A Dimensionless Invariant For Relative Size At Sex Change In Animals: Explanation And Implications, Andy Gardner, David Allsop, Eric Charnov, Stuart West

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Recent comparative studies across sex-changing animals have found that the relative size and age at sex change are strikingly invariant. In particular, 91%-97% of the variation in size at sex change across species can be explained by the simple rule that individuals change sex when they reach 72% of their maximum body size. However, this degree of invariance is surprising and has proved controversial. In particular, it is not clear why this result should hold, given that there is considerable biological variation across species in factors that can influence the evolutionarily stable timing of sex change. Our overall aim here …

El Niño & Lter Sites, David Greenland, Climate Committee

Long Term Ecological Research Network

An intense El Niño event can have severe impacts on the ecosystems of the west coast of South America. The upwelling of nutrient rich water off the coast is suppressed. Anchovy stocks dramatically decline, as do the seabird populations who live from them. The decline of the seabird populations negatively impacts the fertilizer industry which depends upon the guano produced by the birds. The fishing industry suffers from the lack of fish. Further impacts on terrestrial ecosystems of the region are noted below. It has long been recognized that during El Niño event effects are felt in other parts of …

Long Term Ecological Research Network

This article describes the LTER program, reviews the development of the LTER network, identifies its contributions to ecological science, and considers ways in which LTER efforts can interface with other ecological research programs. The potential for an expanded network of scientists, sites, and programs is emphasized because of the importance of comparative analyses in advancing ecological science.

The Climates Of The Lter Sites, Climatology Committee

Long Term Ecological Research Network

The LTER sites (Table 1.1) are funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 5 year renewable funding periods and overseen by a Central Coordinating Committee consisting of all site principal investigators and normal NSF peer review procedures. One driving force behind studies at these sites was the desire to describe human-derived and natural perturbations acting over long time periods, e.g. air pollution, acidification, CO2• Studies at the sites are organized around five core themes which are 1) pattern and control of primary production; 2) spatial and temporal distribution of populations selected to represent trophic structure; 3) pattern and control …

"In terms of volume and potential impact, the most serious conservation problem in the world today is the destruction of lowland tropical forests and the extinction of their fauna. Since 1950, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization, half of the world's forests have vanished (Cultural Survival, Inc., 1982). The conversion rate of these forests is currently so great that a recent National Research Council (1980a) panel has predicted that their existence as a natural ecosystem will cease by the year 2000, except perhaps in two areas - Western Amazonia and Central Africa. One important step toward the preservation of …
