Using Instream Flows On The Gila River To Provide Benefits For The Environment And The Economy, Emily Geery
Using Instream Flows On The Gila River To Provide Benefits For The Environment And The Economy, Emily Geery
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Professionals within the fields of water resources and community and regional planning have engaged in dialogue about how to balance water consumption with development patterns in the western United States. Central to this discussion is a debate about future water management of the Gila River. There is a wide spectrum of opinions regarding the value of leaving water in the river for environmental reasons versus diverting it from the river for increased commercial development. The 2004 Arizona Water Settlements Act (AWSA) provides the state of New Mexico with 140,000 acre-feet in any ten-year period of water rights on the Gila …

Poverty Reduction In Nepal: A Clinical Economics Approach, Gyan Pradhan, Rabindra Bhandari
Poverty Reduction In Nepal: A Clinical Economics Approach, Gyan Pradhan, Rabindra Bhandari
Himalayan Policy Research Conference
Following Sachs (2005), this paper adopts a clinical economics approach and attempts to undertake a systematic “differential diagnosis” of the nature and scope of poverty in Nepal. Subsequently, we will examine the causes of poverty and the determinants of household per capita income in Nepal. Ultimately, we hope to propose programs and institutions to address the critical barriers to poverty reduction that are identified through the differential diagnosis.
Trade Potential And Ecological Analysis Of Non-Timber Products In Himalayan Kingdom Of Nepal, Krishna Poudel
Trade Potential And Ecological Analysis Of Non-Timber Products In Himalayan Kingdom Of Nepal, Krishna Poudel
Himalayan Policy Research Conference
The study was initially conceived to identify ten important MAPs and NTFPs to present information to national and international private investors on socio-economic and environmental opportunities available for investment on those species. But, in the course of the study during the various interaction programs organized for feedbacks, participating stakeholders suggested the study team to consider more than 10 species from investment point of view. So, the study considered a list of 30 species already selected by the national level Herbs and NTFP Coordination Committee (HNCC) of the government of Nepal. The study has identified four top priority species for low …

The Human Dimensions Of Land Change In Lamjung District Of Nepal, Milan Shrestha
The Human Dimensions Of Land Change In Lamjung District Of Nepal, Milan Shrestha
Himalayan Policy Research Conference
Among land-change scientists, there is a growing recognition of the need for an integrative multilevel approach to study the relationships of agricultural ‘modification activities’ with global land-use and land-cover change (LUCC) (Moran 2005; Walsh et al. 2004). This new development comes as a crucial step to move beyond the primary area of change – the conversion of forests – to study the changes in agricultural areas, mainly the land-use strategies resulting in different agricultural intensification levels (Lambin et al. 2000; Laney 2004).

The Human Dimensions Of Land Change In Lamjung Of Nepal, Milan Shrestha
The Human Dimensions Of Land Change In Lamjung Of Nepal, Milan Shrestha
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
This paper presents a brief overview of an anthropological study conducted in Lamjung, Nepal. Using a multi-scalar approach that integrates household and community data with remote sensing and geographic information system applications, this study investigated the relationships between agricultural land-use strategies and the district level land-cover change patterns for the period between 1976 through 2004. The main focus of this paper, however, is on the human dimensions part, which examines the household conditions and community contexts under which smallholders changed their land-use strategies. In doing so, it looks beyond the conventional view that tends to over-emphasize demographic and poverty factors.

Inequality, Polarization And Violent Conflict: The Maoist Insurgency In Nepal, Mani Nepal, Alok K. Bohara, Kishore Gawande
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
We investigate the effect of inequality, measured by Gini and Polarization indices, on the level of Nepals conflicts due to Maoist's People's War using rational choice theory. The number of people killed by Maoist rebels during 1996-2003 in each Nepalese village is modeled as count data at the village level, with heterogeneity across villages in each district. We find strong evidence that greater inequality escalates deadly violence; the presence of social network and the government welfare programs may reduce it; and the level of income is unrelated to conflict but may mitigate effect of inequality on conflict. The inequality variables …
Rural Vulnerability And Tea Plantation Migration In Eastern Nepal And Darjeeling, Sarah Besky
Rural Vulnerability And Tea Plantation Migration In Eastern Nepal And Darjeeling, Sarah Besky
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
This paper will analyze migration from rural eastern Nepal to tea plantations in eastern Nepal and Darjeeling and the potentials such migration might represent for coping with rural vulnerability and food scarcity. I will contextualize this paper in a regional history of agricultural intensification and migration, which began in the eighteenth century with Gorkhali conquests of todays Mechi region and continued in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with the recruitment of plantation laborers from Nepal to British India. For many Kiranti ethnic groups, agricultural intensification resulted in social marginalization, land degradation due to over-population and over-farming, and eventual migration to …

Non-timber Forest Products (NTFPs) have been welfare, subsistence or livelihood commodity since long; these are traditional source of food, fiber, medicine, etc. In some rural hilly areas, it contributes up to 50 % of total annual family income. NTFPs sub-sector in Nepal contributes about 5 % of national GDP out of total estimation of about 15 % from the whole forestry sector (almost 1/3). More than 100 types of plant species are harvested from the wild and traded to international market mostly to India; 95 % of the NTFPs are collected from the wild and 90 % are exported to …
An Assessment Of The Causes Of Conflict In Nepal, Bishwa Nath Tiwari
An Assessment Of The Causes Of Conflict In Nepal, Bishwa Nath Tiwari
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
With the end of cold war, the nature and consequences of conflict changed significantly. Today there is conflict more between the people of a country than between countries. Thus, the reasons of conflict are changing with the lapse of time. As the number of deaths owing to conflict has been accelerating in the recent decades, it is utmost important to look into its causes. Against this backdrop the present study makes a modest attempt to find out the causes and correlates of conflict and its intensity using data of a cross section of 75 districts of Nepal.

Historical Roots Of Migration In The Age Of Globalization, Cynthia Radding
Historical Roots Of Migration In The Age Of Globalization, Cynthia Radding
Faculty and Staff Publications
Migratory streams to and from Latin America have created human ebbs and flows over a century-and-a-half, since the borderlands were divided by the bi-national boundary between Mexico and the U.S. In truth, what we know as the borderlands, an extended region of changing ecological, cultural and political dimensions, running from the Californias to the Caribbean basin, has articulated the movements of diverse peoples through deserts, mountains and wetlands since long before the nation-state defined North American geography. The present paper outlines the historical context for migratory flows to and from the U.S. and Latin America, through the portal of Mexico, …

Bber Population Estimates For New Mexico, 2001-2006: Origins Of A Growing Gap With Census Bureau Estimates, Jack Baker
BBER Publications
This article compares two sets of annual population estimates for the state of New Mexico and its counties, from 2001 through 2006: the U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Programs intercensal estimates, and alternative estimates from the UNM Bureau of Business and Economic Research Population Estimates Program. The author describes how the Census Bureau undercounted the NM population in the 2000 decennial census, with a resulting loss of federal funding for state social programs. For this reason the state has funded the Census Dissemination and Demographic Analysis Project; the BBER-Population Estimates Program has been tasked with providing population data with better …

Will The Minute System Work To Modernize The International Boundary And Water Commission?, Annelia Tinklenberg
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC), in its current form, was created in 1944 by the Treaty Regarding Utilization of Waters of Colorado and Tijuana Rivers and of the Rio Grande. The IBWC was given the authority to manage surface water along the US-Mexico border. Recent changes along the border have exposed a number of weaknesses in both the 1944 Water Treaty and the IBWC, making it difficult to resolve disputes. The challenges of administering the 1944 Water Treaty have escalated as population continues to grow, environmental concerns increase, water quality is jeopardized by sanitation inadequacies, groundwater resources are …

Fray Alonso De Benavides's Memoriales Of 1630 And 1634: Preliminary Observations, Anthony J. Cárdenas-Rotunno
Research Papers
A study of Benavides's Memoriales in Spanish is made difficult because only the 1630 Memorial has a Spanish edition accompanying it. The 1634 Memorial has been published only as a translation into English. Despite this insufficiency, comparing the two translations suffices to demonstrate that the term "revision," if it means "correcting" or "improving," does not aptly describe the textual relationship between the two. Furthermore, the remaining physical evidence of the 1634 Memorial makes it seems unlikely that it was ever published or, more importantly, that it ever reached Pope Urban VIII to whom it was directed.
Emiliano Zapata: Figure, Image, Symbol, Theresa Avila
Emiliano Zapata: Figure, Image, Symbol, Theresa Avila
Research Papers
How did an archetype of rebellion become a personification of national identity? Emiliano Zapata (1879-1919), one of the leaders of the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), has often signified competing elements for varied constituencies locked in ideological conflict. Each narrative seeks to claim Zapata's iconic status as a symbol for what they respectively represent nationally. Hundreds of portraits of Zapata have been fundamental to the construction of each of these competing narratives. My essay addresses the reasons the image of Zapata has been engaged and how its meaning has been altered through time.

Poverty, Inequality, Violent Conflict, And Welfare Loss: Micro-Level Evidence From Nepal, Mani Nepal
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
Poverty alleviation has become one of the main global agendas of the twenty first century, but the identification and targeting of the poor is facing fundamental problems due to the lack of required information. We utilize the micro-level estimation technique to estimate household expenditure for the census households using Nepalese household surveys, and estimate different measures of poverty and inequality at the national level as well as at the regional, districts and village levels, and for the different caste/ethnic groups. Our findings indicate that the reduction in poverty during 1995/96 – 2003/04 is not uniform across the villages of Nepal, …
