Complete Great Toe Sesamoid Excision: A Case Series, James A. Dollahite, Benjamin D. Packard, Richard A. Miller
UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Background: Hallux sesamoids notably contribute to the biomechanics of the great toe. Although frequently ignored or forgotten, injury to the hallux sesamoids can be debilitating. Conservative management remains the initial approach for symptomatic sesamoid disorders, but surgical excision is an option. We performed a retrospective case series to examine the preoperative characteristics and postsurgical outcomes of patients who underwent great toe sesamoidectomy.
Methods: We reviewed medical records of patients who underwent great toe sesamoidectomy performed by a single surgeon (RAM) during a 10-year period (26 patients, 28 procedures). Data collected included smoking status, prior first ray surgical treatment, highlevel athlete …

Comparison Of Intraoperative Fluoroscopy To Postoperative Weight-Bearing Radiographs Obtained 4 To 6 Weeks After Bunion Repair With A Chevron Osteotomy, Amber L. Price, Travis M. Hughes, Christopher Kurnik, Christina G. Kurnik, Katherine J. Gavin, Richard A. Miller
UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Background: During operative treatment of bunions, an attempt is made to correct the hallux valgus angle (HVA) and the intermetatarsal angle (IMA). In this study, the HVA and the IMA were measured using intraoperative C-arm fluoroscopic images obtained during surgical treatment of a bunion with chevron osteotomy. These angles were again measured using weight-bearing radiographs obtained 4 to 6 weeks postoperatively.
Methods: At our institution, we reviewed medical records of patients who underwent a bunion repair with chevron osteotomy between January 2013 and October 2017. A total of 26 feet from 24 patients were included. Three authors (ALP, TMH, and …

Decoupling The Effects Of The Amyloid Precursor Protein From Amyloid-Β Plaques On Axonal Transport Dynamics In The Living Brain, Christopher S. Medina, Taylor W. Uselman, Daniel R. Barto, Frances Cháves, Russell E. Jacobs, Elaine L. Bearer
Pathology Research and Scholarship
Amyloid precursor protein (APP) is the precursor to Aβ plaques. The cytoplasmic domain of APP mediates attachment of vesicles to molecular motors for axonal transport. In APP-KO mice, transport of Mn2+ is decreased. In old transgenic mice expressing mutated human (APPSwInd) linked to Familial Alzheimer's Disease, with both expression of APPSwInd and plaques, the rate and destination of Mn2+ axonal transport is altered, as detected by time-lapse manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) of the brain in living mice. To determine the relative contribution of expression of APPSwInd versus plaque on transport dynamics, we developed a Tet-off system to decouple expression …
Race-Conscious Admissions, Diversity, And Academic Freedom, Vinay Harpalani
Race-Conscious Admissions, Diversity, And Academic Freedom, Vinay Harpalani
Faculty Scholarship
This Essay examines the First Amendment component to race-conscious admissions policies. It argues that these policies reflect a core First Amendment value: academic freedom. It illustrates that race-conscious admissions policies promote academic freedom in two ways. One aspect of a university’s academic freedom is the selection of its own student body. Justice Felix Frankfurter stated this explicitly in his concurrence in Sweezy v. New Hampshire (1957), which was later cited in Justice Lewis Powell's influential concurrence in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1978). Additionally, the compelling interest in diversity has roots in the First Amendment. By …

Book Review: Jonathan P. Thompson, River Of Lost Souls: The Science, Politics, And Green Behind The Gold King Mine Disaster (2018), Clifford J. Villa
Faculty Scholarship
On August 5, 2015, contractors for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) investigating the Gold King Mine in southwestern Colorado accidently released some three million gallons of contaminated water into the Animas River, triggering weeks of front-page headlines, months of congressional hearings, and now years of litigation. River of Lost Souls: The Science, Politics, and Greed Behind the Gold King Mine Disaster, a new book by Jonathan P. Thompson, suggests by its title a human folly behind this “disaster” much broader and deeper than one tragic accident wrought by EPA contractors. On this thesis, Thompson certainly delivers. However, what …
Evaluating Judicial Standards Of Conduct In The Current Political And Social Climate: The Need To Strengthen Impropriety Standards And Removal Remedies To Include Procedural Justice And Community Harm, Joshua E. Kastenberg
Faculty Scholarship
Chief Justice Warren Burger warned that when “people who have long been exploited . . . come to believe that courts cannot vindicate their legal rights from fraud,” an “incalculable damage [is done] to society.”
Part I of this Article presents an examination of the current common frameworks shared by the states for addressing judicial conduct appealing to popular social and political influences. Included in this section is an analysis of the interrelationship between implicit bias and impropriety, as well as on community harm and procedural justice.
Part II provides both a historical and contemporary analysis of “populism,” including the …

Fracture Of The Ulnar Sesamoid Bone In The Thumb Of A Collegiate Basketball Player: A Case Report, Andrew M. Hyden, Christopher A. Mcgrew, Deana Mercer
Fracture Of The Ulnar Sesamoid Bone In The Thumb Of A Collegiate Basketball Player: A Case Report, Andrew M. Hyden, Christopher A. Mcgrew, Deana Mercer
UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Sesamoid fractures of the hand are uncommon occurrences that can lead to prolonged pain and swelling if delayed in diagnosis. This is particularly problematic in competitive athletes. We describe an ulnar sesamoid fracture of the thumb due to a blunt traumatic injury in a Division I collegiate basketball player. The 22-year-old woman injured her left thumb when kicked during a game. The patient was treated nonoperatively with promising outcomes. Sesamoid fractures of the hand can be difficult to diagnose, and any delay can lengthen the amount of time before the athlete returns to play. Radiographic findings may help healthcare providers …

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Background: The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) 11+ is an injury prevention program that decreases the incidence of lower extremity injuries. The purpose of the current study was to understand what specific exercises prevented injury from occurring. We thus developed and tested a form to identify these exercises. We hypothesize that trained examiners could accurately and reliably use this form to identify and record individual exercises performed during preparticipation warm-up.
Methods: A repeated-measures study design was used in this investigation. After observing five prepractice warm-up videos obtained from multiple high schools, 11 examiners observed and recorded performed exercises at …

In 2018, Administrator Gina McCarthy, who ran the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) under President Barack Obama from 2013-2017, honored the University of New Mexico School of Law by speaking to a gathering of lawyers, students and community members about the role of lawyers in protecting the environment. Our symposium focused on “Hot Topics in Environmental Law,” which was also the central issue in Administrator McCarthy’s message. The editors of the Natural Resources Journal are pleased to share Administrator McCarthy’s poignant speech with our readership.

Optimizing Interconnectivity Among Networks Under Attacks, Pankaz Das
Optimizing Interconnectivity Among Networks Under Attacks, Pankaz Das
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Networks may need to be interconnected for various reasons such as inter-organizational communication, redundant connectivity, increasing data-rate and minimizing delay or packet-loss, etc. However, the trustworthiness of an added interconnection link cannot be taken for granted due to the presence of attackers who may compromise the security of an interconnected network by intercepting the interconnections. Namely, an intercepted interconnection link may not be secured due to the data manipulations by attackers. In the first part of this dissertation, the number of interconnections between the two networks is optimized for maximizing the data-rate and minimizing the packet-loss under the threat of …

Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This report describes the prototype and demonstration of a reliable local area network (LAN) of devices able to interconnect a crew of fire fighters with a communications node. The data consists of images for thermal cameras at a given rate and other low bandwith data taken from the different sensors of the fire fighter gear, that are connected to the transmitter using a Bluetooth personal area network (PAN). The physical environment is indoors and it is expected that all nodes of the communication networks are distributed in different positions into a building.
