Looking For Stability: Holistic Policy Analysis In Light Of Rapid Development Among Kham Tibetan Herding Groups, J. Marc Foggin, Jared Phillips Oct 2010

Looking For Stability: Holistic Policy Analysis In Light Of Rapid Development Among Kham Tibetan Herding Groups, J. Marc Foggin, Jared Phillips

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

In efforts to improve people’s standard of living and to prevent serious ecological degradation, government has recently enacted at least 14 different policies that have had, and are likely to have, immense consequences for the Kham Tibetan people’s way of life. Unfortunately, there are often unforeseen, unintended consequences to such widespread and rapid restructuring of society. This paper examines these policies in a holistic fashion, each policy examined independently and in concert with each other; that is, in both a linear and a vertical manner, in order to show how researchers and policy-makers may gain a better grasp about how …

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

This study analyzed nationally representative sample of women (N =10793) to quantify the magnitude and predictors of poverty among indigenous peoples of Nepal. The study estimated the risk of poverty among the major ethnic groups in Nepal. Cross-sectional data from the Nepal Demographic and Health Survey 2006 (NDHS 2006) was used. Step-wise multivariate logistic regressions were conducted. The results show that significant variations exist in the risk of poverty between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples. Tamang were at the highest risk of poverty among the indigenous peoples. Controlling for geography further exacerbated the disparity between indigenous and non-non indigenous peoples. Attentions …

The Construction Of Blackness In Honduran Cultural Production, A. Erin Mason-Montero Sep 2010

The Construction Of Blackness In Honduran Cultural Production, A. Erin Mason-Montero

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This dissertation investigates how marginalized communities of Afro-Hondurans are represented in literature and cinematic productions of non-black writers and film producers. Despite the efforts of the dominant Honduran community to suppress or alter the image of Afro-descendants, a small handful of Ladinos, or individuals of a mixed indigenous and Spanish background, have chosen to explore the Afro-Honduran image in their works. Chapter I, 'Through the Eyes of Another: Racial Identity in Honduras,' discusses the Honduran search for national identity during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. After experiencing periods of political and economic instability, the Honduran government began to promote ancient …

Adoption Of Renewable Portfolio Standards In The United States: Which Factors Matter?, Angely Andrea Cárcamo Gallardo Sep 2010

Adoption Of Renewable Portfolio Standards In The United States: Which Factors Matter?, Angely Andrea Cárcamo Gallardo

Economics ETDs

The RPS has become the most important instrument in United States to encourage the generation of electricity through the use of renewable energy. In brief, the RPS is a policy mechanism that requires suppliers of electricity to provide a specific percentage of their energy supply from some form of renewable energy. Such a percentage is referred to as the RPS ultimate target. In this thesis factors affecting the adoption of an RPS by U.S. states are investigated. Through statistical regression, this thesis specifically studies the effects of political views, energy endowments, electricity markets, economic factors, and other variables. These factors …

Assembling Caliban: French And Other European Depictions Of American Bodies In The Sixteenth Century, Matthew Berch Sep 2010

Assembling Caliban: French And Other European Depictions Of American Bodies In The Sixteenth Century, Matthew Berch

History ETDs

The present study elucidates several of the key tropes and figures employed by a select group of French and European commentators and artists in their attempt to contextualize New World discovery. Utilizing travel narratives, voyager reports, and literary materials, this study traces a specific thematic genealogy from the late thirteenth century to the end of the Renaissance. Over a period of three hundred plus years, various European texts from Mandevilles Travels to The Tempest depicted European encounters with foreign bodies. While descriptions varied, certain recurring themes and tropes gradually developed as European explorers expanded the scope of their ethno-geographic inquiry. …

Nowhere Man: Autoethnographic Reflections On Identity, Family, And Leadership., Tracy John Skipp Sep 2010

Nowhere Man: Autoethnographic Reflections On Identity, Family, And Leadership., Tracy John Skipp

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The purpose of this self study was to discover the values and attitudes I model as a leader to support people in doing their best work. Specifically, do I practice leadership intimacy as defined in this study? Leadership intimacy is defined by addressing these research questions: What values do I lead by? And, what attitudes and practices do I model as a leader? Autoethnography is a qualitative genre of research I used in this study. It describes the researcher and his or her personal experiences within a social context, in this case a research university. Autoethnography is often described as …

The History Of The Federal Government's Involvement In Water Resources : An Attempt To Correct Externalities?, Alyssa M. Neir Sep 2010

The History Of The Federal Government's Involvement In Water Resources : An Attempt To Correct Externalities?, Alyssa M. Neir

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Federal government can undermine or support state water laws and programs by asserting its legislative power to manage domestic water resources. Predicting the future thrust of the Federal government's legislative involvement in water resources can help states build flexibility into their plans and anticipate where they may be able to get Federal funds to accomplish their water management plans. This paper applies the economic concept of technological externalities to predict that future Federal involvement. The hypothesis of this paper has two parts: 1) that in addition to becoming involved in water resources management to provide public goods and promote …

Minimum Wage States During Recession, Leila Burrows Sep 2010

Minimum Wage States During Recession, Leila Burrows

Economics ETDs

This study analyzes the effect of minimum wage legislation during a period of economic recession. In particular, I examine whether states with minimum wages higher than the federal minimum wage fared better or worse during the recession that began December 2007. Since minimum wages raise the price of labor above market price, firms subject to this additional cost might experience greater adverse effects of the recession. On the other hand, since state minimum wages are often enacted in states with relatively high market wages, the disemployment effects of minimum wage legislation might be negligible. Despite a large increase in minimum …

Kit Carson's Last Fight: The Adobe Walls Campaign Of 1864, David Pafford Sep 2010

Kit Carson's Last Fight: The Adobe Walls Campaign Of 1864, David Pafford

History ETDs

In the fall of 1864, Brigadier General James H. Carleton sent Kit Carson and about four hundred men on a punitive campaign against the Kiowa and Comanche Indians of the high plains. The resulting battle was one of the largest in the history of North American Indian Wars. Yet this conflict has been relegated to historical obscurity. In this paper, I examine why Kit Carson's 1864 Adobe Walls Campaign is forgotten, I measure the success of the mission, and place it in the larger context of nineteenth century Indian Wars, particularly those prosecuted against plains tribes.

Cleaning Up After Sex: An Environmental History Of Contraceptives In The United States, 1873—2010, Sarah Ruth Payne Sep 2010

Cleaning Up After Sex: An Environmental History Of Contraceptives In The United States, 1873—2010, Sarah Ruth Payne

History ETDs

I argue in my dissertation, 'Cleaning Up After Sex: An Environmental History of Contraceptives in the United States, 1873—2010,' that through the processes of contraceptive production, consumption, and disposal, over time, the role of contraceptives in human/nature interactions has become more significant and the impact more direct. I examine the production, consumption, and disposal histories of condoms, diaphragms and cervical caps, intrauterine devices, and hormonal birth control. Production, consumption, and disposal of the birth control methods I study have determined physical experiences with both our bodies and with the non-human natural world, but those three processes have also shaped discourse …

The Market For Affordable Housing In Taos, New Mexico, Jeffrey Mitchell, Michael O'Donnell

BBER Publications

This report presents the findings of a study done by the UNM Bureau of Business and Economic Research on contract for the Town of Taos, New Mexico, and UNMs Taos branch campus to analyze the Taos housing market. The initial objective was to assess the potential demand for student housing at the UNM-Taos Klauer campus; a broader objective was to understand the dynamics of housing supply and demand in the Taos economy. The study's findings confirm the perception that the Taos residential housing market is distorted; fewer than five percent of working households could afford a median-priced home in Taos …

Domestic Architectural Production In Northwest Mexico, Elizabeth Arwen Bagwell Jul 2010

Domestic Architectural Production In Northwest Mexico, Elizabeth Arwen Bagwell

Anthropology ETDs

This study examines the organization of architectural production at Cueva Bringas and Cueva el Aguaje, two prehispanic coursed-adobe cliff dwellings in the Northern Sierra (Casas Grandes) region of northeastern Sonora, Mexico. Since there are no archaeological models of the organization of domestic architectural production, an ethnographic study was completed to establish a set of expectations for this data set. The results of this study found that architecture is primarily built by groups whose members are not part of the household intending to occupy the structure. In addition, architectural production varies by gender of the producer, level of complexity, production step, …

Marginality, Mayhem And Middle Class Anxieties: Imaginaries Of Masculinity And Urban Violence In Contemporary Mexican And Brazilian Film, Jeremy Lehnen Jul 2010

Marginality, Mayhem And Middle Class Anxieties: Imaginaries Of Masculinity And Urban Violence In Contemporary Mexican And Brazilian Film, Jeremy Lehnen

Latin American Studies ETDs

Marginality, Mayhem and Middle Class Anxieties: Imaginaries of Masculinity and Urban Violence in Contemporary Mexican and Brazilian Film is a comparative study that explores the confluence of cinematic discourse, violence, masculinity and constructions (or denial) of citizenship in present-day Latin America. My argument is that the thematization of violence and masculinity in contemporary Latin American film intercedes at a symbolic level into social relations that are increasingly mediated through images that depict what is socially permitted. This dissertation considers how film (re)structures perceptions of masculinity and its inter-linkages with cityscapes marked by social and material violence. Violence is at the …

This project takes a look at the content and the context that is presented to children in two fourth grade public school art classrooms (Gallup-McKinley County Schools district) that primarily serve Dine children. The purpose of this study is to examine the existence and relevancy of the materials delivered in those classrooms, examining how they serve the best interest of those children with respect to their cultural learning philosophies, academic success, and self-awareness as members of the Dine Nation. The project also takes a look at how the children respond to the lessons delivered in those classrooms, particularly how the …

High-Throughput Genomic/Proteomic Studies: Finding Structure And Meaning By Similarity, George Sidney Davidson Jul 2010

High-Throughput Genomic/Proteomic Studies: Finding Structure And Meaning By Similarity, George Sidney Davidson

Biology ETDs

The post-genomic challenge was to develop high-throughput technologies for measuring genome scale mRNA expression levels. Analyses of these data rely on computers in an unprecedented way to make the results accessible to researchers. My research in this area enabled the first compendium of microarray experiments for a multi-cellular eukaryote, Caenorhabditis elegans. Prior to this research approximately 6% of the C. elegans genome had been studied, and little was known about global expression patterns in this organism. Here I cluster data from 553 different microarray experiments and show that the results are stable, statistically significant and highly enriched for specific biological …

Comparison Of Microbial Communities On Roots, Ceilings And Floors Of Two Lava Tube Caves In New Mexico, Jessica R. Snider Jul 2010

Comparison Of Microbial Communities On Roots, Ceilings And Floors Of Two Lava Tube Caves In New Mexico, Jessica R. Snider

Biology ETDs

Lava tube caves possess a rich and patchy mosaic of nutrients and water that fosters a wide variety of microbial life. Water percolating past vegetation and through surface soils introduces dissolved carbon and nitrogen into caves. Roots provide even higher levels of carbon, nitrogen and microorganisms as they grow into the cave environment from surface vegetation. I hypothesized that this mosaic of nutrients and energy resources has a direct effect on the distribution and composition of microbial communities within caves. To test this hypothesis, I selected two lava tube caves in New Mexico, USA and identified six zones consisting of …

Recognizing Indians: Place, Identity, History, And The Federal Acknowledgment Of The Ohlone/Costanoan-Esselen Nation, Philip Blair Laverty Jul 2010

Recognizing Indians: Place, Identity, History, And The Federal Acknowledgment Of The Ohlone/Costanoan-Esselen Nation, Philip Blair Laverty

Anthropology ETDs

Long considered extinct,' in 1992 the Ohlone/Costanoan-Esselen Nation (OCEN) began its bid to achieve federal acknowledgment as an American Indian tribe. This dissertation is a study of the history of the Native peoples of the Monterey Bay region and the current recognition efforts of OCEN. Using ethnographic and ethnohistorical methodologies and the fieldnotes of John Peabody Harrington as a key archive, it focuses on social and cultural aspects of identity change and community persistence, particularly in relation to land and place. It explores contemporary understandings of precontact political organization as they presently affect the Esselen Nation in the context of …

Nuances In A Panethnic Southwest Landscape, Angelica Solares Jul 2010

Nuances In A Panethnic Southwest Landscape, Angelica Solares

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Urban landscapes of places with large immigrant populations are transformed as immigrants bring a different use of space with them. Mexican immigrants throughout the southwestern United States have physically transformed the landscape, and these trans-formed places often result in spaces that foster socialization and assert cultural identity. This thesis proposes that a three-stage cycle of spatial production exists in Mexicano communities in the United States, and describes the authors three-stage cycle of spatial production model in detail. The cycle begins with the formation of an enclave, followed by the transformation of the urban landscape which then results in one of …

Labor Pains: An Exploration Of The Complex Roles Of Identity, The Body, And Policy In Surrogacy Discourses In India, Jennifer Aimee Sandoval Jul 2010

Labor Pains: An Exploration Of The Complex Roles Of Identity, The Body, And Policy In Surrogacy Discourses In India, Jennifer Aimee Sandoval

Communication ETDs

This study applied communication theory about the body, identity, and policy to analysis of the process of surrogacy in India. Using qualitative interview methods and discourse analysis, the study aims to increase understanding of how the process of transnational surrogacy emerges, and the impact it has on participants. Interviews were conducted in Ahmedabad, Anand, and Mumbai with doctors, health officials, surrogates, and activities. The interview data was used to answer four research questions that worked to identify how the process of surrogacy is communicated and enacted, how surrogates bodies are positioned, how surrogates construct their identities, and how policy constructs …
