Like A Moth To The Flame: Modernity And Mary Wigman 1886-1973, Mary Anne Santos Newhall Jun 2010

Like A Moth To The Flame: Modernity And Mary Wigman 1886-1973, Mary Anne Santos Newhall

History ETDs

From her birth in 1886 to her death in 1973, the life of German dancer Mary Wigman spanned the Wilhelmine Empire, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and the post-war years. She stands as a seminal figure in what has come to be known as the modern dance. Her Ausdruckstanz or dance of expression was fundamental to the development of dance and theater in Germany and beyond. Her aesthetic ideas were disseminated across the European continent and traveled to the United States through her own touring from 1929-1932 and continued after the establishment of the Mary Wigman School in New …

Suitability Modeling And The Location Of Utility-Scale Solar Power Plants In The Southwestern United States, Drew Ignizio Jun 2010

Suitability Modeling And The Location Of Utility-Scale Solar Power Plants In The Southwestern United States, Drew Ignizio

Geography ETDs

As states and regions have begun prioritizing renewable energy at the legislative level, solar energy has started to play a noticeably larger role in the energy portfolio of certain regions in the United States. Decision making concerning the siting of new solar facilities can be complicated, and GIS-based suitability modeling is often employed to determine ideal candidate sites. These suitability models seek to evaluate a comprehensive set of relevant criteria (such as insolation values, topography, access, land designation status, etc.), often at different weights, to produce a classified map of all potential sites that will facilitate decisions of site location. …

Adolescent Geographies In The Classroom: Interactions With Place- And Community-Based Education, Anna Gahl Cole

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The purpose of this study was to examine three phenomena, 1.) the classroom struggles and successes of students and teachers participating in a place- and community-based curriculum; 2). students personal geographies: their experiences, perspectives and interpretations of their homes, school, community and city; and 3.) interactions between community-based curriculum and students' geographies. This study goes to the intersection of place-based curriculum and students' geographies to explore the interactions that exist between these phenomena. Grounded in critical spatial, feminist standpoint, and constructivist theories, this study draws upon scholarship in Children's Geographies, place- and community-based education, and critical spatial studies. The Second …

Spaña, New Mexico: Santos, Sonic And Second Cousins, Maria Elena C. Salazar Jun 2010

Spaña, New Mexico: Santos, Sonic And Second Cousins, Maria Elena C. Salazar

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This thesis sheds light on the multiple identities of the Hispano people of the Española Valley in Northern New Mexico, a population that to outsiders is commonly misunderstood and stereotyped. It is a population regarded with some mystery, awe, and admiration, as well as fear and hatred, a population that even to itself sometimes remains an enigma. The qualitative study undertaken examined the culture and life experiences of 11 native Hispanics living in this community and explored their perspectives on gender and generational differences. Data were collected through individual, semi-structured interviews, which were then analyzed through a recursive process of …

The Enduring Communities Project Of Japanese American Experiences In New Mexico During World War Ii And Beyond: A Teachers Journey In Creating Meaningful Curriculum For The Secondary Social Studies Classroom, Diane Ball Jun 2010

The Enduring Communities Project Of Japanese American Experiences In New Mexico During World War Ii And Beyond: A Teachers Journey In Creating Meaningful Curriculum For The Secondary Social Studies Classroom, Diane Ball

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

In 2006, the Japanese American National Museum funded a three year curriculum development project entitled Enduring Communities: Japanese Americans in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Utah. As a member of the team of teachers from New Mexico, I used this experience to study my process of developing meaningful content and pedagogy about Japanese American internment for U.S. History and Civics courses at the secondary level. History is full of stories involving characters, actions, events, artifacts and analysis by those within the experience and those studying the experience in an academic setting. Understanding the past means knowing how what happened …

Chanka Settlement Ecology: Hilltop Sites, Land Use And Warfare In Late Prehispanic Andahuaylas, Peru, Lucas C. Kellett

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation investigates Late Intermediate Period (AD 1000-1400) hilltop settlements of the central Andean highlands. Rather than a traditional warfare-centered political perspective, the research employs primarily an ecological model in which to evaluate the widespread settlement shift to high altitude ridge tops beginning ca. AD 1000. More specifically, the research investigates the multi-faceted role that climate change may have played in the establishment of LIP hilltop settlements. I examine the concomitant shifts in the local ecology and the economic organization of hilltop communities. Using a multi-scalar and methodologically diverse research design, incorporating ethnohistory, field survey, excavation and GIS, I examine …

Molecular Phylogenetic Investigation Of Microbial Diversity And Nitrogen Cycling In Lava Tubes, Jennifer Jane Marshall Hathaway May 2010

Molecular Phylogenetic Investigation Of Microbial Diversity And Nitrogen Cycling In Lava Tubes, Jennifer Jane Marshall Hathaway

Biology ETDs

Worldwide, lava tubes host colorful microbial mats on their walls and ceilings. Little is known about the diversity and ecological roles of the bacteria communities in the subsurface ecosystem of lava tubes. White and yellow microbial mats were collected from four lava tubes from the Azorean island of Terceira and from four lava tubes on the Big Island of Hawaii, to compare and contrast the diversity of bacteria found in lava tubes. The 16S rRNA gene was sequenced in order to determine the diversity within these caves, and to begin to elucidate the environmental controls on microbial diversity in the …

Exploring Social Interaction At The Ancient Maya City Of Copan, Honduras: A Multi-Scalar Geographic Information Systems (Gis) Analysis Of Access And Visibility, Heather M. Richards-Rissetto May 2010

Exploring Social Interaction At The Ancient Maya City Of Copan, Honduras: A Multi-Scalar Geographic Information Systems (Gis) Analysis Of Access And Visibility, Heather M. Richards-Rissetto

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation investigates late eighth and early ninth century social interaction at the archaeological site of Copán, Honduras. Two main research questions are addressed: (1) Did people of different social classes experience different degrees of social connectivity? and (2) Did people living in different parts of the city experience different degrees of social connectivity? A Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to quantify social connectivity, that is, degree of social integration or social segregation, using access and visibility as proxy measures for social interaction, and to examine whether Copáns inhabitants influenced social interaction by configuring their city to facilitate or …

The Once And Future King: A New Approach To Ancient Maya Mortuary Monuments From Palenque, Tikal, And Copan, Elizabeth Drake Olton May 2010

The Once And Future King: A New Approach To Ancient Maya Mortuary Monuments From Palenque, Tikal, And Copan, Elizabeth Drake Olton

Art & Art History ETDs

This dissertation examines the Temple of the Inscriptions, Temple I, and Temple 26 and explores what could have motivated the Maya to construct these large monuments and how they might have been meaningful. Traditional art historical methods of comparative and formal analyses are employed as tools for discussing patterns of meaning among these temples. The structural and decorative programs shared by all three temples signal that they are part of a separate genre of architecture that is specifically mortuary and interactive. Furthermore, these features are also a mode of communication. Messages depicted in the offerings, sculpture, and spaces of the …

Water Resources Field Methods Reports

This course is the required capstone seminar for Master of Water Resources (MWR) graduate students in the Water Resources Program at the University of New Mexico. Drs. Michael E. Campana (hydrology), Paul Matthews (water law and policy), and David Brookshire (environmental economics) were the instructors. The class focused on three contemporary issues within the Rio Grande basin: 1) arsenic in the waters of the basin, including both the conflict between the City of Albuquerque and Isleta Pueblo over arsenic in the Rio Grande and the impending change in drinking water standards for arsenic; 2) the hydrologic impacts and fire management …

Urbanization Of Seven Springs, New Mexico:An Evaluation Of Current And Projected Impacts On Ground- And Surface-Water Resources, William S. Mcdonald

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The village of Seven Springs, New Mexico, lies north of Fenton Lake in the valley of the Rio Cebolla in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico. The valley is funnel shaped -- narrowest downstream -- with homes most densely packed at the bottom of the funnel. It is typical of many small communities scattered throughout the state in that residents rely on private wells for drinking water and on individual septic systems for disposal of household waste. The current population in the village and the valley is light -- about 50 permanent residents swelling to about 100 during the …

Faculty Scholarship

The Report’s Recommendations for next steps reflect and incorporate the multiple experiences, false starts, insights, frustrations and new beginnings that represent the various ways that diversity works within the different sectors of the legal profession. We have included Recommendations that are already being used as well as some that are ambitious and aspirational. Within each of the four sectors of the profession, the recommendations are broadly categorized, but not prioritized. We recognize that every individual or organization will have its own priorities based on its unique circumstances. We do encourage the Report’s users to select and prioritize recommendations for next …

Exile And Montage: Josep Renaus Reckoning With Community And Self, Claire-Lise Bénaud, Suzanne M. Schadl Apr 2010

Exile And Montage: Josep Renaus Reckoning With Community And Self, Claire-Lise Bénaud, Suzanne M. Schadl

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper examines Spanish photomontagist, Josep Renaus artistic progression through two exiles (the first in Mexico and the second in East Germany) as an example in which an individual defines his cultural identity first in the context of community, a collective leftist-socialist identity, and then as Stuart Hall points out in terms of 'difference.' When history reveals to Renau his separation from the community, he has no choice but to find himself in an expression of difference — not from the home he makes for himself in Mexico so much as from the neighbor he must criticize in order to …
