tijuana border-integrated art. By employing a participant-observer approach with the music component and conducting plática-based interviews with all involved artists, this work underlines the vitality of the artworks’ manipulation of the U.S.-Mexico border wall and community as a driving force in the elaboration and growing influence of these projects and pieces. By analyzing how these works act as vehicles for response, light is also cast on greater matters that lie beyond the border zone: propagation of fear, anti-immigrant sentiment, and misinformed anxieties.

The Social Life Of Plants: Botanical Representations In Moche Art, Breanna Fae Reiss Apr 2025

The Social Life Of Plants: Botanical Representations In Moche Art, Breanna Fae Reiss

Art & Art History ETDs

The Moche were semi-autonomous communities who thrived in the ten fertile riverine valleys of Peru’s northern coast between the late fourth and ninth centuries CE. Phase IV (c. 590–700 CE) Southern Moche ceramics feature intricate fine line visual narrative scenes with many multivalent symbols and motifs. This dissertation intends to understand why plants begin to play a more significant role in the Moche iconographic corpus in this period. I explore the interests of elites, the ecological web interweaving image and environment, and species identification. The local flora was affected on one hand by naturally occurring changes in weather and environment …

Prenatal Exposure To Pm2.5 Concentration And Risk Of Preterm Birth In New Mexico; A Seasonal Pattern And Spatio-Temporal Modeling., Onyedikachi J. Okeke

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

This study investigates the association between prenatal PM2.5 exposure and preterm birth risk in New Mexico (2014–2021). Using descriptive statistics, time series models, and spatial analyses, findings show an average preterm birth rate of 14.87 per 1,000 live births, with moderate correlation (r = 0.727) between PM2.5 levels and very preterm births. While traditional models revealed no significant global effect, spatial methods such as Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) and Multiscale GWR uncovered strong spatial heterogeneity. PM2.5 effects varied by county (coefficients: -0.00154 to 0.00150), with clustering evident in 2018–2019 (Moran’s I = 0.155–0.174). Results highlight the limitations of global models …

Spatial And Equity Analysis Of The Xeriscape Conversion Rebate Program In Albuquerque, Nm., Claire Jordy

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

With increasing water scarcity concerns threatening water supplies, many cities in the Western U.S. are focusing more effort on their water conservation programs to reduce consumptive water use. The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority (Water Authority) in Bernalillo County, NM has had several water conservation programs in place since the 1990s, and still, they aim to further reduce water consumption. The Xeriscape Conversion Rebate Program is one of the primary tools to achieve this goal, encouraging customers to convert their high water-use turfgrass lawns to desert-friendly xeriscaping by providing a one-time rebate on their water bill. This rebate program …

De-Dollarization And South Asia: Challenges And Opportunities For Nepal In A Multipolar Currency World, Keshav Bhattarai, Ambika P. Adhikari

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

The United States dollar’s dominance as the global reserve currency, established under the 1944 Bretton Woods system, persists despite the 1971 decoupling of the gold backing to the dollar. Its liquidity, stability, and full support by the US government confer a solid financial security and advantage to the currency, including a universal acceptance of the dollar and a relatively low borrowing cost. Because of these reasons, the US dollar has been able to dominate the global financial markets for the past eight decades. However, the rapidly emerging global political and economic power shifts are challenging the status of the US …

Autopoietic Energy Transition Towards Clean And Renewable Energy For Developing Countries, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2025

Autopoietic Energy Transition Towards Clean And Renewable Energy For Developing Countries, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The global economy's reliance on energy supply and distribution necessitates a shift towards clean and renewable energy sources. This article explores how the economies of energy producers and consumers can be better modeled through the lens of autopoiesis, a concept developed by Humberto Maturana and further elaborated by Fritjof Capra (cf. Web of Life). By viewing energy systems as self-producing and self-maintaining entities, we can gain insights into the dynamics of energy transition in developing countries and identify strategies for fostering sustainable and resilient energy ecosystems.

When Emotions Flare: Solar Rhythms, Emotions And Cycles Of Political Revolution, Andreas Hernandez, Carolina Zilli Vieira, Alexandra Smith, Rebecca Olson

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Revolutions are among the most transformative events in human history. Analyzing 395 revolutionary episodes from 1900 to 2014, we find that major waves cluster around solar maxima - periods of intensified geomagnetic activity. Drawing on biomedical research linking geomagnetic disturbances to cardiovascular and stress regulation, and thus to emotional states, we propose that solar cycles modulate the affective ecologies within which revolutions arise. Solar activity may accelerate, shape, and amplify revolutionary cycles by heightening emotional climates and tipping fragile systems toward mass mobilization. This reframes revolutions as planetary events - entanglements of political conflict, embodied emotion, and cosmic …

Backdoor Nepa Proceduralization: Less Environmental Substance Begets More Environmental Procedure, Cade Mallett Jan 2025

Backdoor Nepa Proceduralization: Less Environmental Substance Begets More Environmental Procedure, Cade Mallett

Natural Resources Journal

The National Environmental Policy Act (“NEPA”) tasks the government with fully analyzing the environmental consequences of the actions it plans to take before those actions can be performed. This procedural function of NEPA is much maligned by the development community for imposing paralyzingly high costs on government action. At the same time, the statute is disparaged by environmentalists as a toothless and ineffective tool which cannot compel the government to conform its actions to the environment’s best interests. So, which side is right? Arguably, both are. By interpreting NEPA to be a purely procedural statute, the Supreme Court’s holdings on …

Forest Response To Increasingly Frequent Fire And Drought Disturbances, Kevin G. Willson Dec 2024

Forest Response To Increasingly Frequent Fire And Drought Disturbances, Kevin G. Willson

Biology ETDs

Changes in fire regimes and drought intensity have increased fire and drought severity in southwestern forests, decreasing forest resilience to recent changes in climate. As tree response and regeneration after disturbance are critical for forest persistence, this dissertation assesses ponderosa pine regeneration patterns after high-severity fire, tree growth response to the reintroduction of frequent-fire, and tree growth response to multiyear droughts in fire-maintained and fire-excluded forests. We found that high-severity patch locations were more likely to regenerate when positioned downwind, downslope, and near intact forest. Trees had similar growth responses to first-entry fires and reburns following long-term fire-exclusion. After experiencing …

Modern Agricultural Servitude: The Modern Farm Worker Experience In The Salinas Valley, Jesus E. Tavarez Dec 2024

Modern Agricultural Servitude: The Modern Farm Worker Experience In The Salinas Valley, Jesus E. Tavarez

Chicana and Chicano Studies ETDs

The prevailing narrative in Chicanx studies focuses on the historical labor activism of the United Farm Workers (UFW) in the 1960s and ‘70s. I am particularly interested in examining the contemporary campesino experience in the Salinas Valley by discussing the history behind Mexican cheap labor, low wages, exploitive work conditions with inadequate healthcare, agrochemical exposure, and historical consciousness of farm workers. I will argue that farm workers are in dire need of a migratory reform as an approach to improve the working conditions of farm workers throughout California. This research aims to shed light on how the multi-billion-dollar agribusiness industry …

The Social Matter Of Opioids: Glitches In Immunity Beyond The Human, Nathan A. Leach Dec 2024

The Social Matter Of Opioids: Glitches In Immunity Beyond The Human, Nathan A. Leach

American Studies ETDs

The Social Matter of Opioids: Glitches in Immunity Beyond the Human examines the contemporary opioid crisis and its relationship to capitalism, imperialism, and biomedicine. This dissertation also considers how the twin processes of crisis and racialization relate to how human-opioid entanglements perform and transgress normative anthropological assumptions of difference. Through theories of biopolitics, Black feminism, queer of color critique, and psychoanalytic insight, I argue for a more critical account of the entanglement of humans with opioids where processes of capitalist and imperial crisis produce novel forms of social ontology. I substantiate this by examining speculative tissue economies, interspecies relationality, draconian …

Pathways Of Participation: Community Engagement And Collaborative Adaptation In Disaster Contexts Across Diverse Environments, Ria Mukerji

Geography ETDs

This paper broadens the concept of effective community participation in disaster risk reduction by analyzing three case studies that emphasize unconventional, locally driven approaches. Using a multi-case study method, I examine forms of participation that challenge traditional top-down models and focus on local knowledge and community agency. In Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico, a co-designed environmental data dashboard with Pueblo members demonstrates how integrating Indigenous knowledge can enhance disaster preparedness. The Soldados Dam case in Ecuador shows how power imbalances drive community stakeholders to become protestors, emphasizing the need for adaptive engagement to prevent conflict. In Pajaro, California, a marginalized community’s …

Things Fall(Ing) Apart: Deconstructing Humanism For History Teaching In A Posthumanist Society, Lou Ellis Brassington

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Abstract

This study is a reflective analysis of the discursive construction of the social studies and the teaching of history from medieval scholasticism, through Enlightenment humanism, and into our posthumanist landscape. As an exploration of the foundations of Western thought, with an emphasis on humanism as it has historically affected construction of the social studies, this investigation focuses on theorists, praxis, curriculum development, and teacher identity. My research examined the pedagogical and curriculum choices for the teaching of history along with the intersection of the humanities and humanism from the Enlightenment through the criticalities of the 20th century, and into …

Plithogenic Hypothesis On The Influence Of Electronic Com-Merce On Retail Sales Dynamics In Shopping Centers, Rosa Maria Criollo Delgado, Julio Cesar Vidal Rischmoller, Eluard Alexander Mendoza Zenozain

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

The present research addresses the growing argument on the ways in which e-commerce is changing dynamics in shopping centers by offering a plitogenic hypothesis that looks into the intricacies between the two worlds. The present research goes into duality of these selling environments and their coexistence in a backdrop of chal-lenging traditional models of buying which digital platforms are. Despite the rich literature on electronic com-merce and retail, most of the studies have isolated perspectives on the subject, avoiding interrelations that properly emerge from online commerce and physical shopping centers. The study attempts to fill that theoreti-cal gap by applying …
